St Mary’s University offers a wide range of venues and facilities, residential accommodation and catering options for events, conferences and meetings, set within the historic surroundings of the University’s Strawberry Hill campus in Twickenham, South West London.

Situated in a leafy area close to , Richmond upon Thames and Kingston, and within easy reach of both London Heathrow Airport and central London, our conference and event facilities are easily accessible.

Founded in 1850, St Mary’s University has a rich history of academic excellence, moving to its current location in Strawberry Hill in 1925. With an original intake of just six students, St Mary’s has now grown to around 6,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The University’s main campus is on Waldegrave Road in Twickenham, in the setting of the adjoining . The University also operates The Exchange in Twickenham, a newly built venue with a 300 seat theatre, five studio rooms, café and bar, and a large sports campus located in .

Strawberry Hill House, located in the University grounds, is Britain’s finest example of Georgian Gothic Revival architecture. It was designed and created as a Gothic fantasy between 1747 and 1792 by , historian, writer, collector and son of Britain’s first Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole.

Later owned by Lady Frances Waldegrave, the estate was expanded and renovated in the 1850s. Amongst the improvement works, Lady Waldegrave carried out extensive work on the University’s elegant Waldegrave suite. Comprising the Waldegrave Drawing Room, the Senior Common Room and the Billiard Room, the suite has since played host to Pope Benedict XVI, countless government ministers, Royals and senior Clergy, global sports stars and many esteemed academics.

The University’s beautiful campus encompasses stunning 19th Century listed buildings set in extensive grounds, state-of-the-art corporate facilities, relaxed informal spaces and world-class sporting facilities.

We have a range of venues available including our Grade I listed Waldegrave Suite which offers opulent surroundings for a unique and memorable event. We offer modern, tiered lecture theatres, both large and small, as well as plenary and syndicate rooms for conferences, private rooms suitable for confidential one-to-one meetings and classroom hire.

After a hard day’s work, delegates can unwind by taking advantage of the friendly and relaxing atmosphere of St Mary’s sporting facilities, bar and café areas, or by simply enjoying a stroll around the beautiful gardens of our historic campus.

Availability St Mary’s Conferences and Events can accommodate bookings in the impressive Waldegrave Suite all year round, but bookings in our classrooms and lecture rooms are generally restricted to evening and weekend use during term time due to the University’s academic timetable.

The Waldegrave Suite consists of the Waldegrave Drawing Room, Billiard Room and Bar, Senior Common Room and Ante Room.

The Waldegrave Drawing Room is the centrepiece of the Waldegrave Suite, and an impressive venue for any event. With three magnificent chandeliers spaced across an ornate high ceiling, intricately carved stone fireplace, beautiful silk wallpaper and Venetian flooring, the spacious Waldegrave Drawing Room is a truly elegant choice of venue, giving your guests a sense of occasion.

The Senior Common Room has high ceilings, impressive chandeliers, rich wallpaper and dark wood panelling. It retains the opulent quality of the Waldegrave Drawing Room, whilst providing a more intimate space for smaller groups for meetings, conferences, dining or cocktails and canapé receptions.

The Billiard Room is a light and spacious room with a fully stocked bar hidden behind its wooden panelling. This room works well when hired as the bar in conjunction with the Senior Common Room or Waldegrave Drawing Room.

The University Bar is perfectly suited to informal celebrations and birthday parties, wedding anniversaries or christening receptions.

The bar is fully-stocked and staffed, with occasional seating for up to 120 people and glass doors opening out onto a terrace with stunning views over the athletics track.

We have a number of lecture theatres and classrooms on campus which boast natural daylight, and built-in audio visual sound equipment to suit all needs.

We can cater for everyone’s requirements, from a formal drinks and canapés reception, an informal finger buffet, to a plated sit down meal with wine waiters. We are experts in our field and would be pleased to work with you to ensure we deliver the style of catering you’re looking for.

In addition, the campus’ Refectory is located in the centre of campus and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekdays, and brunch and dinner on weekends. The Refectory is the main dining space on-campus, freshly cooked meals are served daily and there is a wide range of sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

Dolce Vita is our stylish campus café which features a large patio area with impressive views over the sports track and rugby pitch. In addition to it serving your favourite Starbucks latté or frappuccino, there is a range of sandwiches, salads, toasted sandwiches and paninis.

We are delighted to be able to offer on-site accommodation over the summer period in our student halls of residence. Whether you are hosting a residential conference, summer school, activity camp or reunion, our charming campus has accommodation to suit your requirements.

The vast majority of our rooms are singles, although we do have some twin rooms in our Victorian Waldegrave Park houses situated on a pleasant residential road at the edge of the campus.

Our standard accommodation has shared bathroom facilities and our more superior rooms are en suite. All of our accommodation includes access to a shared kitchen with basic self-catering facilities.

The Exchange is a newly built community venue with a 300 seat theatre, five studio rooms, a conservatory café and a bar. Situated opposite Twickenham station, The Exchange is owned by Richmond Council and managed by St Mary’s University.

The venue can be used for a wide range of activities, from performances to conferences, festivals and presentations. The versatile auditorium offers tiered theatre seating for 300 people. The conservatory is perfect for a workshop or drinks reception for up to 80 people.

Purpose-built meeting rooms are available for training, small boardroom style meetings and conferences. The flexible auditorium space, meeting rooms and conservatory are all available for whatever function you have in mind.
