SERVICE OF WORSHIP THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT March 15, 2020 GATHERING OF GOD'S PEOPLE Welcome * Songs of Worship PSALM 86 (ANTIPHON) Refrain: Hear, O Lord, and answer me For I am poor and needy For I am poor and needy (spoken) Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to you all day long. Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. Hear my prayer, O LORD; listen to my cry for mercy. Refrain For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God. Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; Give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. Refrain By Thy Mercy Jesus, Lord of life and glory, Bend from Heav’n Thy gracious ear; While our waiting souls adore Thee, Friend of helpless sinners, hear: By Thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord. From the depth of nature’s blindness, From the hardening power of sin, From all malice and unkindness, From the pride that lurks within: By Thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord. When the world around is smiling, In the time of wealth and ease, Earthly joys our hearts beguiling, In the day of health and peace, By Thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord. (note new verse) When the world around is frightening, In our fear and our disease, When life beggars understanding Grant us, Lord, once more your peace By Thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord. In the solemn hour of dying, In the awful judgment day, May our souls, on Thee relying, Find Thee still our Rock and Stay: By Thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord. Your Love O Lord Your love oh Lord Reaches to the heavens Your faithfulness Stretches to the sky Your righteousness Is like the mighty mountains Your justice flows Like the ocean's tide I will lift my voice To worship You my King I will find my strength In the shadow of Your wings * Prayer of Adoration HEARING THE WORD Scripture Reading: Matthew 6: 5-15 (See end of bulletin for Scripture) Leader: This is the Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God. This is our God You are the One we have waited for You are the One we have waited for You are the One we have waited for Jesus, Lord and Savior This is our God PRAYING FOR RENEWAL Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *The Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. *Thanksgiving Song: “Jesus Victor at the Cross” May the broken ones among us meet the Healer, And the thirsty drink the water of new Life. Grant those who grieve to meet the risen Savior. Let all who chance upon us meet the Christ. Jesus, victor at the cross, Holy Redeemer, we count all else as loss. We have tasted living bread, At your banquet all are fed– May your kingdom come. Let the way of weakness be for us a treasure, Since the life laid down is raised again anew. Pour out your Holy Spirit without measure, As we live out the life that comes from you. Jesus, victor at the cross, Holy Redeemer, we count all else as loss. So that we may know you, Christ– Bear your cross and share your life. May your will be done. Let the stranger find his welcome as a brother; And the outcast, in the church, a sister be. Let the powers that see the Church's witness tremble As we display God's new humanity. Jesus, Victor at the cross, Holy Redeemer, your life for us has brought All divisions to an end, Proclaimed the peace that you intend. May your kingdom come, May your will be done, May your kingdom come. Offering SENDING FORTH INTO GOD'S WORLD Announcements * Benediction *Congregation Standing—Please stand if you are able. Hear the Word of the Lord from the gospel according to Matthew: (Matthew 6: 5-15) NIV “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
