  • Language Contact in Pomerania: the Case of German, Polish, and Kashubian
P a g e | 1 Language Contact in Pomerania: The Case of German, Polish, and Kashubian Nick Znajkowski, New York University Purpose The effects of language contact and language shift are well documented. Lexical items and phonological features are very easily transferred from one language to another and once transferred, rather easily documented. Syntactic features can be less so in both respects, but shifts obviously do occur. The various qualities of these shifts, such as whether they are calques, extensions of a structure present in the modifying language, or the collapsing of some structure in favor the apparent simplicity found in analogous foreign structures, all are indicative of the intensity and the duration of the contact. Additionally, and perhaps this is the most interesting aspect of language shift, they show what is possible in the evolution of language over time, but also what individual speakers in a single generation are capable of concocting. This paper seeks to explore an extremely fascinating and long-standing language contact situation that persists to this day in Northern Poland—that of the Kashubian language with its dominating neighbors: Polish and German. The Kashubians are a Slavic minority group who have historically occupied the area in Northern Poland known today as Pomerania, bordering the Baltic Sea. Their language, Kashubian, is a member of the Slavic branch of Indo-European languages and further belongs to the Pomeranian branch of Lechitic languages, which includes Polish, Silesian, and the extinct Polabian and Slovincian. The situation to be found among the Kashubian people, a people at one point variably bi-, or as is sometimes the case among older folk, even trilingual in Kashubian, P a g e | 2 Polish, and German is a particularly exciting one because of the current vitality of the Kashubian minority culture.

ONLINE EXCHANGE BRESCIA & BRUSY Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Baracca Kaszubskie Liceum Ogólnokształcące w Brusach 2021 Elisa Lacagnina Thanks to the Etwinning platform I had the possibility to know Ms. Alicja Frymark, English teacher from Kashubian Secondary School (Kaszubskie Liceum Ogólnokształcące) in Brusy, Poland. Since our first online meeting on Skype, we have kept talking, most of all, of our school project called “Online exchange - Brescia & Brusy”. To start, we decided to assign our students a partner to make them work in pairs. Their task was to exchange emails with their friend about the topic given and then, with the information, to write a short article in English. We assigned different topics like Covid 19 and lockdown; traditional food; language uses; interesting facts about the city, the country and the region; school; local tradition. The first part of the project went really well and I was satisfied with the work done. My 5th-year students are enthusiastic about having a “virtual” foreign partner. I decided to start an online exchange because my students felt the need to improve their English speaking and writing skills, as we have only 3 hour English a week. According to me, these opportunities are not only useful to improve the language skills but also to expand your knowledge, to meet new people, to know about the uses and the customs of different countries. Moreover, it was the right moment to start a project of this kind precisely in this difficult period. We have been experiencing a different life, due to Covid 19 home–schooling, restrictions, curfews, prohibitions etc.

Bulletin of the Maritime Institute Gdansk, 1993, 20, 1 Rajmund Dubrawski, Asst. Prof. Dr. Pharm. Department of Maritime Hydrotechnics The Maritime Institute in Gdansk EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROCESSES IN BORROW PITS ON THE STATE OF INNER PUCK BAY Abstract The inner Puck Bay is of special interest because at the brake of the seventies a very deep environmental and biocenotic transformation occured in this basin in result of cumulated influence of antropogenic factors. At present, in order to protect the seacoast of the Hel Peninsu la, sand is dredged from the Puck Bay. In effect, in the bottom of the I bay's coastal zone five borrow pits have been formed. It was expected that in these pits may develop processes which could negatively in fluence the existing ecosystem of the bay, and become an additional cause of Puck Bay devastation. Results of investigations carried out in the years 1991-1992 proved that such processes do occur and that they might negatively influence the Puck Bay environment. 1. INTRODUCTION Since 1989 the seaward coast of the Hel Peninsula is protected by artificial nourishment with sandy material dredged from the coastal 80 R. Dubrawski zone of the inner Puck Bay. As a side-effect of the works, in the Puck Bay appeared a row of pits, separated by natural hollows. The borrow pits have decidedly different sedimentation, metabolic, hydrochemical and biologic properties from areas of neighbouring bottom and natural hollows (Chalupy Hollow and Kuznica Hollow). The area of the inner Puck Bay is the most strongly accumulative part of the Gulf of Gdansk, and the area in which the pits have been formed - Wladyslawowo and Chalupy- is the most strongly accumulative part of the inner Puck Bay.

Downloaded by [University of Wisconsin - Madison] at 05:00 18 January 2017 THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE PRUSSIAN CRUSADE The Archaeology of the Prussian Crusade explores the archaeology and material culture of the Crusade against the Prussian tribes in the thirteenth century, and the subsequent society created by the Teutonic Order that lasted into the six- teenth century. It provides the first synthesis of the material culture of a unique crusading society created in the south-eastern Baltic region over the course of the thirteenth century. It encompasses the full range of archaeological data, from standing buildings through to artefacts and ecofacts, integrated with writ- ten and artistic sources. The work is sub-divided into broadly chronological themes, beginning with a historical outline, exploring the settlements, castles, towns and landscapes of the Teutonic Order’s theocratic state and concluding with the role of the reconstructed and ruined monuments of medieval Prussia in the modern world in the context of modern Polish culture. This is the first work on the archaeology of medieval Prussia in any lan- guage, and is intended as a comprehensive introduction to a period and area of growing interest. This book represents an important contribution to promot- ing international awareness of the cultural heritage of the Baltic region, which has been rapidly increasing over the last few decades. • Mazovia, East Poland, and the Swietokrzyskie Mountains
Mazurian Lakes - North East Introduction We would like to tempt you to spend an attractive holiday in Northeast Poland. This is intended especially for those who enjoy an active holiday: for those who like water sports, or close contact with nature, and for those who are looking for peace and quiet, for everything that can bring perfect regeneration of psychic and physical powers. Northeast Poland is an area with many lakes and rivers, offering splendid conditions for sailing, wind surfing, canoeing, and water skiing. Amateur fishermen will find many smaller lakes and rivers teeming with various kinds of fish: eels, bream, perch, European catfish, crucian carp, burbot, bleak and much sought-after members of the salmon family, the lavaret and European whitefish. Many Polish tour operators organise hunting expeditions in the extensive forests and woods, and also offer photo-safaris for nature lovers, and for bird-watchers a chance to observe many species of birds in their natural habitat. Many rare animals and birds can be found here (elk, roe deer, European bison, foxes, beavers, wolves, lynx, cormorants, swans, grey herons, cranes, ruffs, double snipe, and wood grouse). The most important areas of natural environment are protected in numerous nature reserves and three scenic parks. In Northeast Poland, they offer you holidays in fully furnished holiday chalets in the Szczytno region; summer and winter holidays at Mragowo; canoeing down the Krutynia river; boat trips through the Mazurian lakes and the Elblag Canal; pleasure cruises on Vistula Bay with visits to the most interesting ports; excursions to the most attractive towns of the region; picnics, camp-fire excursions and britzka rides; visits to nature reserves and stud farms; arrangements to hire motor boats, sailing boats, canoes and ice-boats.

2(30) 2019 Słowa-kluczowe: literatura kaszubska, język kaszubski, poezja kaszubska, proza kaszubska, drama- turgia kaszubska * Dr hab., prof. The first two cover West Prussia, with #44 devoted to the Regierungsbezirk Danzig and #45 the RB Marienwerder. The last three are for East Prussia, and deal with RB Allenstein, RB Königsberg and RB Gumbinnen, respectively. A note from Mark F. Rabideau on OW-Preussen-L for 1 June 2015: As for the broader situation regarding Pommern records, I would guess there is a about a 80-90% record loss due to WW2 It is truly bleak. Westpreussen fared somewhat better; the record loss there is more on the order of ~40% across that former region. The bottom line is that the LDS records are most likely your best record source (currently).
