Continuation from the Rabbi...

So while today, in nearly every democratic country, there are laws against child labor and laws protecting the rights of all individuals to receive an education provided by society, this is not the way things have always been. With respect to the Jewish People (Klal Yisrael) however, education for all children has been a way of life. State or community, sponsored education is not a recent innovation within Jewish society. And, even more profound, the fundamental nature of Torah education is a sharp contradistinction to that of general education. In truth, there are numerous differences, but these are just the symptoms rather than the cause. If we look into the birth and charter of Jewish education, we will come to see uniqueness and the sanctity of Jewish Education. Here at Beth Jacob our own Talmud Torah will be starting September 9th, our doors are open for every Jewish child to have a proper Jewish education. Please let families know that we are here to educate the future.

"And you shall teach them (the words of Torah) to your (children)" Devarim 11:19.

You should consider volunteering to change a Haftarah to recognize a special occasion, to commemorate a Yahrzeit or just because the more you do the easier it becomes. Beth Jacob has a few highly qualified members who can chant a Haftarah with no, or minimal, preparation. For the rest of us, however, some more time is required to prepare. What many of you might not realize is just how easy it is to learn to chant a Haftarah. If you have a basic ability to sound out the Hebrew letters, you are well on the way! You do not have to have a wonderful voice! There are many resources available to help you get underway! Please consider volunteering. If you are interested in volunteering, please advise: Simon Adler 519 745 8044 [email protected] Steven Norris 519 504 2858 [email protected] Rabbi Zuckerman 519 897 7224 [email protected] Beth Jacob Office 519 743 8422 [email protected]

SUMMER FUN

Schools out and some of our members’ children have been involved in exciting summer camp and travel experiences.

Cory Matlow, son of Eva and Larry Matlow, has been attending Camp Kadimah in Nova Scotia for six weeks every summer since he was six years old. His favourite activities are swimming and baseball.

Incidentally, Cory’s brothers and sister attended that camp as well, so the Matlows have been making the summer treck to Nova Scotia for the past 27 years.

Camp Kadimah, affiliated with Canadian Young Judaea, began 65 years ago and takes children ages 7 – 16 years. Cory Matlow & friends at camp

Ali Lubinsky, daughter of Lisa and Steve Lubinsky, has been attending Camp Winnebagoe in Huntsville, Ontario for the past three years.

Ali’s camp program is six weeks long and her favourite activities are sailing, water bicycles, yoga, tennis, and horseback riding.

Camp Winnebagoe began 40 years ago, and is a private, co- educational camp for children ages 7 – 16 years.

Devorah Dolman, daughter of Kim and Howard Dolman, participated in the Children’s International Summer Villages Program (CISV International), an international four-week camp- like program for 11 year olds. Devorah’s group was in the Philippines this summer.

CISV International, which began 50 years ago, is an independent and non-political organization with chapters in over 200 cities worldwide. This program brings students together from around the globe and is “…founded on the belief that a culture of peace is possible through education and through friendship. And that the real difference can be made by starting with young people.”

Mikaela Dolman, daughter of Kim and Howard Dolman, also participated in the CISV International Program, but in her age group the program is an “Interchange Program” for 12 – 15 year olds. Interchange takes place in two phases with one delegation visiting another country and then reciprocating by hosting the delegation from the country they visited. Mikaela just returned from two weeks in Washington, DC and will now be hosting her guest who will spend two weeks here in Waterloo.

Naftali, Avital, and Shmueli Zuckerman, children of Rabbi Nevo and Tamara Zuckerman, attended Camp Moshava in Peterborough, Ontario for one month this summer.

For over fifty years, Camp Moshava has been offering a unique summer experience, combining traditional camp activities with exciting thematic programming to create a Zionist atmosphere of Torah Va’Avodah. Camp Moshava, the only B’nei Akiva camp in Canada, accepts children ages 7 – 16 years.

Amitai Koschitsky, who occasionally teaches our Talmud Torah students on Shabbat, worked at Camp Moshava this summer. We have photos of him participating in the Colour War and talking with Shmueli.

Naftali, Avital, and Shmueli had a wonderful time making new friends and enjoying many special activities at Camp Moshava.
