Yearbook-2010.Pdf Unless you’ve actually worked on a school year book, you really don’t know how much time, organisation, patience and effort it takes to create one. This year, Ms Dootson’s Year 12 Business Management & Enterprise 1C/1D class were primarily responsible for the development of this book. Our year twelves spent many hours planning, designing, creating and editing pages, hoping to capture memories specifically for their peers. They should be congratulated, and thanked, for their efforts. Assisting the class, I would also like to acknowledge the following contributions: ♦ Ms Beth Aitken (Proofread & Editing) ♦ Mrs Caroline Green (Proofread & Editing) ♦ Mrs Kelly Paris (Proofread & Editing) ♦ Craig Stewart Photography (Official School Ball photos) ♦ Academy Photography (Official School photos) ♦ ALCOA Australia (Pinjarra) financial contribution ♦ PSHS Administration team for their clerical support ♦ PSHS staff for their contributions Thank you to all that have made this Year Book a success. © Please note that all content in this Year Book remains the property of it’s respective creators. Principal's Address The time has come for another graduating class to make its way in a world where school is a memory, apart from the visits and updates we hope you will make. To some extent, school has been a regulating factor in each of your lives. From now on, you will assume greater responsibility for the decisions you make and the paths you choose. Prior to finishing school, your week days were punctuated with the parts that made up the school day. From now on, your day will take on new structures and you will be your own manager in many ways, with the advice and support of your families and friends. Hav ing seen your development over time, I feel confident that you are ready for these next stages in your lives and that you have the wisdom to make good, sensible decisions about the factors that will impact on you . Although we can’t predict the future or say with confidence where we will be or what we will be doing in five or ten year’s time, we can set ourselves some broad goals that will be valuable no matter where our paths lead us. Although we often take good health for granted, it is during our youth that future health is determined. In a modern society such as ours, there are many distracters that can impact on our health. So do keep up your exer cise in whatever form suits you. And take care to treat your bodies with the care they deserve. Ensure you use the information available to you to make good choices about the foods you eat and what you drink. Value your health and think about what you know and need to do to remain healthy. I wish you good health. Always believe that you can aim high. Each one of you has the capacity to be successful. Your successes may include further study, sport, careers, family and finances. Believe in yourselves and make the commitment necessary to create your own successes. I have been delighted with the way in which members of your class have grown and developed. Your willingness to participate, your concern for each other, your commitment to completing school well and your cooperation with the school and the staff have been features of this class of Year 12s. Your group has been characterised by its care for its members, its inclusiveness and its kindness. On be half of the school staff, the Parents and Citizens As sociation and the School Council, I wish you happi ness and health with long and productive lives. Sincerely Beth Aitken Principal 2010 1 From the Deputies Mrs McLarty’s Address I have had the pleasure of knowing you, the Year 12 class of 2010, for the five years of your schooling at Pinjarra SHS. It has been a pleas ure and it is to the credit of many people that you have made it to this point in your education. I’d particularly like to acknowledge the role of Ms Brown as your Year Coordinator for four years. She thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of guiding you through your teenage years and it was with great re gret that she moved to Kununurra at the start of this year. Yet it was her success as your Year Coordina tor that helped her promotion. She has taken an ac tive interest in your achievements this year. Few oth ers would have flown from Kununurra to Perth to be with you at the School Ball and I know she wishes you all well for the future. It may not become apparent for a number of years the achievement of successfully completing twelve years of schooling but you should leave with a sense of pride that you’ve persisted to this point. Reflect back on those who aren’t with you, who found other paths rather than see through their secondary education to Year 12. Some will also find success in their lives but there is no doubt that by stay ing at school, you accepted a great challenge. Hopefully, you will take on board the lessons and values of this journey and use them well to further develop your character and personality. The hidden curriculum has been significant in helping this. I often identify four Habits of the Mind that are cornerstones to ensuring suc cess at school. They are: confidence, organisation, persistence and getting along with others. Belief in yourself and reinforcement from others underpins confidence. You will have needed a lot to get this far. This last year is probably the toughest and your self-belief would have been tested on many occasions. Hopefully, the support you have received from this school and your family would have enabled you to remain confident in your ability to succeed. For many years I’ve observed that it isn’t necessarily the naturally bright and gifted who are the most successful at school, it is more often the hard workers and these people are usually well-organised. Organisation is a learned skill and, if you’ve mastered it, you have a critical building block to future success. Balancing study, work, leisure, family commitments and other demands on our time is a challenge for anyone. 2 Mrs McLarty & Mr Mitcham As the saying goes: when the going gets tough the tough get going. Stick at it and persevere through the challenging times and seek sup port when you are flagging. Don’t give up. This brings me to the fourth and probably most critical Habit of the Mind for life long success - getting along with others. It’s critical to maintain relationships with your family, friends and teachers. People who work at communicating effectively usually find that others are there for them in times of need. When you reflect on your time at school over the last twelve years you will recognise times when you’ve succeeded with having these Habits of the Mind and others when you will have been found wanting. The most important outcome is to always seek growth and improvement and be a lifelong learner. Hopefully, your education at Pinjarra Senior High School has set you up well to do that. Best wishes for the future. Meredyth McLarty Mr Mitcham’s Address Congratulations on completing Year 12. I say completing because not everyone has graduated and of those who have graduated not everyone has done as well as they might have. For many and varied reasons school can be a challenge; family issues, personal issues, relationship issues, grief, misfortune and illness can make school a difficult row to hoe. So, I congratulate you for seeing it through and, given the circumstances you faced, doing the best you could. Well done to the students who have excelled academi cally, in the sporting arena and through community service. I look forward to those achievements being ac knowledged on graduation night because while they are your achievements, they are also your parents’ and the school’s achievements and we are very proud of you. Equally, we are proud of the people you are grow- I ing into and proud of the maturity and responsibility □zayou display as young adults. I wish you well for the future and look forward to hearing of your future success. I hope you learn from your time at Pinjarra Senior High School and that you go on to be the best you can in whatever field of endeav our you choose. Above all else, I hope you stay safe and make wise de cisions. Good luck. Paul Mitcham 3 Chappo's Contemplations Well, as I look at your cute little faces in your Year 8 photos from 2006, I can’t help but wonder what ever happened?? Only joking! It’s been awesome seeing you grow into the wonderful young adults you have become, and I count it a real privilege having had the opportunity to share in your lives over these last five years (maybe a bit less for some of you ring-ins from Waroona DHS etc.). How does it feel having 12 years of schooling finally over with?? Yeee-Haah!! I hope you leave Pinjarra SHS with a heap of great memories. I’ve certainly had a ball sharing time with you on camps and all sorts of excursions, at assemblies (yay...), glamorous balls, Peel carnivals, World Cup Days (it’s not often you get to shoot at students), concerts, Yohfest, Countryweek events and Pinjarra Idols.

AUSTRALIAN HIP HOP’S MULTI- 13/ CULTURAL LITERACIES / A SUBCULTURE EMERGES INTO THE LIGHT / TONY MITCHELL uch has been written in recent years about the relationship between hip hop Mculture, pedagogy and youth literacies in an African-American context (Ibrahim 2003; Dimitriades 2004; Ginwright 2004; Richardson 2006). However, hip hop is also being used increasingly in the broader educational contexts of language learning and popular culture studies both in the US and throughout the rest of the world. Hip Hop Studies is now a discipline taught in US universities (Forman & Neal 2004) and is gradually spreading to educational contexts in other parts of the world. In Hiphop literacies, Elaine Richardson (2006) argues for “the depth, the importance, and the immediate necessity of acknowledging one of the most contemporary, accessible, and contentious of African American literacies, Hiphop literacies” (p.xv). She sets out to locate hip hop discourses “within a trajectory of Black discourses” and to consider hip hop as an oral and semiotic form of discourse, analysing “rap music and song lyrics, electronic and digital media, including video games, music videos, telecommunication 231 SOUNDS OF THEN, SOUNDS OF NOW / POPULAR MUSIC IN AUSTRALIA devices, magazines, ‘Hip hop’ novels, oral performances, and cinema” (Richardson 2006, p.xvi). Richardson’s study is restricted by two major limitations. Apart from looking at the use of African-American language in online German hip hop sites, neither considers the indigenising global spread of hip hop beyond the boundaries of African-American vernacular cultures, nor the non-linguistic but fundamentally semiotic aspects of hip hop such as beatboxing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti writing, which are arguably of equal importance to MCing as hip hop literacies.
