The Spirit of Thorsby Shines TH RSBY TARGET The Spirit of Thorsby Shines “We were thrilled with the turnout.” said Economic Development Coordinator Carol Rempel. On Saturday, Septem- ber 21st we celebrated the Spirit of Thorsby in support of Taylor Park. We had a great volunteer team of 6 with 46 Sponsors, over 50 volunteers, 19 Vendors/Community Engagement tents with food & drinks like pizza, ginger beef, chicken satay, ice cream treats, rhodiola tea, homemade salsa, donair hotdogs, donuts, beer gardens and much more! Free entertainment, a great band (Wild Rose Roulette), children’s games & jumbo pong. The proceeds are all going to the future “Taylor Park”, a downtown arts & cultural park and community space to hold more events to support this wonderful town!     Canadian eview Focus on Electoral Reform. CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARY REVIEW/WINTER 2016 1 Made of copper and gold-plated, Ontario’s Mace was crafted in Ottawa in 1867. It is the third Mace to be used in the province’s history since the establishment of the Legislature during colonial times in 1792. The province’s first Mace was captured by American soldiers during the War of 1812 and later returned, and the second – dating from around 1845 - ended up in the federal parliament following Confederation in 1867 and was subsequently destroyed during a 1916 fire. Sitting underneath the crown within decorative leaves, the cup of the current Mace features the insignia of King Edward VII. The original cup bore the initials V.R. for Victoria Regina and was recently rediscovered among the collection at the Royal Ontario Museum. It is now on display in the Legislative Building lobby. In 2009, the first two diamonds mined in Ontario were mounted into the crown of the Mace. One was left in the rough to represent the mining process, and the other was polished to signify the value of the diamond industry in Ontario. The polished diamond was inscribed with the Legislative Assembly of Ontario’s motto Audi Alteram Partem – “Hear the Other Side”.     Leduc was first established in 1899, when Robert Telford, a settler, bought land near a lake which would later bear his name. It was on that piece of land where the new settlement would take root. Telford previously served as an officer for the North-West Mounted Police, and later became Leduc's first postmaster, first general merchantman and first justice of the peace. The establishment of the Calgary and Edmonton Railway, later acquired by theCanadian Pacific Railway, opened the region to settlement. The first train stopped at Leduc in July 1891. There are two versions of how Leduc got its name. According to popular local legend, the city's name was decided in 1890 when a settler (McKinlay) setting up a telegraph office needed a name for the new settlement and decided that it would be named after the first person who came through the door of the telegraph office. That person was Father Hippolyte Leduc, a priest who had served the area since 1867. In another, more official, version, the Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Territories, Edgar Dewdney (1835–1916) decided that Telford Place should be renamed at the time the railroad terminal was established in 1891, and picked the name of the missionary priest. Leduc was first incorporated as a village in 1899, and went on to become officially a town in 1906. It became a city in 1983. By that time its population had reached 12,000.
