The survey was introduced as a way of gathering resident input for the natural resource inventory. There were a total of 195 resident responses. The following is an overview of the results. Question 1: Rank each of Gilford’s natural resource features of importance to you using 1-3. (1 = Most Important, 2 = Somewhat Important, 3 = Not Important) For question one, residents found water quality as the most important feature. Residents found cemeteries as the least important feature. The following table contains the percentages of the respondents’ beliefs. Not all 195 residents responded, so the number of respondents is listed as well.   • Winnipesaukee Brook Trout Summary
    Winnipesaukee Brook Trout Surveys 2010 NH Fish & Game The many watersheds that comprise the drainage of the Winnipesaukee River were recently surveyed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. These surveys were part of a statewide effort to quantify the presence of self-sustaining brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) populations and to gather some preliminary information on their habitat. These surveys also provide some information on the region’s general fish community. An assessment to determine the status of brook trout within this region of New Hampshire is of particular interest to the overall goal of protection because information regarding this watershed does not currently exist. Current information indicates brook trout populations are abundant and secure to the north of the Winnipesauke River watershed, while impacts to habitats and localized extirpations appear to have reduced populations to the south of this region. As this region continues to grow, more pressure is placed on the ability to sustain water quality and habitat for wild brook trout populations. Background Brook trout are the only native stream dwelling trout species in New Hampshire, having a historic range that extended from Georgia to eastern Canada. It is believed that wild brook trout were once present throughout all watersheds in New Hampshire. Increased stream temperatures, changes to water chemistry, habitat fragmentation, increased rates of predation and competition, loss of spawning locations, and the loss of stream habitat complexity have led to reduced and isolated populations of wild brook trout both in New Hampshire and throughout the species’ native range in the eastern portions of the United States.

The CSPA list is available on the NHDES website. Public waters in New Hampshire are prescribed by common law as great ponds (natural waterbodies of 10 acres or more in size), public rivers and streams, and tidal waters. These common law public waters are held by the State in trust for the people of New Hampshire. The State holds the land underlying great ponds and tidal waters (including tidal rivers) in trust for the people of New Hampshire. Generally, but with some exceptions, private property owners hold title to the land underlying freshwater rivers and streams, and the State has an easement over this land for public purposes. Several New Hampshire statutes further define public waters as including artificial impoundments 10 acres or more in size, solely for the purpose of applying specific statutes. Most artificial impoundments were created by the construction of a dam, but some were created by actions such as dredging or as a result of urbanization (usually due to the effect of road crossings obstructing flow and increased runoff from the surrounding area).

(1 m) thick is present over much of the surface of the map area but is not shown. The lower part of this layer is generally mixed with underlying surficial deposits. Much of the swamp in the State Merrymeeting Wildlife management Area is probably underlain by lake-bottom deposits of Glacial Lake New Durham Qst Stream terrace deposits (Holocene and Pleistocene)—Sand, pebbly sand, gravel, and minor silt on terraces cut into former glaciofluvial and glaciomarine deposits and till. From 5 to 15 feet thick. Formed along the Merrymeeting River near Alton and Alton Bay as the drainage reversed from south-flowing to north-flowing when a lower, northern outlet for glacial lake New Durham and glacial lake Winnipesaukee became ice free Qac Alluvial-Colluvial deposit—Late-glacial, poorly sorted gravel and sand deposited as a dam in upper Coffin Creek drainage STRATIFIED GLACIAL SAND AND GRAVEL (Pleistocene)—Sand, silt, and pebble to boulder gravel, well-sorted to poorly sorted and stratified, as much as 130 feet thick.
