Area of Study 2 Article on One Night The Moon by Maria Joseph Context: The Imaginative Landscape Article by Maria Joseph ONE NIGHT THE MOON Directed by Rachel Perkins One Night the Moon is directed by Rachel Perkins and was released in 2001. Perkins is an Indigenous Australian, an Arrernte woman from the Central Desert region near Alice Springs. She grew up in Canberra, the daughter of renowned Aboriginal activist Charles Perkins, who died whilst the film was in production. One Night the Moon is dedicated to his memory. Like her father, Perkins is concerned with the social and political rights of Aboriginals in contemporary Australia. Her films Radiance (1998) and Bran Nue Dae (2010) centre on Aboriginal issues, and her television series The First Australians (2008) gives an Aboriginal viewpoint of Australian history. Paul Kelly is a principal actor and musician in One Night the Moon, playing the father, Jim. As a musician he is known for his insightful lyrics that comment on modern Australian life. At the time of making One Night the Moon, Kelly was married to Kaarin Fairfax, who plays Rose. Their actual daughter, Memphis, plays Emily. The Imaginative Landscape in One Night the Moon At one level ‘The Imaginative Landscape’ can be simply interpreted as having to do with representations of the land. Writers and directors create the settings of their narratives in order to convey meaning. We all know that a thunderstorm or wild wind suggests something dramatic or tragic is likely to happen in the story. A narrative with a negative outcome or a critical message may be set in a landscape that conveys pessimism, such as a grungy cityscape. -

INDIGENOUS Tertiary Education Conference TRINITY COLLEGE 18 - 19 NOVEMBER 2016 PROUDLY PRESENTED BY FRONT COVER Image courtesy of the Hardy family WELCOME FROM TRINITY COLLEGE On behalf of Trinity College, the University of Melbourne it is my honour to welcome you to the 2016 inaugural Indigenous Tertiary Education Conference. We acknowledge that we live and learn on the land of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nations. The conference takes place in Trinity College’s new Gateway building, which is a tangible expression of Trinity’s commitment to higher education and to providing transformative experiences for young people of any nationality, ethnicity, race or creed. Trinity’s Indigenous programs have been developing since 2001 and are set in the context of the College’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous communities. The imperative of these programs is to implement practical steps that make a real difference to the lives of students and the communities to which they belong. The first major step taken by Trinity was to establish the Bachelor of Arts Extended pathway program, in partnership with the Faculty of Arts, Murrup Barak, and other residential colleges. Last year, the Faculty of Science formed a similar Bachelor of Science Extended pathway program. These programs are a unique and successful pathway model for Indigenous students in Australia. Trinity College, in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, has established this conference as a forum for educators, researchers, policymakers, students and the community. The conference theme will explore transitions into and within tertiary education and after graduation. I welcome our Australian and international Indigenous and non-Indigenous colleagues. -

First Winners of the 4Th Aacta Awards Announced in Sydney
Media Release – Strictly embargoed until 4:00pm Tuesday 27 January 2015 FIRST WINNERS OF THE 4TH AACTA AWARDS ANNOUNCED IN SYDNEY The 4th AACTA Awards Luncheon presented by Deluxe was today held at The Star Event Centre Sydney, celebrating screen craft excellence, and marking the first winners for the 4th AACTA Awards season. Twenty two awards were presented, recognising the talent and innovation of practitioners working across television, documentary, short fiction film, short animation and feature film. The remainder of 4th AACTA Awards will be presented at the 4th AACTA Awards Ceremony in Sydney on Thursday. Today’s event was hosted by writer/actor/producer/director Adam Zwar, whose AACTA and AFI awarded productions include Agony Aunts, Lowdown and Wilfred. Zwar, whose humour was in full force, was joined by outstanding presenters including AACTA President Geoffrey Rush, David Stratton, Damian Walshe-Howling, Alexandra Schepisi, Charlotte Best and Diana Glenn, to name a few. The talent pool was fierce this year with a number of productions bagging multiple nominations Including THE BROKEN SHORE, TENDER, UKRAINE IS NOT A BROTHEL and PREDESTINATION, all with five nominations. TELEVISION On the small screen the AACTA Award for Best Children’s Television Series went to Colin South and Keith Saggers for their show set in a tiny town called Whale Bay, home to a giant thong, ABC3’s THE FLAMIN’ THONGS. The AACTA Award for Best Direction in a Television Light Entertainment or Reality Series went to Beck Cole and Craig Anderson for Episode 3 of the ABC’s BLACK COMEDY, a ground breaking show, featuring an ensemble cast of Indigenous writers and performers. -

Senate Order for Entity Contracts listing relating to the period 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021. Pursuant to the Senate Order for entity contracts, the following table sets out contracts entered into by Screen Australia, which provide for a consideration to the value of $100,000 or more (GST Inclusive) and which: a. Have not been fully performed as at 30 June 2021, or b. Which have been entered into during the 12 months prior to 30 June 2021. Most of the contracts listed contain confidentiality provisions of a general nature that are designed to protect the confidential information of the parties that may be obtained or generated in carrying out the contract. The reasons for including such clauses include: a. Ordinary commercial prudence that requires protection of trade secrets, proprietary information, sensitive business information and the like and/or b. Protection of other Commonwealth material and personal information. The accountable authority of Screen Australia has assured that the listed contracts do not contain any inappropriate confidentiality provisions. The estimated cost of complying with this order was approximately $1,500. Basis of method used to estimate the cost: Applying salary costs to the number of hours spent by staff across various Departments to collect and analyse the information.
