He Will Come to Judge the Living and the Dead The Twenty-fourth Sunday afer Pentecost

november 14–16, 2020 Trinity Lutheran Church waukesha, wisconsin

Welcome to Worship We like to think we are non-judgmental, but the reality is we are constantly judging things. No one watches a movie without subsequently concluding if it was good or not. When you interview for a job or go on a frst date, you are being sized up…judged. We cannot even buy a piece of fruit without frst giving it a squeeze, judging its ripeness. Life is non-stop judgment. Yet, most are unimportant. There is only one judgment that really matters. We speak of it regularly in worship when we confess, “He will come to judge the living and the dead.” Today, we pray that God keeps us mindful of that Last Judgment that we might be found in faith, fruitful in both word and deed. Then there is no need to fear ; rather, we can look forward to the day.

Our Facilities Our restrooms are located to the lef as you leave the sanctuary. They are located near the coat room. The members of Trinity believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. If your young child needs to be quieted, we have an audio-equipped children’s room just outside of the church doors to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher.

Our Communion Practice We believe that gathering together at God’s altar to receive Holy Communion is a testimony of the confession and commitment we share as members of the Lutheran Church. We ask guests who are not members of our Lutheran denomination to speak with one of the pastors before joining us at the altar so that all may have a clear understanding of our faith and practice. Those worshipers attending communion, please make a record of your attendance on the yellow contact cards located within your service folder. Thank you. 2 Serving in Worship

Invocation

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins to the Lord.

Holy God, gracious Father, We are sinful by nature and have sinned against you in thoughts, words, and actions. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved others as we should. We deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, our Savior, paid for our sins with his innocent sufering and death. Trusting in him, we pray:

Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.

4 Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifce for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray.

Lord God Almighty, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may always look forward to the end of this present evil age and to the day of your righteous judgment. Keep us steadfast in true and living faith and present us at last holy and blameless before you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

First Reading Daniel 7:9,10,13,14

The prophet Daniel sees a vision of the Last Judgement. We can withstand that way because of the Son of Man.

9 “As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was faming with fre, and its wheels were all ablaze. A river of fre was fowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened. 13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.”

Gospel Acclamation 1 Thessalonians 5:9

All sing the refrain. The verse is read or sung by the minister/cantor. b œ œ œ œ œ & œ œ œ œ œ ˙ œ œw Al- le - lu - ia! Al- le - lu - ia! Al- le - lu - ia!

6 Refrain

For God did not appoint us to sufer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Holy Gospel Matthew 25:31-46

On the last day, the Son of Man will separate the sheep from the goats.

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his lef. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked afer me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his lef, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fre prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look afer me.’

7 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Words of Institution

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my + body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my + blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen.
