Festival Guide 10.22.20 - 11.08.20 Welcome Welcome to the 43Rd Denver Film Festival! Festival Guide 10.22.20 - 11.08.20 Welcome Welcome to the 43rd Denver Film Festival! As Denver Film’s new CEO, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the organization over the past two months. Thus far, I’m overwhelmed with the passion and dedication of the staff, board members and Denver Film community at large to our core vision of transforming lives through film. This year has been challenging for us all. However, we remain committed to connecting audiences and building community through thought-provoking storytelling. It is with that in mind that we present this year’s festival on our Virtual Cinema platform. Though we will not be able to convene in person as in years past, DFF43 aims to be the most accessible and inclusive event we’ve ever produced. Being available to all Coloradoans from the comfort and safety of their homes, we present a world of cinema, over 180 films, spanning the globe. We hope you find something that speaks to you, inspires you, challenges you, and yes, entertains you. The simplistic beauty of the cinema: light illuminating the dark to create magic, will be something to which we will soon return. When we do, I can’t wait to welcome you to the Sie FilmCenter. But for now, kick-back, and enjoy the show. We are forever grateful for your continued support. • The Odyssey of Fellini Kayla Knuth
ISSUE #1 | JULY 2020 The Odyssey of Fellini Kayla Knuth Making raw cinematic artistry work on the big screen can be extremely challenging, and directors such as Federico Fellini meet that challenge by giving us unique films, each with a clear vision. There are many masterful auteurs within the film industry, but there is something about Fellini’s good-natured style that truly engages me, along with how he incorporates elements of both reality and fantasy in iconic films such as La Strada (1953), La Dolce Vita (1961), and 8 ½ (1963). Not everyone is capable of digging deeper into what the artist is actually saying, and many are too quick to make harsh judgements about what they see rather than what they interpret. This is another reason why his film work interests me. I enjoy the “chase” that helps me provide a deeper analysis of what certain scenes in his films actually symbolize. This makes me pay closer attention to the films, and I find myself rewinding scenes, taking a step back to investigate the meaning of what I’m seeing. Almost all of Fellini’s films feature a dominant protagonist character with qualities to which the audience can at least secretly relate. Some of Fellini’s most striking cinematic moments are memorable because of characters that tend to stick with you even when the films become unclear at times. In addition, the artistry, passion, zest for life, and inven- tiveness on display in his filmmaking help us appreciate a wide range of possibilities for cinematic representation. Aesthetically, Fellini’s films reach for what I will call “ugliness within beauty.” His films seem to ask: is there beauty to be found within ugliness? Or is there ugliness lurking within the beautiful? Fellini attempts to ask these questions through both his striking visuals and sympathetic characters.

  • William Shakespeare - Poems
Classic Poetry Series William Shakespeare - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive William Shakespeare(26 April 1564 - 23 April 1616) an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613 at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the 16th century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language.

  • Weekend Box Office Results… 3/19
Monday, March 22, 2021 | No. 160 On March 23rd, 1998 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held its 70th annual Oscar Ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Broadcast on ABC TV and hosted by Billy Crystal, that year’s Academy Awards Ceremony hit the high water mark as the most-watched in history, having an average of more than 57M viewers in the U.S. Titanic won the night by taking home 11 of the 24 Oscars awarded, including Best Picture, Director, Film Editing, Cinematography and Sound. James Cameron directed the epic romance, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet at the dawn of their careers. At that time, many Oscar viewers watched with anticipation and had a rooting interest in the outcome because Titanic was a film they loved. Since then, much has changed on the Oscars front with Academy members embracing films for Best Picture that are driven more by critical acclaim than by box office success. Audiences for awards shows in general declined sharply as viewers became increasingly less familiar with the nominees – frequently because specialty films hadn't played in Billy Crystal hosted the 70th Oscars, theatres in smaller markets across the country. More recently, the rise of streaming making his 6th turn at the helm Studios like Netflix and Amazon has led to many Oscar nominees with little or no Click to Watch theatrical exposure. Despite the streamers' large audiences, many television viewers aren't subscribers and, therefore, don't have a rooting interest in whether those films win. The global pandemic added to the problem by closing most cinemas last year, prompting studios to defer movie openings to 2021.
