The Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology, Kementerian Riset dan Teknologi, provided valuable oversight during the course of my project. In addition to facilitating my receipt of a research visa, the able staff at the Ministry reviewed my regular progress reports and methodological updates. When the prophesied reforms failed to materialize, and when I repeatedly failed to engage Indonesians of my acquaintance in a meaningful dialog about the place and use of history, I moved in a different direction. My focus on history tended towards systemic analyses. I was interested in the structural logics that enabled and constrained political efficacy. My Indonesian

In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape.

    Embodied encounters: Identities in experiential, informal dance, and movement in Central Java Lise Lavelle, Lund University, Sweden Contact: [email protected] Abstract The performance presented in this paper, entitled “Perempuan,” or “Women” in English, is the result of an intercultural meeting between three dancers, two from Java, Indonesia, and one from Denmark (me). Our performance took place in the cultural city of Solo, Central Java, during the international festival, “Ritual Art and Cultural Environment” in 1995. I first met the two Javanese dancers at the Indonesian National Arts Institute in Solo (ISI), where I was carrying out fieldwork for my PhD, centering on the Amerta Movement from Java. Amerta Movement, created by Javanese movement-instructor and performing artist Suprapto Suryodarmo (Prapto) in the 1980s, is a free, non-stylized motion based on everyday movements and on working with awareness and attitudes to life (not an ethnic dance). Amerta Movement has attracted thousands of people, especially Westerners, from all walks of life and of all ages. The practitioners study identity, self-expression, movement-vocabulary, communication, and improvised performance. The research method is practice-based/artistic research. My aim of working with the Javanese dancers for Perempuan was to apply the Amerta improvisational movement to a dance performance with professional dancers, and to exchange our dance skills. It was also based on my wish to get to know Javanese women a little better. Thus, the Perempuan dance project and dance performance became an encounter between non-form Amerta Movement, represented by me, a Westerner; and form, Javanese dance, represented by the two Javanese dancers.

My contributions in these chapters covers the literature review, the residential survey on Sumba Island (a joint effort with Professor Resosudarmo), data analysis, choosing the appropriate dataset, reconstructing the caste information, the composition of the chapters as well as revision post presentation was undertaken by me. The chapters on indigenous slavery and Austronesian-Hindu caste in the thesis, as well as the preliminary version of the Muslim-Christian inequalities of opportunities, have been presented in various seminars at the Australian National University and several academic conferences. These conferences include the 2nd Indonesian Regional Science Association (IRSA) International Institute Conference in Bandung Indonesia (July 2009), ADEW 2015 in Monash University, and Indonesian Regional Science Association Conference in Manado Indonesia (July 2016).

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally.

Over the decades, Indonesian studies at the University have seen a growth in student numbers, staffing and diversity. Research and teaching relating to Indonesia is conducted across several Departments, Faculties and Centres, including: Architecture, Building and Planning, Arts, Business and Economics, Law, Medicine, Geography and Engineering. The Indonesia Forum was formed in 1991 as the Indonesia Interest Group. It changed its name in 1996, to standardise with other country forums throughout the university. The Indonesia Forum is an informal and open network of academics and administrative staff of the University who share a common interest and professional involvement in Indonesia. Members keep in touch by email and hold regular meetings, seminars and discussions.

Hadler Spring 2015 “Ripples, Echoes, and Reverberations: 1965 and Now in Indonesia” © 2015 Martha Stroud 1 Abstract Ripples, Echoes, and Reverberations: 1965 and Now in Indonesia by Martha Stroud Joint Doctor of Philosophy with University of California, San Francisco in Medical Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Nancy Scheper-Hughes, Chair In Indonesia, during six months in 1965-1966, between half a million and a million people were killed during a purge of suspected Communist Party members after a purported failed coup d’état blamed on the Communist Party. Hundreds of thousands of Indonesians were imprisoned without trial, many for more than a decade. The regime that orchestrated the mass killings and detentions remained in power for over 30 years, suppressing public discussion of these events. It was not until 1998 that Indonesians were finally “free” to discuss this tragic chapter of Indonesian history. In this dissertation, I investigate how Indonesians perceive and describe the relationship between the past and the present when it comes to the events of 1965-1966 and their aftermath.

Pd.I Email: [email protected] Abstract Mulla Sadra appeared with originality awesome when philosophy Muslims often accused of simply followed by philosophy of Plato and Aristotle. His philosophy gave birth to its own flow: al- Hikmah Al-Muta'aliyah. The flow is the object of the intellect of the philosophers skrutinisasi both Western and Eastern. A Magnum Opus inestimable contribution to the Islamic intellectual treasures. Characteristics of al-Hikmah al-Muta'aliyah which is the synthesis is the result of the combination and harmonization of the teachings of revelation, the sayings of the Imams, truths obtained through appreciation of spiritual illumination and intellectual, and the demands of logic and evidence rationally. Synthesis and harmonization is aimed at integrating the knowledge acquired through the means of Sufism or 'irfan, illuminationism or isyraqiyyah, rational philosophy or identical with the Peripatetic or masysya'iyyah and religious sciences in the narrow sense, including kalam. Thus, the appearance can not be separated from, and should be viewed in the context of Islamic schools of thought that preceded it. This paper aims to describe the focus of the discussion about the biography of Mulla Shadra, the works and the sources of his thinking, understanding and concept of al- Hikmah al-Muta'aliyah, the philosophy of being Mulla Shadra, analysis of building philosophy and the influence of his mind to the philosophers afterwards.
