But the release of the results of the City Council and borough president races, which were supposed to be made public after the citywide races, was stalled as the BOE employed quality control checks to ensure further mistakes weren’t made. Released around 10 p.m. on Friday, July 2, the results gave voters their first glimpse into how ranked-choice voting shapes – or in plenty of cas- es, doesn’t shape – races for local office. Passengers taking the A train were stuck in stations for nearly two hours as the MTA patched up the South Channel Bridge after it wouldn’t ful- ly close on Monday, July 5. The issues began during prime beach hours, beginning around 1 p.m. and lasting until around 2:40 p.m., according to the MTA. Joseph Reid, who was travelling to the beach from his home in Brooklyn, said riders were stuck in the Broad Channel station waiting for the train to move while receiving little to no in- formation. “We got on and then just sat there, the doors open, sitting there and sitting there and the con- ductor was saying the typical, ‘we’re being held in the station’ kind of thing. But then this is go- ing on for 20 minutes,” Reid said. “Then the con- ductor said, ‘they’re conducting some kind of tests and that’s all the information we have right now.’” Soon after the announcement, NYPD of- ficers began popping into every car to let riders know they should head out of the station and onto a nearby bus if they want to get moving as soon as possible. Eventually, all straphangers were told to exit the train and to find an alternative way to get to the beach. The traditional Macy’s Fourth of July fire- works show returned in full form with a display over the East River, as shells were shot from five barges in a televised, choreographed spectacle. This year, crowds were welcome to gather. The show was broadcast live on NBC as part of a two-hour special featuring artists includ- ing the Black Pumas, Coldplay, OneRepublic and Reba McEntire. The performers’ appearances were pre-recorded around the country in front of live au- diences. Last year, because of pandemic restrictions, there were a series of shorter fireworks shows in the days leading up to the holiday, with the loca- tions kept secret in advance to keep people from congregating. “It’s hugely significant because we’re all back together again.
