The game features a threedimensional game engine and individual modeling of game character behaviors.Like its sibling release Children of the Nile in 2004, the game continues a new trend in the city building game genre to use more interactive and detailed game video game design and play. This means more realistic landscapes and city views, and the ability for players to better see and use game building space. In addition, buildings and roads may be placed at 45 degree angles to the playing grid, as well as aligned with the grid, allowing game players more options in creating efficient and visually appealing city layouts. The last is only available for people who preordered the game directly from Tilted Mill Entertainment. A Christy Top Contributor Coloring 5.0 out of 5 stars The heyday of such games included titles like Pharoah and the Cleopatra follow on, Caesar I, II and III and a host of other lesser known but fun works like Poseidan. Sadly, the rise of the action element in popularity means that dedicated long term games where your goal is to top your own game and compare your ability to create with others waned. Caesar III was one of my favorites and I bought this title, Caesar IV as soon as it came out years ago. At the time, however, my laptop couldnt handle the graphics and at some point I lost the game. Recently, I was retroing an old laptop so I could continue with Cleo, Birth of the Federation and the others when I remembered this title. A quick search on Amazon showed it was still being made and ready to ship. Of course, I clicked. It came well packed and within 2 days. No instruction book was included and, surprisingly, no PDF on the CD that I could find. Since this game is years old, it wasnt hard to find a site online that had all the instructions so I dont deduct for that. It is increasingly common in old games. The graphics were too advanced for the time of release, severely limiting who could run it effectively. It looks fresh and modern to my eyes now. Currently, Im running an i7 chipped laptop thats got all the higher end whizbangs to go with it and it runs like a dream. It even looks great on the HD screen despite the age. Definitely, ahead of its time there. For those wondering about compatibility, there is a 1. 2 patch out there youll need to download to fix some 1.0 issues but it is loaded just about everywhere, including Gamestop and the Tilted Mill sites. I run mine in Compatibility mode for XP with upgrade 2 just to ensure there are no kinks and Ive had none whatsoever. For gameplay, the progression is fairly standard for a city builder. You start out on easier missions and it gets harder fairly quickly once you get to the Empire missions. The choices have been expanded greatly so that almost every mission has a relatively peaceful mission choice as well as a military choice. Thats really nice for mixing it up. Its not a piece of cake to get these missions either and city design is important. You really have to think and plan to get it right. But they are a thing of beauty when done correctly. Like many others, Ive had the most issues with Prosperity since the combination of housing influences it more than anything and one naturally needs more Plebs than Patricians. Also, it isnt easy to make money in this one and I really love that it reflects a more realistic economic model. Overall, this is a great.no, fantastic.game for those who like the long challenge of building empires and one that you wont want to miss having in your collection. This game really isnt about fighting, but about designing a city that meets the goals that Cesar gives you for that scenario. Though some scenarios require you build an army to protect your city from invaders. You get revenue through setting up trade, taxing the local markets, and from the property taxes of the upper class citizens. But every building you build, and every worker you employ costs money, so you have to make sure you dont go into debt or your citizens will start fleeing the city, and that can cause a downward spiral that you cant recover from. Because they leave critical jobs open that cause even more people to leave. But you can tweak the priority of certain jobs, adjust the wage and tax rate.

Abstract The goal of this project is primarily to establish a collection of video games developed by companies based here in Massachusetts. In preparation for a proposal to the companies, information was collected from each company concerning how, when, where, and why they were founded. A proposal was then written and submitted to each company requesting copies of their games. With this special collection, both students and staff will be able to use them as tools for the IMGD program. 1 Introduction WPI has established relationships with Massachusetts game companies since the Interactive Media and Game Development (IMGD) program’s beginning in 2005. With the growing popularity of game development, and the ever increasing numbers of companies, it is difficult to establish and maintain solid relationships for each and every company. As part of this project, new relationships will be founded with a number of greater-Boston area companies in order to establish a repository of local video games. This project will not only bolster any previous relationships with companies, but establish new ones as well. With these donated materials, a special collection will be established at the WPI Library, and will include a number of retail video games. This collection should inspire more people to be interested in the IMGD program here at WPI. Knowing that there are many opportunities locally for graduates is an important part of deciding one’s major. I knew I wanted to do something with the library for this IQP, but I was not sure exactly what I wanted when I first went to establish a project.

Playing With People’s Lives 1 Playing With People’s Lives How city-builder games portray the public and their role in the decision-making process Senior Honors Thesis, City & Regional Planning Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for graduation with honors research distinction in City and Regional Planning in the Knowlton School of Architecture at the Ohio State University By William Plumley The Ohio State University May 2018 Faculty Research Mentor: Professor Tijs van Maasakkers, City and Regional Planning Playing With People’s Lives 2 Abstract – City-builder computer games are an integral part of the city planning profession. Educators structure lessons around playtime to introduce planning concepts, professionals use the games as tools of visualization and public outreach, and the software of planners and decision-makers often takes inspiration from the genre. For the public, city-builders are a source of insight into what planners do, and the digital city’s residents show players what role they play in the urban decision-making process. However, criticisms persist through decades of literature from professionals and educators alike but are rarely explored in depth. Published research also ignores the genre’s diverse offerings in favor of focusing on the bestseller of the moment. This project explores how the public is presented in city-builder games, as individuals and as groups, the role the city plays in their lives, and their ability to express their opinions and participate in the process of planning and governance. To more-broadly evaluate the genre as it exists today, two industry-leading titles receiving the greatest attention by planners, SimCity and Cities: Skylines, were matched up with two less-conventional games with their own unique takes on the genre, Tropico 5 and Urban Empire.

Your goal is to build a thriving Roman City—a bastion of culture and commerce that reflects the glory of Rome itself. As you begin your career, the lands you administer will be small, but Caesar rewards success with promotions and more challenging assignments.

  • The Following Pages Contain Historical Information About the Divinities, Cities, and Provinces That Play a Role in Concordia
The following pages contain historical information about the divinities, cities, and provinces that play a role in Concordia. In addition, a variant is presented. VARIANT FOR CONCORDIA: START WITHOUT GOODS In this variant the players do not own any goods at the start of the game. Their storehouse starts with only 4 colonists. Instead they start with more money: The start player has 25 sestertii, the 2nd player 26 sestertii etc. In their first turn players may buy goods as they like paying the prices as shown on the roof of the storehouses. This variant offers an even more flexible start of the game. Development Notes For Concordia In more than 2 years of development, Concordia had many testers and helpers. Peter Dörsam as publisher and critical tester wholeheartedly supported the project from its very beginning. In private rounds basically Yvonne Lange, Stephan Borowski, and Jens Külpmann endured my manifold proposals and leaded them ad absurdum over and over, so that everytime new changes became inevitable. In addition, Lars Brügging, Claudia Barmbold, Frank Lamprecht, Kai Wilke, Rüdiger Kuntze, Benjamin Schönheiter, Bastian Völkel, Heike López, and Michael López tested the game as busy as a beaver. Gaming groups l i k e the gamers from Rieckhof, Gert Wahlstedt‘s Urania club, the gamers of Wedel, or „Game with Pete“ in Jork also were engaged. For a broader public Concordia was presented in ever changing versions on the event at Burg Stahleck, the Bremer Spieletage, the Hamburger Fest der Spiele, the Hamburger Spieletage, and the Herner Spielewahnsinn. I visited Paulo Soledade in Portugal to present the game at LeiriaCon, and visited Pietro Cremona in Italy to present it at the Play in Modena and at his gaming club in Cesena, where it was played with great enthusiasm.

DESIGNING GAME ANALYTICS FOR A CITY-BUILDER GAME Karoliina Korppoo University of Tampere School of Information Sciences (SIS) Information Studies and Interactive Media Master's Thesis May 2015 UNIVERSITY OF TAMPERE, School of Information Sciences (SIS) Information Studies and Interactive Media KORPPOO, KAROLIINA: Designing Game Analytics for a City-Builder Game Master's thesis, 74 pages May 2015 The video game industry continues to grow. Competition is tough as games become more and more popular and easier for the users to get, thanks to digital distribution and social media platforms that support games. Thanks to the readily available internet connections and games using them, data of player behaviour can be acquired. This is where game analytics come in. What sort of player actions provide meaningful information that can be used to iterate the game? Typically game analytics is applied to multiplayer games or free-to-play social network games, not to single player games. This case study focuses on the design of game analytics for Cities: Skylines (Paradox, 2015), a modern city-building sandbox game. The writer of the thesis is the lead designer of Cities: Skylines, so the perspective to the work is from inside the games industry and on how metrics are designed alongside game design. The results of this study show that some practices used with free-to-play game’s analytics can be used with more classic games, but that sandbox simulation games are very challenging for game analysis. This is due to how sandbox games strive to support player self-expression and cater to many different playing styles.
