Design: Shinelal Published by Kerala State Biodiversity Board, Thiruvananthapuram 2 FOREWORD Kerala is the only state in India where Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) has been constituted in all Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporation way back in 2012. The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.

    Granite (Building Stone) Quarry of K. K. Surendran in Vayathur Village, Iritty Taluk, Kannur District – Extent 0.9268 Ha PRE-FEASIBILTY REPORT 1.0 INTRODUCTION OF THE MINING ACTIVITY K.K Surendran is proposing a (Building Stone) Quarry with permit at Survey No. 28/1A2 of Vayathur Village, Iritty Taluk, Kannur District, Kerala for an area of 0.9268 hectares. The proposed quarry area is hill rock. In most parts of the quarry permit area, the rocks are exposed and also the granite (building stone) exposures are present / bordering to the lease boundary proving the occurrence of the granite (building stone). The proposed quarry area is located at Vayathur, 23 km from Sreekandapuram and 45 km from Kannur. The highest elevation of the permit area is 435m MSL and lowest is 395m MSL. As the proposed area is hillock, the drainage of the permit area is towards southwest direction. No habitants are located in the permit area. The geological resources of granite ( building stone) in mining permit area are estimated to be 490343MT. The Blocked Reserves a nd Mineable Reserve of granite (building stone) in mining permit area are estimated to be 204506MT and 285837MT respectively. In the first five years of plan period, total 2,25,000 Tons of granite (building stone) shall be quarried/mined. The balance mineral reserves and part of blocked resources shall be quarried after modifying the bench design in next five year period. General Surface area is having well exposed granite rock, and it is having good market demand, therefore the permit holder proposes to produce building stone from this area.
