Sacred Harp Singings 1995 & 1996 Note from Shelbie 2 Minutes Style Guide 3 Computer Instructions4 1996 Directory 5 Annual Singings 5 Fifth Sunday Singings17 Local Singings 18 1995 Minutes 25 ONLINE EDITION January 1, 1996 Dear Singers and Friends of Sacred Harp, We are pleased to provide the Directory and Minutes of Sacred Harp Singings for 1995 and 1996. Over the years this book has been an invaluable guide to singers and friends of Sacred Harp all across the United States. An endeavor such as this is not accomplished by the effort of any one individual, so thanks are due to many people who provided invaluable assistance. The first thanks go to the secretaries who volunteer their services week after week, and whose work continues after a singing is a pleasant memory. They have also made an extra effort to submit their minutes in a timely manner, and that effort is especially appreciated. Sacred Harp singers are indebted to Keith and Jenny Willard for providing the computer software used to produce this book. Keith also installed the software and provided tutorial assistance. David Ivey performed the tedious task of proofreading each page, a special gift of time. Thanks to Chris Thorman who provided untold hours of technical assistance. Chris formatted the book and answered calls made in desperation. Carolyn Deacy designed the cover of this book, and is responsible for the book layout and design. Carolyn also made all the arrangements for printing, so to her we extend a special word of thanks. Thanks go to Edith Tate who provided valuable information and support. Thanks to Pam Nunn for technical assistance. Thanks to all those who provided regional assistance in updating of addresses. Finally, the gratitude of all the Sacred Harp people is extended to Nora Parker and the late Walter Parker for their dedicated work over the previous thirty years on this publication. I apologize in advance for any errors you find in this compilation of minutes. Please understand that mistakes in spelling of names and places are unintentional. Please submit in writing any corrections or changes, especially address changes, to me at the address below. Finally, I ask for your assistance in updating the driving directions to singings in the Directory. Please send directions that are specific and can be followed by someone who has never been to your singing. Make checks for minutes payable to the Alabama State Sacred Harp Convention ($25.00 per singing session). I encourage you to support Sacred Harp singing to the utmost of your ability in 1996! The following pointers may also be helpful: • Name/Location/Date Please start the minutes with three lines showing the name of the singing, the location, and the calendar date on which it was held. • Breaks Please indicate breaks using RECESS or LUNCH, capitalized and on a line by themselves. • Two-Day Singings Indicate the start of a second or third day of singing with the day and date spelled out on a line by itself. • Song Numbers Please list songs only by number. List the name of a song only if the song does not appear in The Sacred Harp, 1991 Edition. If two songs begin on the same page, be sure to add a “t” or a “b” onto the page number. For example: 31t or 49b. If a particular song is the only song beginning on its page, a “t” or “b” should not be used. For example: 306 (not 306b). • Name Spellings Please try to verify the spellings of all names. • Memorial Lesson When listing those memorialized, please indicate the state of origin where known and, if convenient, list those from the same state together. • Officers Please list the new officers at the end of the minutes, ending with the name of the secretary who is submitting the minutes. 3 COMPUTER INSTRUCTIONS If you are using a computer to prepare your minutes, you can save them from having to be re-typed by sending the minutes on disk. Both Macintosh and PC users are welcome to send disks. • Send a Printout Please always include a printout along with your disk. This allows us to re-type the minutes in the event the disk is damaged or unreadable. • Formatting Do not use bold, italics, underline, or other special formatting. Do not try to center the title. Do not type the title in upper case. These formatting elements will be added later. • Hard Returns Include hard returns (sometimes called ¶ marks) only at the end of paragraphs and single lines. Never insert returns in the middle of a paragraph — instead, allow them to wrap to the full column width. • File Format If you use Microsoft Word, save the file with a filename ending in .DOC. Or, if you use any other brand of word processor, save the file in Text Only format (this will disable any special formatting you may have used). If your word processor offers a choice between Text Only and Text Only With Line Breaks — be sure to choose Text Only because Text Only With Line Breaks will insert unwanted hard returns into the file. • File Name Please save your text file with a name that is only eight characters or fewer, plus the extension .DOC or .TXT For example: LIBERTY.DOC or UNITED.TXT. • Disk Format Please use a 3.5-inch floppy disk formatted for DOS. Macintosh users: if you have System 7.5 or later and/or PC Exchange, you can format a DOS disk using the Erase Disk command. If you have any questions about the above guidelines, please contact Chris Thorman at 415-431-7664, [email protected]. 4 SACRED HARP SINGINGS 1996 DIRECTORY ANNUAL SINGINGS Note: Fifth Sunday singings, in addition to being listed in this section, are listed in a separate section starting on page 17, along with explanations of the formulas for calculating their dates.
