’M ESPECIALLY PLEASED TO BE STEPPING into the role of Chair for the next two years. My deepest appreciation to all of the outstanding Ileaders and mentors who previously served as Board Chair, and in whose footsteps I follow. As a business owner, I am keenly aware of how important it is to have a high-quality medical center in our community to serve residents, employees and visitors. In fact, I became involved with Adventist Health Glendale as I learned more about its Comprehensive Stroke Center. I have proudly supported the hospital’s advancement and growth in this area because our community is fortunate to have it. It can be the difference between life and death. One of my priorities during my term on the Board will be to engage Helen McDonagh, other businesses and individuals and urge them to support the hospital Chair, Foundation as well. Whether this involvement is through volunteering their time and Board of Directors expertise or by making a charitable monetary donation, I believe as a community we all have an important role to play in local health care. I invite each of you to get involved in some way. I know that you will find it as rewarding and enriching as I have.

Appreciating our rehab clinical team

E FEATURE THE STORY IN THIS EDITION of a patient recovering from a stroke and receiving the finest care by the W hospital’s physical medicine and rehabilitation team. Many of our donors and friends frequently compliment this service, one of the most life-changing and life-enhancing programs that a patient and family can experience. Sometimes it is re-learning basic life skills like walking or eating, and recovering fine motor skills. Sometimes it’s the simple joy of being able to play golf again or hold a grandchild in one’s arms. No matter how challenging the rehab journey or how large or small the gains in progress, patients tell me over and over again how much they appreciate our clinical team. And most touching of all, how these amazing physicians, therapists and nurses have Irene Bourdon, MPH, CFRE become family to generations of patients. President, Adventist Health I hope you enjoy and learn from these features on the rehab program, Glendale Foundation plus a variety of other articles and photos that will update you on our mission in action.

16 Glendale Foundation A classic day of golf at Annandale! Golfers support patient care at the hospital — and have a great time

NNANDALE GOLF CLUB, one of the Los Angeles area’s classic, historic courses, was the site A of Adventist Health Glendale Foundation’s 35th Annual Golf Classic late last summer. More than 100 golfers participated, including physicians, civic, business and industry leaders — and by all accounts, they all had a great time! Through the generosity of sponsors, donors, golfers and friends, the Foundation’s annual tournaments have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase medical equipment for programs of greatest need in the hospital. “It was a perfect day for golf at Annandale,” said Foundation President Irene Bourdon. “I wish to thank everyone who took part — golfers, volunteers, and espe- cially our sponsors who made this tournament possible! The event was a great success. As always, our patients and the medical care they receive are the real winners.” Special appreciation for their leadership goes to Parking Company of America, event co-chairs Lance Lee, MD, Craig Missakian, Adventist Health Medical Staff: emeritus chair Harlan Gibbs, MD, and the Golf Classic Rich Cordova, Pep Valdez , planning committee. 27 ‘Light Up a Life’: Hope, comfort, Care Hero: remembrance and celebration! A small gesture that’s truly meaningful

The Foundation is presenting a new program called Care Hero, which pays tribute to nurses, physicians and every- one else on the hospital’s health care team for an exceptional act of caring and/or overall service. In addition, you are invited to make a donation in the honoree’s name, which will go toward patient care in the hospital.

Dr. Marguerite Marsh lights the Christmas Tree, joined by ( from left) Alice Issai, hospital president; Alice Parsons Zulli, chaplain; and Wende De Pietro, Home Health Services director.
