According to the journal citation reports from clarivate, the journal, with this classifi cation, is considered as the most powerful scientifi c journal in the country with an impact fac- tor of 1.927. According to the center, this was the result of several factors, the most important of which is a noticeable increase in the number of journal citations from interna- tional research, and the quality of the research published in recent years, as well as the diversity of the research and its non-repetitive topics, which positively affected the level of research published in the journal and the reputation of the center and the university. Queen awards NHS for gallantry UK must live with the virus, says Johnson LONDON, July 5, (AP): British Prime Minister Bo- ris Johnson is expected to unveil plans Monday to scrap mandatory mask-wearing and social distanc- ing in England in two weeks’ time, despite surging coronavirus infections driven by the highly conta- gious delta variant. Johnson said he would set out how the country would “learn to live with this virus” - a major shift in tone from a leader who has previously painted COVID-19 as an enemy to be vanquished. Before a televised news conference on Monday afternoon, Johnson signaled that mandatory mea- sures would be replaced by personal choice after July 19, the date dubbed “freedom day” by Britain’s populist press. “As we begin to learn to live with this virus, we must all continue to carefully manage the risks from COVID and exercise judgment when going about our lives,” Johnson said. That message will be wel- comed by lockdown-skeptic lawmakers in Johnson’s gov- erning Conservative Party, who say the economic and social damage of restrictions outweighs the public health benefits. But in the not too distant future SARS- CoV-2 will probably just be another cause of the common cold that we catch every few years.” Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II has awarded the U.K.’s highest civilian award for gallantry to the National Health Service, offering a handwritten message of thanks to the public organization and its workers on its 73rd anniversary. In a message written on Windsor Castle statio- nery, the monarch said it gave her great pleasure to give the award from a grateful nation. NHS staff have been lauded throughout the COVID-19 pan- demic for working tirelessly to save lives and vac- cinate the public amid an outbreak that has killed more than 128,000 people, the most in Europe. “Over more than seven decades, and especially in recent times, you have supported the people of our country with courage, compassion and dedica- tion, demonstrating the highest standards of public service,’’ the queen wrote. “You have our enduring thanks and heartfelt appreciation.” The award came as Britain prepared for a service of thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London to com- memorate the public healthcare service’s founding and honor workers on the frontline of the fight against CO- VID-19. Among those taking part are the doctor who treated the U.K.’s first known victims of the virus, the nurse who delivered the first dose of vaccine and vac- cine scientist Sarah Gilbert, who designed the Oxford University-AstraZeneca vaccine. The Duchess of Cambridge was forced to cancel plans to attend because she is self-isolating after com- ing in close contact with someone who later tested positive for COVID-19. Prince William, the Duchess’s husband, contracted the disease last spring. “Her Royal Highness is not experiencing any symptoms, but is following all relevant government guidelines and is self-isolating at home,” Kensing- ton Palace said in a statement Monday. The George Cross was created by the queen’s fa- ther, King George VI, at the height of the Blitz in 1940 to honor “acts of the greatest heroism or of the most courage in circumstances of extreme danger.” This is only the third time the George Cross has been awarded to a collective entity. Malta was honored in 1942 for the fortitude displayed by its citizens when the island was besieged by Nazi forces. Amazon says its carbon footprint grew 19% last year

The UAE is currently producing around 2.7 million bar- rels per day under the OPEC+ agreement, though it aver- aged around 3 million a day between January 2019 and March 2020, according to Refinitiv, a financial market data provider. Analysts suggest the country can easily produce up to 4 million a day. Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman told the Al-Arabiya broadcaster late Sunday “a bit of ratio- nality and a bit of compromise” was needed. He added that in more than three decades of OPEC meetings, he’s “never seen such a demand” and that he is neither optimistic nor pessimistic about Monday’s resumption of talks. Per Magnus Nysveen, head of analysis at Rystad En- ergy research and consultancy firm, said for the UAE to get what it wants, Saudi Arabia may need to make further cuts to its output. “If the UAE were to have a higher quota going forward, it would only be Saudi Arabia that can reduce production on their side,” he said, explaining that the kingdom has done voluntary cuts before and could be willing to concede in order to keep OPEC together. Still, that could be a hard sell because both countries are in need of oil revenue to buoy their economies, which have been rocked by the pandemic and lower oil prices. There are political differences between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well, to consider. Saudi Arabia and the UAE were closely aligned in past years, mirroring the budding relationship that had developed between Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Moham- med bin Zayed and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. So close were the two de-facto leaders that the two countries launched into a war in Yemen together and cut ties with neighboring Qatar together. In late 2017, the two nations announced a new partnership to coordinate in all military, political, economic, trade and cultural fields. But in recent years, national interests have diverged. The UAE dramatically downsized its footprint in the Sau- di-led coalition battling Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen. The Saudis moved to rapidly restore diplomatic ties with Qatar earlier this year, but the UAE has yet to restore full diplomatic relations and continues to block Qatar-based news sites like Al Jazeera. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia on Sunday suspended all flights to and from the UAE, lumping it with Ethiopia, Vietnam and Afghanistan as coronavirus risks. The king- dom has expressed concern over the fast-spreading delta variant, which has appeared in the United Arab Emirates. In recent days, the kingdom changed its law for goods imported from Gulf Arab countries to exclude from a pref- erential tariff agreement imported goods produced by any Israeli-owned companies, as well as goods with any com- ponents produced in Israel. Such products have prolifer- ated in the UAE following the country’s normalization of ties with Israel. In February, Saudi Arabia warned companies that if their regional offices are not moved to the kingdom by 2024, their contracts with the Saudi government and its institutions would be suspended. The decision is seen as a direct call to companies with regional offices in the West- ern-friendly UAE financial hub of Dubai to pick up and relocate to Riyadh. And if supply chain bottlenecks ease, shippers are likely to lower their rates. But, Keating says, “the second scenario is that infl ation takes hold, and as the old saying goes, once the infl ation genie is let out of the bottle, it’s not easy to get back in.” Luongo has found that just about everything that goes into making and shipping an air conditioner or heating unit costs more. “Copper prices gone through the roof - there’s copper in every air conditioning product and lots of it,” he says. And Luongo’s suppliers are paying more for shipping containers that are in high demand; one manufacturer told Luongo that it only fi nds out how much it has to pay for a container on the day the ship carrying its products sets sail. Total Home Supply is more likely to pass along an increase to a general contractor building homes than to consumers who can go to chain stores for air con- ditioners. “We very carefully weigh pricing decisions for each item and do our best to stay competitive while trying to maintain a profit margin we can live on,” Luongo says. Service providers are equally pinched by higher infl a- tion. With more homeowners remodeling since the start of the pandemic, supplies of paint, lumber and other ma- terials have fallen and their prices have soared, forcing general contractor Victoria Staten to change her pricing policies. “We’ve gone from guaranteeing estimates for 30 days to just fi ve days,” says Staten, owner of The Upside Chi- cago. Staten is also pricing labor and materials separate- ly, rather than providing an all-inclusive estimate as she did pre-pandemic. The scarcity of materials is also adding to Staten’s costs - it can take several days to fi nd items like crown moldings that used to be found easily. She’s been absorb- ing the labor costs involved in these shopping trips but is considering adding staffers’ extra time to her invoices. Manny Balani’s vitamin and supplement business is paying dramatically higher prices for shipping, packag- ing and ingredients. Miami-based A1 Supplements can pay $10,000 for space on a container ship, compared with $2,000 before the pandemic, and $400 for a kilogram of protein or other ingredients, up from $50. Balani has to pass increases along to customers, but instead of raising prices across the board, he’s taking a product-by-product approach. He’s boosted prices on some items as much as 30%, matching the manufactur- ers’ price hikes. Now he’s watching to see if customers keep buying at the higher price tags. “We take it day by day,” Balani says. “The market will dictate whether those numbers are bearable.” ARAB TIMES, TUESDAY, JULY 6, 2021 SCIENCE 11

‘Nobody’s winning’ Drought upends life in the US West basin

TULE LAKE, Calif, July 5, (AP): Ben DuVal knelt in a barren fi eld near the California-Oregon border and scooped up a handful of parched soil as dust devils whirled around him and birds fl itted between empty irrigation pipes. DuVal’s family has farmed this land for three genera- tions, and this summer, for the fi rst time, he and hundreds of others who rely on a federally managed lake to quench their fi elds aren’t getting any water from it at all. As the farmland goes fallow, Native American tribes along the 257-mile-long (407-kilometer) river that fl ows from the lake to the Pacifi c watch helplessly as fi sh that are inextricable from their culture hover closer to extinction. This summer, a historic drought and its consequences are tearing communities apart and attracting outside attention to a water crisis years in the making. Competition over Klamath River water has al- ways been intense, but now there is simply not enough, and all the stake- holders are suffering. “Everybody depends on the water in the Klamath River for their live- lihood. Show fi nds new home Armchair Expert enters new phase on Spotify

NEW YORK, July 5, (AP): When Dax Shepard and Monica Padman recently welcomed Harry, the Duke of Sussex, on their “Armchair Expert” pod- cast, the chat with the prince settled a debate be- tween the two of them. “We’ve been arguing about royalty for a year and a half because (Padman) loves ‘The Crown’ and I’m always poo-pooing it,” said Shepard. “That just felt very simulation theory like, what are the odds now that we have a representative of this debate who is going to join us in person? And, then, what are the odds I’m going to just fall in love with the dude because he’s so normal and was in the army and stuff?” “I remained in love,” quipped Padman during a recent interview ahead of the podcast making Spotify its exclusive home on Thursday. “Armchair Expert” isn’t the fi rst or only podcast to feature long-form conversations, but Shepard’s no-airs approach to his guests often gets them to let their guard down. Shepard In the interview with Har- ry, Shepard broke the ice by showing him a calendar Padman had made for him as a joke featuring various male body parts that he aspires to emulate. (Shepard has long pontifi cated about his appreciation of a fi t, strong, male physique and even dedicated an “Armchair” episode to the topic.)
