Pregnant Workers Fairness Act Faith Sign-On
September 11, 2020 Dear Representative, On behalf of the undersigned religious and faith-based organizations representing a diversity of faith traditions and communities across the nation, we write today in support of healthy workplace environments and conditions for pregnant workers. We urge you to pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (H.R. 2694). People of faith across the ideological spectrum understand that prioritizing the health and safety of pregnant workers should not be a partisan issue. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act would ensure that pregnant workers can continue safely working to support their families during a pregnancy. The bill requires employers to make the same sort of accommodations for pregnant workers as are already in place for workers with disabilities. Our faith traditions affirm the dignity of pregnant individuals and the moral imperative of ensuring their safety. We also affirm the dignity of work and the obligation to treat workers justly. It is immoral for an employer to force a worker to choose between a healthy pregnancy and earning a living. By passing the bipartisan Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (H.R. 2694), Congress will ensure that workers who are pregnant will be treated fairly in the workforce and can continue earning income to support themselves and their families. Efforts to distract from the central goal of ensuring pregnant workers can maintain their health and the health of their pregnancies by inserting unnecessary, harmful, and politically divisive language into this bill undermines our obligation to protect pregnant workers across our country. While many pregnant individuals continue working throughout their pregnancies without incident, there are instances when minor accommodations are necessary at the workplace to ensure the safety of the expecting mother and the baby. -
Judaism Hava Tirosh-Samuelson Awareness of the Ecological Crisis
Judaism Hava Tirosh-Samuelson Awareness of the ecological crisis has transformed all academic disciplines, including the humanities, the disciplines that inquire about values, norms, meanings, languages, and cultures. Beginning in the 1970s, but increasingly in the 1980s and 1990s, a growing number of humanities scholars have begun to argue that ecological issues are not marginal but foundational to their disciplines. Thus historians traced “connections between environmental conditions, economic modes of production and cultural ideas through time” (Glotfelty & Fromm 1996, xxi) and explained the interplay of physical nature and human culture. Philosophers and ethicists explored how humans should interact with the environment as well as the theoretical justifications of these directives, extending the scope of moral considerability to non-human nature and identifying objective and universal ground, or grounds for environmental value. The result was the emergence of distinct strands of environmental thought—Social Ecology, Deep Ecology, and Ecofeminism—each with its own analysis of the causes for the ecological crisis, the salient ethical dimension, and the proper response to the crisis. And literary scholars applied the science of ecology and ecological concepts to the study of literature, giving rise to what has been known as “literature-and-environment studies,” “green cultural studies,” “environmental literary criticism,” or “ecocriticism” (Buell 2005, 11-12; Garrard 2012). Ecocritics tie their cultural analyses to “green” moral and political agendas, while insisting that the study of “the relationship of the human and the non-human throughout human cultural history” (Garrard 5) be based on familiarity with the science of ecology. Problematizing and erasing the boundaries between the “human” and the “non-human,” ecocriticism is closely linked to other interdisciplinary, postmodern, and critical discourses such as animal studies (), trans- and posthumanism, and postcolonialism. -

Betty Duvall This autoethnographic research explores learning,teaching, and leading from the perspective ofan adult woman who is both a non- traditional student and a non-traditional workerin the academy. Because she returned to school at theage of forty to earn a bachelor's degree, and is currently an associate professor ofeducation following more than twenty years of work in the private sector withan additional seven as a high school teacher, she focuses thispersonal exploration on academia, seeking to better understand her place inan evolving educational culture in which she is both insider and outsider, learner andteacher. By providing insight into her learningprocesses and products, she also provides opportunities for readers to reflecton the ways in which they learn as well as to better understand learner diversity. In the process of articulating theways in which she learns and linking them to her passion for teaching,the author began to formulate a theory, Home.Makers of the Academy: TheValuing-and Devaluing-of Teaching, that proposes a connection between thehistorical role of the homemaker in the American family and the academichomesmaking evidenced in caring, connective teaching. This developingtheory is illustrated through pages that alsorepresent her learning processes which she calls connectivity, or the linking of disparatesources to create new meaning. Connectivity is also used by the authorto refer to the intertwining of activities within a life of creative integrationwhere multiple facets of a person's life interconnect rather thancompete. -

Rhodes Chair of the Commission New York State Public Service Commission Empire State Plaza Agency Building 3 Albany, NY 12223-1350 August 6, 2018 Dear Governor Cuomo and Chair Rhodes: We, the undersigned organizations, representing tens of thousands of New Yorkers, urge you to ensure all people living in New York have the option to accelerate the transition to 100% renewable energy, as promised by former Chair of the Public Service Commission Audrey Zibelman and by you in your 2017 State of the State address on Long Island. August 1 marked the two-year anniversary of the decision to enact a “Clean Energy Standard.” That policy, while moving New York toward its commitment of 50% renewable energy by 2030, has already forced those who are opposed to nuclear power to contribute to approximately $643 million in subsidies to prop up uneconomical, dirty, and dangerous nuclear reactors. The policy also creates a situation in which those who choose to purchase 100% clean renewable energy could see their investments used to lower the renewable energy obligations of utility companies instead of contributing to additional renewable energy production above the State’s targets. We ask for the right for all New Yorkers to use our buying power to bring about a carbon-free and nuclear-free energy system. New Yorkers who wish to purchase 100% renewable energy should be able to do so in a way that pushes the State further and faster toward a phase-out of all polluting and dangerous fuels, including fossil fuels, nuclear, garbage incineration, and woody biomass. -

Laudato Si and the Sages: Reflections on Climate Justice Dear Colleagues and Friends, Shanah Tovah! As you prepare to welcome 5776, I invite you to connect with one of the most notable faith events of the year – Pope Francis’s visit to the United States just after Yom Kippur, during which he will speak about his encyclical on climate change and justice, Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home. At this time of year, as we reflect on how we have treated our fellow human beings and how we might better live up to God’s expectations of us, we have a special opportunity to examine our relationship with all of God’s creation – and the Pope’s encyclical provides us with an excellent way to do just that. To that end, I’ve selected a number of excerpts from the encyclical and paired them with Jewish sources ranging from the Tanakh, to midrashim, to Heschel, to rabbis of today. Here at Temple Hesed in Scranton, PA, I will be using this text study, “Laudato Si and the Sages: Reflections on Climate Justice,” on Yom Kippur afternoon, and we have invited the press and other faith communities as well. Please use it however it might work best for you: at High Holy Day Services, at a multi-faith gathering, at a social action weekend etc. The texts are presented in two formats. The first is a more complete four-page selection, designed for in-depth or multi-session discussions; it can be studied in a larger group setting, in hevruta, in small groups or in some combination.
