Since 1975 ISPA has recognized hundreds of individuals for their contribution to the performing arts and their communities. The Guadalajara 2019 award recipients are as follows (biographies attached): Distinguished Artist Award Presented to artists who have made an outstanding contribution of talent, artistry, dedication, and service to the world of the performing arts. Mario Espinosa As a prominent theatre director and arts manager in Mexico, Mario has served as Executive Secretary for Mexico’s National Fund for Culture and the Arts, National Coordinator for the Theatre of the National Fine Arts Institute, and Theatre Coordinator for the Mexico City Secretary of Culture. Angel Award Recipient Presented to an individual or organization which has demonstrated a significant and lasting contribution to the support of the performing arts which transcends the boundaries of one country or institution, and merits international recognition. Susan Chapman M.B.E. (Director of Anglo Arts, The Anglo Mexican Foundation) The Anglo Mexican Foundation’s Anglo Arts program diversified and grown over the years to become the most important private sector arts project in Mexico incorporating the presentation of performing and visual arts both in Mexico and the UK. The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held during the Guadalajara 2019 ISPA Congress, The Strength Within Us, on Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Santander Performing Arts Centre. # # # [BIOGRAPHIES OF THE AWARD RECIPIENTS] Diego Luna 2019 Distinguished Artist Award Recipient Diego Luna Alexander is a Mexican actor, director, and producer. He has appeared in many films, including Y tu mamá también, Milk, Rudo y Cursi, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He is one of the founders and owners of Canana Films. From an early age he began acting working in tv, movies, and theater. His first television role was in the movie The Last New Year (1991). His next role in the Mexican soap opera El abuelo y yo (1992). His childhood best friend and fellow actor Gael Garcia Bernal played the title role. After El Abuelo y Yo, Diego began to receive more and more parts in theater, movies and TV. His big break came in 2001 when he was cast in the critically acclaimed Y Tu Mamá También (2001), once again alongside his best friend Gael García Bernal, as Tenoch Iturbide. His star continues to shine and he is making a name for himself in the American market such as starring alongside Bon Jovi in Vampires: Los Muertos (2002) and the Oscar winning Frida (2002). In 2014, he starred in Havana Nights: Dirty Dancing 2', the prequel to Dirty Dancing, and is working on more projects in both Latin America and the United States. Luna gained greater recognition with American audiences while starring as Mexican drug cartel leader Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo in the Netflix series Narcos: México, which premiered in November 2018. Javier Camarena 2019 Distinguished Artist Award Recipient Originally from Xalapa, Ver., Camarena began his studies at the Faculty of Music of the Universidad Veracruzana and graduated with honors from the Bachelor of Music at the University of Guanajuato. Winner of the National Singing Contest Carlo Morelli in 2004, made his debut in a starring role as Tonio in "The Daughter of the Regiment", by Donizetti, at the Palace of Fine Arts. In 2005, he won the first place in the Juan Oncinas Singing Contest in Barcelona. Later in 2006, he joined the International Opernstudio in Zurich, under the tutelage of Mtro. Francisco Araiza. In 2014, accompanied by Mtro. Ángel Rodríguez on piano, presented his debut album RECITALES that includes Italian and Mexican folk songs and this 2015 launches SERENATA that includes only popular Mexican music with the participation of Mtro. Armando Manzanero as a special guest, both albums recorded live. Elisa Carrillo Cabrera 2019 Distinguished Artist Award Recipient Elisa Carrillo Cabrera is the Prima ballerina of the Berlin State Ballet. Born in Texcoco, State of Mexico. Her formation as a professional dancer began on the National Classic and Contemporary Dance School of the National Institution of Arts and Literature of México (INBAL) and then on the English National Ballet School in England. She has a degree as teacher of Ballet given by the Ministry of culture from the German Republic and the John Cranko Schule Stuttgart in Germany. She is also the Ambassador of Mexican Culture, designated by the National Council for the Culture and the Arts (Conaculta) and the Mexican congress. She also is member of the International Dance Council by the UNESCO and co-artistic director of the National Dance Company in México. Nacida en Texcoco, Estado de México. Su formación como bailarina profesional comenzó en la Escuela Nacional de Danza Clásica y Contemporánea del Instituto Nacional de Artes y Letras de México (INBAL) y luego en la Escuela Nacional de Inglés de Ballet en Inglaterra. Es licenciada como profesora de ballet por el Ministerio de Cultura de la República Alemana y John Cranko Schule Stuttgart en Alemania. También es la Embajadora de la Cultura Mexicana, designada por el Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes (Conaculta) y el congreso mexicano. También es miembro del Consejo Internacional de Danza de la UNESCO y co-directora artística de la Compañía Nacional de Danza en México. Mario Espinosa 2019 International Citation of Merit Recipient Trained professionally at the University Theater Center of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, a fellow in the past by the International Theater Institute in Germany and the British Council in England, Espinosa worked until a few days ago as the theater coordinator of the Instituto Mexicano del Social Security (IMSS), where he often combined his tasks of theater promotion throughout the country with his work as stage director. Among his most recent productions are those of the operas Fausto, by Gounod; La Traviata, by Verdi, and La hija de Rapaccini, by Octavio Paz, in addition to Blanco's Room , by Estela Leñero, and Palinuro on the Staircase, by Fernando del Paso. Formado profesionalmente en el Centro Universitario de Teatro de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, becario en el pasado por el Instituto Internacional de Teatro en Alemania y por el Consejo Británico en Inglaterra, Espinosa fungía hasta hace unos días como coordinador de Teatro del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), donde a menudo combinaba sus tareas de promoción teatral en todo el país con su labor de director escénico.
