  • K-12 Classroom Teacher Needs Assessment Survey Results
Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center K-12 Classroom Teacher Needs Assessment Survey The purpose of this survey was to gather information from K-12 educators within the Minnesota Lake Superior Coastal Program area regarding their needs and interests pertaining to coastal zone resources and environmental education (EE). Survey distribution and collection took place during the 2006-07 school year. Information from this survey will be used to help develop future projects for schools and funding priorities to address identified educational needs and barriers. In this study, 55 K-12 schools were identified in the Minnesota Lake Superior Coastal Zone. The schools ranged from Carlton, through Duluth, and up the North Shore of Lake Superior to Grand Portage, MN. Each school principal was asked to select one representative teacher from each grade level category to assess the needs of the faculty in those grades as they responded to the survey. Some of the participating schools contained grades K-12, thus being asked for four teachers to respond, whereas a K-5 school may have only had two teachers complete surveys. 114 surveys were distributed to these 55 schools in Northeastern Minnesota. Of these, 56 surveys were returned from the following districts and schools. The results from these surveys are provided in this document. Sampson, President Zeitgeist Arts Building 222 East Superior Street Suite 302 Duluth, MN 55802 218-726-0232 218-726-0257 [email protected] www.dsacommunityfoundation.com Scholarship Nights Are On the Calendar Duluth, Minnesota – Scholarship Nights, the big kickoff of the scholarship year, will be held at local high schools in the next several weeks. Scholarship Nights provide the ideal venue for students and parents alike to identify all available resources, while also having an expert on hand to answer any questions. Each Scholarship Night is tailored to the students of the school where the event is held. Administrators from local scholarship providers, including the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, the Marshall H. & Nellie Alworth Memorial Fund and Northland Scholarship Services will introduce the various awards and explain how to apply. Among other things, they will stress the January 15th application deadline. “The school year has just started, but it’s not too early to start thinking about scholarships,” says Alworth Fund Executive Director Patty Salo Downs. “Now is the perfect time to start working on your application.” David Hammer, Scholarship Officer at the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation continued “Few cities in the nation have the bounty of scholarships that is available to graduates of our local schools. Generous benefactors have created a plethora of awards for local students – each with its own special niche. Academics are important for some, but other awards, like the Minnesota Power Community Involvement Scholarship, stress community contributions and volunteerism. There’s something for everyone.
