The streak of sadness in Keats’ poetry: understanding meaning through his structures and lexis Dr. Sukanya Saha VSWC, Chennai Tamilnadu India Abstract Keats‟ short and tragic life left him with fewer options to enjoy and celebrate the colours of nature and fruits of love. His odes communicate a host of emotions which strived to find expression. Keats‟ preoccupation with self, his fear of pain and death, his unfulfilled desires of love, his tendency to escape from the agonising present to nature or to a world of fancy are some predominant emotions which find their place in different forms in his poetry. Through all his odes, there runs a streak of sadness which connects his odes in a very eloquent manner. The sorrow reverberates throughout his odes in different fashion and haunts the reader in the same way as it haunted Keats himself. Keats‟ poetry has been a subject of appreciation and criticism both. The genuineness with which he voiced his feelings capture attention. Keats did not obscure his writing by adding complex tropes or intellectual allusions and employing intricate structures. Agreeable rhythmic patterns, simplistic structures and lexis retain interest and are prime reason for the admiration of his odes. The present paper studies the theme of sadness in Keats‟ odes. As we go through his famous odes we understand how his world was revolving around his lone self, its fears, desires and wishes. We also understand the way he handled sadness and pain and wished to escape repeatedly. The paper is an attempt to observe the structure and lexis of his odes and understand a connection between his style and theme. -

It draws on the romance tradition Keats would have encountered in his reading of Dante and Spenser. It also draws on traditional ballads. Using ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ as its main focus, this resource provides activities to prompt an in-depth analysis of Keats’s poetic techniques, as well as broader exploration of his literary allusions and afterlife in art, and possible creative responses for students and teachers to attempt. The following activities can be used to introduce ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ or extend learning you have already done in class. They can be used as a John Keats. SYDNEY STUDIES Keats, Women, and the Demon Poesy DEIRDRE COLEMAN When Keats abruptly claimed, in one ofhis letters, that 'What the imagination seizes as Beauty must be truth-whether it existed before or not', he expanded upon his somewhat gnomic text by adding: 'The Imagination may be compared to Adam's dream he awoke and found it truth'.l The allusion is to the nativity of Eve, as described by Milton in Book VIII ofParadise Lost. In this scene, Adam is laid asleep by God but in such a way that he is still able to see, by means of his 'fancy', the creation of Eve from his left rib. Miraculously, the gap between fiction (dream) and actuality closes, so that Eve appears, in the flesh, exactly according to the image of Adam's desire. Here is how Milton imagines the scene, in Adam's words: Mine eyes he closed, but open left the cell Of fancy my internal sight, by which Abstract as in a trance methought I saw, Though sleeping, where I lay, and saw the shape Still glorious before whom awake I stood, Who stooping opened my left side, and took From thence a rib, with cordial spirits warm, And life-blood streaming fresh; wide was the wound, But suddenly with flesh filled up and healed: The rib he formed and fashioned with his hands; Under his forming hands a creature grew, Manlike, but different sex, so lovely fair, That what seemed fair in all the world, seemed now Mean, or in her summed up, in her contained And in her looks, which from that time infused Sweetness into my heart, unfelt before, And into all things from her air inspired The spirit of love and amorous delight. -

JOURNAL OF CRITICAL REVIEWS ISSN- 2394-5125 VOL 7, ISSUE 09, 2020 Decoding the Past: Self-reflection and Presence of Feminine in John Keats’s Select Poems Noopur Baruah Freelance Scholar Assam Abstract This paper is an attempt to look at how Keats portrayed women in his poems and how women in his life had a great influence on him and his poems. The poem which I will be referring to are: - “Ode to Psyche”, “Stanzas to Miss Wylie”, “La Belle Dame Sans Merci”, “Lines to Fanny”. These poems are chosen because poems like Stanzas to Wylie were written in the earlier part of his career as a poet and poems such as La Belle Dame Sans Merci which was written in the latter part of his career as a poet. We see a gradual change in his perception of women from his earlier poems to his poems written in the later years of his life after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. His treatment of women has grown from naive appreciation to critical observation. We can see that the aesthetic sense got heightened concerning his treatment of women. So in a nutshell this paper will be an attempt to look at how Keats portrayed women in different ways and how his perception of women changed from narrow appreciation to a much broader understanding. Keywords: women, love, marriage, death, trust Introduction The Romantic Period is the period that ushered in the later parts of the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th century. The literature of this period cannot be termed as entirely new but it was in contrast to the literary scene which was prevalent in the eighteenth century. -

STEPHENS (Under the Direction of Richard Flynn) ABSTRACT Although many critics and theorists, including Roland Barthes, have discussed food in literature, little attention has been paid to the food-as-temptation story in children’s literature. In Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Neil Gaiman’s Coraline food is used as temptation for child protagonists, a tool to lure them into doing evil deeds or being generally mischievous. Some characters, like Alice, act as the tempters as well as the tempted, while others, like Edmund, wait passively for rescue. Coraline breaks this model by featuring a protagonist that not only saves her kidnapped parents by using food as a weapon, even after she is tempted by food herself. -
