Attributed to the Bard William Shakespeare, the time of year in this spotlight was destined to become a precursor of foreboding: “Beware the Ides of March,” a soothsayer said to Julius Caesar in the play. From another source the famous historical exchange went like this: Caesar (jokingly): The Ides of March are come. Seer: Aye, Caesar, but not gone. Picture the scene: the well-to-do swanning around in togas, slaves in tow; chariots running over plebs at random in the streets; centurians rolling dice; senators whispering and plotting overthrows behind closed doors while sharpening their daggers – this was ancient Rome on the 15th March 44 B.C. Jolly Julius was sauntering on his merry way to the Theatre of Pompey, blissfully unaware that he was soon to be the star of the show as he was stabbed by no less than 60 conspirators; including his former mate Brutus to whom he commented with his dying breath: “Et tu, Brute?” And so, the Ides, for Caesar at least, turned out to be the last and worst day of his life. Maybe as well as the bucket, he also kicked off a new trend, because it wasn’t always like that. Prior to Jules messing with it, the ancient Roman calendar was complicated. Rather than numbering days of the month from the first to the last, some bright spark decided it was better to count backwards. He was probably trying to prove he was smarter than the average Roman; seeing as he understood his own calculations, whereas it was doubtful many others could. -

The Punishment of Tarpeia and Its Possible Iconographic Inspiration*
2017 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE PAG. 43–55 PHILOLOGICA 2 / GRAECOLATINA PRAGENSIA THE PUNISHMENT OF TARPEIA AND ITS POSSIBLE ICONOGRAPHIC INSPIRATION* LENKA VACINOVÁ ABSTRACT The motif of the Punishment of Tarpeia is surprisingly rare in Roman visual arts. However, the surviving examples show iconographical unity and imply their common primary visual source of inspiration. The article is exploring the possible models considering the less obvious iconograph- ical similarities and resemblances in terms of content found in the Greek art. The cases of the infamous intriguer Dirce and traitor Dolon are dis- cussed, as well as the remarkable resemblances found on some images of the Death of Caeneus. While the latter indicates the inspiration based on free associations and the similar circumstances of death of the both protagonists, Dolon and Dirce seem to influence the creator of the icono- graphic scheme of the Punishment of Tarpeia in a more straight way. Keywords: iconography; Tarpeia; betrayal; punishment; exposure; nudity Roman art is abundant in the iconographic paradigms borrowed from Greek visual arts, as well as in scenes with no such close and apparent parallels. The story of Tarpeia ’ s treachery and her punishment seems to belong to the latter group. The tragic tale of a girl who, enchanted by the golden bracelets of the enemy, betrays Rome to the Sabine king Titus Tatius under the promise of “what the Sabines wear on their left hands” and who instead meets her fate under a pile of their shields (which the Sabines unfortunately also carry on their left arms), is dealt with both by Greek and Latin authors in a quite different versions.1 On the contrary, the scarcely preserved depictions of Tarpeia seem to share almost the same iconographic scheme. -

Brian Rose, Supervisor of Dissertation This dissertation investigates how Rome organized and paid for the considerable amount of labor that went into the physical transformation of the Middle Republican city. In particular, it considers the role played by the cost of public construction in the socioeconomic history of the period, here defined as 390 to 168 B.C. During the Middle Republic period, Rome expanded its dominion first over Italy and then over the Mediterranean. As it developed into the political and economic capital of its world, the city itself went through transformative change, recognizable in a great deal of new public infrastructure. -

Department of Classics, March 2011. ADVISOR: Stacie Raucci Propertius was a Roman elegist writing during the early years of Augustus’ reign as emperor. His fourth and final book of elegies has long confounded scholars due to its drastic shift in subject matter from love elegy to aetiology. So, too, did the poet’s political stance seem to change: vehemently anti-Augustus in his earlier books, a number of poems in his fourth seem to extol both the sociopolitical climate of Augustan Rome as well as the emperor himself. -

Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

We will begin with the story of the Trojan war and Aeneas’s journey and end with the over throw of the kings of Rome and the early parts of the Roman republic. Section 1 - The Research and Sources– ____________________________ 1. You will have a topic to research from "the list" below. You will add your info to a wiki page you create for your topic. 2. You will need to have your wiki page completed for me to check by the date above. 3. Include your sources, properly formatted [MLA style], at the bottom of your wiki page. You must have at least 3 separate sources. Some of the topics have audio clips that can be used as one of your sources, but you must have other sources. 4. You will need to read Livy’s “ab urbe condita” [“From The Founding of the City”] in translation to get the best parts of the story. Some of you can listen to the audio files, but not all stories are there. I have linked several sources on our DISD Latin page. Section 2 – Illustration of Your Topic Presentations – ___________________ 5. Your final product will be a comic strip, comic book, or movie about the story you’ve chosen to research. [Yes, you may put your drawings on a ppt, but it should not have the whole story typed out on some slides. -

Brief History of the Roman Empire -Establishment of Rome in 753 BC (or 625 BC) -Etruscan domination of Rome (615-509 BC) -Roman Republic (510 BC to 23 BC) -The word 'Republic' itself comes from the Latin (the language of the Romans) words 'res publica' which mean 'public matters' or 'matters of state'. Social System -Rome knew four classes of people. -The lowest class were the slaves. They were owned by other people. They had no rights at all. -The next class were the plebeians. They were free people. But they had little say at all. -The second highest class were the equestrians (sometimes they are called the 'knights'). Their name means the 'riders', as they were given a horse to ride if they were called to fight for Rome. To be an equestrian you had to be rich. -The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called 'patricians'. All the real power in Rome lay with them. Emperors of the Roman Empire -Imperial Period (27BC-395AD) Augustus: Rome's first emperor. He also added many territories to the empire. Nero: He was insane. He murdered his mother and his wife and threw thousands of Christians to the lions. Titus: Before he was emperor he destroyed the great Jewish temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Trajan: He was a great conqueror. Under his rule the empire reached its greatest extent. Diocletian: He split the empire into two pieces - a western and an eastern empire. -Imperial Period (27BC-395AD) Hadrian: He built 'Hadrian's Wall' in the north of Britain to shield the province from the northern barbarians. -

Palmer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Alain M. Gowing Department of Classics This dissertation investigates the ways in which authors writing during the reign of the emperor Augustus, a period of increased epigraphic activity, appropriate epigraphic conventions in their work. Livy, Ovid, and Virgil furnish case studies to explore the ways in which Augustan authors create epigraphic intertexts that call upon readers to remember and synthesize literary and epigraphic sources. Investigation of Livy is foundational to my discussion of Ovid and Virgil because his selective treatment of epigraphic sources illustrates how inscriptions can be both authoritative and subjective. Augustan poets exploit the authority and subjectivity of inscriptions in accordance with their own authorial purposes and the genres in which they write, appropriating epigraphic conventions in ways that are both traditional and innovative. This blending of tradition and innovation parallels how the emperor himself used inscriptions to shape and control
