VILLAGE POINTE CINEMA – NIGHT Long tables adorned with black tablecloths form a makeshift booth in the lobby of the theatre. Laid out on the tables are promotional postcards and posters for over 100 films, all beckoning to would-be audience members: “Come to the show!” FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS stand behind the booth, anxious smiles stretched across their faces, all of them eager to help out when called upon. A FEMALE VOLUNTEER is pulling stacks of booklets out of a box; upon closer inspection, we see that these are festival guides for the 11TH ANNUAL OMAHA FILM FESTIVAL. Across the street at THE FUNNY BONE, SCOTT KURZ and AARON ZAVITZ are working with the most well-oiled machine of actors you can find in this city, putting the finishing touches on the Writer’s Theatre performance. JULIE MATTHEWS, a tall drink of water who looks like she should be a CEO, steps back behind the booth and calls the Volunteers over into a huddle. It’s obvious that Julie runs the volunteers (and the festival directors). The door to the projection booth opens and out steps MARC LONGBRAKE, the Program Director, with his mane of long, flowing, gorgeous hair trailing behind him. He’s just finished talking with the FESTIVAL PROJECTIONISTS, most of whom have been with the festival since year one. Through the front doors of the theatre stumbles JASON LEVERING, the Executive Director, his gray beard unshaven and hair mussed, he is most likely drunk or hung-over. He gets that way this time of year. Jason is intercepted by JEREMY DECKER, the Festival Director, who can still pass for Joaquin Phoenix. Jeremy is riding on a unicorn. No one questions how Jeremy found a unicorn, it just is. Jason and Marc join Jeremy on the unicorn and they trot down to Theatre 10, where they need to check sound levels for the opening night film. This particular cyclical genre influx was notable for the resurgence and reformulating of the amateur sleuth; this time remerging as the gifted police consultant, a figure capable of insights that the police could not manage. I term these new shows ‘consultant procedurals’. Consequently, the genre moved away from dealing with the ills of society and instead focused on the mystery of crime. Refocusing the genre gave rise to new issues. Questions are raised about how knowledge is gained and who has the right to it. With the individual consultant spearheading criminal investigation, without official standing, the genre is re-inflected with issues around legitimacy and power. The genre also reengages with age-old questions about the role gender plays in the performance of investigation. With the aim of answering these questions one of the jobs of this thesis is to find a way of analysing genre that accounts for both its larger cyclical, shifting nature and its simultaneously rigid construction of particular conventions.

    Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen.
