  • Anthony Braxton's Synaesthetic Ideal and Notations for Improvisers
Critical Studies in Improvisation / Études critiques en improvisation, Vol 4, No 1 (2008) “What I Call a Sound”: Anthony Braxton’s Synaesthetic Ideal and Notations for Improvisers Graham Lock “See deeply enough, and you see musically.” Thomas Carlyle (qtd. in Palmer 27) “Tuned to its grandest level, music, like light, reminds us that everything that matters, even in this world, is reducible to spirit.” Al Young (132) Flick through the pages of Anthony Braxton’s Composition Notes and you’ll soon encounter some striking visual imagery. In Composition #32, for example, “Giant dark chords are stacked together in an abyss of darkness” (CN-B 375); Composition #75 will take you “’from one room to the next’—as if in a hall of mirrors (‘with lights in the mirrors’)” (CN-D 118); in Composition #77D slap tongue dynamics “can be viewed [as] sound ‘sparks’ that dance ‘in the wind’ of the music” (189); enter the “universe” of Composition #101 and you’ll discover “a field of tall long trees (of glass)” (CN-E 142).1 While it is not unusual for composers to employ visual images when discussing their work, Braxton’s descriptions are clearly not illustrative in the sense of, say, Vivaldi’s poems for La Quattro Stagioni or Ellington’s droll explanations of his song titles. Rather than describe scenes that the music supposedly evokes, Braxton appears instead to offer extremely personal visualisations of the musical events and processes that are taking place in his compositions. Further evidence of this highly individual perspective can be found throughout his work.

The Trio in G Minor for Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano by William Yeates Hurlstone a Critical Reassessment - 13th May 2004 1st revision 9th July 2004 2nd revision 29th September 2004 3rd revision 21st October 2004 4th revision 21st January 2005 5th revision 25th February 2005 6th revision 23rd November 2006 - Richard J Moore [email protected] 364 Catherington Lane Waterlooville HANTS PO8 0TU UK Richard J Moore Copyright © 2004 Introduction The Trio in G Minor by William Hurlstone is one of only a handful of works written for clarinet, bassoon and piano; as such, it will be of interest to clarinettists and bassoonists alike. This attractive piece, written in the late 19th century, provides a valuable addition to the repertoire. It has both audience and player appeal; however, from a performer's perspective it is a frustrating work to prepare. The parts and score of the only publicly available source abound with inconsistencies. Even with the latest Emerson edition, while matters of inconsistency have been addressed, it is still difficult to decipher exactly the intent of the composer; the gratuitous overuse of expression marks is particularly troublesome. In comparison, Hurlstone's Four Characteristic Pieces for Clarinet and Piano and his Sonata for Bassoon and Piano are both finely crafted works. It is therefore a mystery as to why the Trio should be so uncharacteristic of Hurlstone's usual attention to detail. The first printed (Emerson) edition1 of the Trio was based on the only publicly accessible source: a professional copy of the autograph made during the 1930s. This source suffers not only from having had alterations made by Parr2, but in its original form it was hardly a faithful reproduction of the autograph.

Johnstone Music Catalogue of Music Composed and prepared by David Johnstone Printed Published & Distributed by Creighton’s Collection DAVID JOHNSTONE Composition Violoncello Creative Music David Johnstone is considered one of the most creative and interesting string players in the Iberian peninsula today, combining a career as a cellist with that of a busy composer. Although British by birth he has, for over a decade, been principal cellist of the 'Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra' of Spain, and a composer who specializes in string and/or lighter classical writing. In particular, he composes for all the bowed string instruments as soloists, and for chamber groups of various sizes (some including wind and brass instruments). He also specializes in writing String Orchestra pieces that are well within the capabilities of youth and conservatoire orchestras, whilst other compositions are better suited to fully professional ensembles (such as the 'Camerata Cambrensis', conducted by Caroline Collier, who have premiered several works). Indeed, many of his compositions are now published by Creighton's Collection, UK (www.cccd.co.uk / see the section 'Sheet Music'). His compositions have been heard in more than thirty countries across five continents and on European radio stations and television channels particularly Spanish National Television 'Tele Cinco', who have featured many of his chamber works. As a performer he has European-wide orchestral and ensemble experience, including playing for renowned orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Concert Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the English String Orchestra. He has also performed in London West-End shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Barnum etc., and regularly recorded for BBC Radio programmes.
