Mark Spencer MP Update COMPETITION WINNERS I like to think I’m a man who’s known for looking on the bright side of life, so you 2 x Family Fun Day Passes to know I’m not being melancholy or melodramatic when I say that I believe within a the Southwell Racecourse. generation the lights are going to go out. I simply do not believe that our current energy infrastructure is sufficient to support our growing needs and I believe that Question: What is the cost for there is an urgent need for action. Service and MOT at Renault Coop?

But don’t take it from me; a recent report by the Centre for Policy Studies said Answer: £89 “The UK has installed electricity capacity of 77GW; it is expected that by 2016, it will face a shortfall of 32 GW as older coal, nuclear and oil plants are closed, and The Winners of the Family Fun Day Passes are: as demand increases” and there isn’t a house in Sherwood unaware of the recent 1. Steve Beamish climb in energy prices. All this at a time when we import Russian gas and are 2. Nick Allen laying cables under the Channel to buy French nuclear. So what to do? Well I think Well done to our Winners. the answer lies pretty close to home. Those of you aware of my politics on energy will know that I believe firmly that as a country we need to have an non-emotive and constructive debate on nuclear power, but nuclear is academic when it comes to COMPETITION: Win 2 Tickets for our immediate needs: we simply wouldn’t get the plants up and running in time. For those keen on wind or solar power (currently providing just 0.4% of global energy demand) I fear their role will, at least in the Southwell Racecourse short term, only ever be an auxiliary one. All of which leads me to coal. Referring to Tony Lodge’s report: “Coal is plentiful, indigenous, relatively Ladies day on 14th August cheap, flexible and responsive to peaks and troughs in demand, can be stored, is not prone to outages, and Courtesy of the Co-operative Motorgroup Mansfield is not vulnerable to geo-political risk. Only nuclear power can match these advantages.” So those are the Question: Name the 3 prizes on offer advantages, what’s the downside? Traditionally, coal has always been criticised on environmental grounds and those criticisms were largely for Ladies on Race day? founded. Times are changing. Clean coal technologies are online and available to us right now: for example See the website for details and hints! in , Powerfuel’s new clean coal site is even backed by Friends of the Earth. There are various options; carbon abatement/capture (CCS) “capturing CO2 from power plants, transporting it, usually in pipe www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk lines and finally storing it”, flue gas desulphurisation where watered down limestone is sprayed into Entries to the Editor by 12th July please. chimneys, harnessing flue gas as gypsum and reducing CO2 emission or integrated gas combined cycle [email protected] (IGCC) which is a near zero emissions clean coal solution. Domestically, embracing clean coal technologies would offer us unparalleled fuel reliability and bring down significantly electricity bills in the home. Internationally, developing countries like China and India (China is currently constructing the equivalent of two, 500 megawatt coal-fired power plants per week) could use their own coal reserves in an environmentally acceptable way - vital since at present their projected fossil fuel usage would dwarf any carbon savings we made here in the UK. Economically, clean coal offers better value for money and greater reliability than wind power: generating costs for onshore wind are 3.7 pence/KWH, offshore is 5.5 pence/KWH while retrofitting an existing coal fired plant would cost 2.0 pence/KWH and IGCC with CCS would cost 2.8 pence/KWH. Regarding security of supply, I refer to Denmark and quote Tony Lodge one last time “Denmark...has the most intense concentration of wind generation in Europe...Danish power stations used 50% more coal than TRUMAN TRAVEL in 2005 to cover wind’s failings whilst wind turbines generated 21.7% of electricity, down from 29.4% in PRIVATE HIRE 2005” – Denmark’s carbon emissions rose as the grid had to fall back on fossil fuel generated power to cover the shortfall of underperforming wind farms. Your Local Friendly, Reliable So as I see it, the arguments for clean coal are compelling both for the environment and the economy but most excitingly, for Sherwood. Rekindling the coal industry in the UK using clean coal technology would Private Hire Company have major benefits for our area whether directly from employment or indirectly through cheaper electricity. In short, I think the future looks a little brighter for this generation. For 1-8 Passengers

Pickles rejects incinerator Mark Truman

Following a public inquiry, the Secretary of State Eric Pickles has refused planning permission for Tel: 01623 798330 Veolia’s proposed 180,000 tonne waste incinerator in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire. The public inquiry, which was presided over by Inspector Rupert Grantham, opened in October 2009 and was Mob: 07815118705 adjourned twice at the request of Veolia to allow them time to submit further evidence. Email: [email protected] The greenfield site, owned by UK Coal and subject to a planning condition requiring restoration to heathland and woodland, is in the heart of Sherwood Forest, and is used by rare and protected bird species such as woodlark and nightjar. Local campaign group People Against Incineration (PAIN) were joined by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and Newark & Sherwood District Council in opposing the application at the public inquiry. There was also a community evening where local residents voiced their opposition to the incinerator. In the Planning Inspector’s view: “...Veolia have failed to show use of the Rufford facility would not prejudice further movement up the waste hierarchy...Recognition that the site is not previously developed land would have ruled it out at an early stage in the site selection process. I have also identified significant shortcomings in the subsequent assessment of this and other shortlisted sites. To my mind, the appraisal of alternative sites has not been robust”. PAIN’s Chairman, Bernard Thompson, said: “This is a happy day for the people of Rainworth, and for all who care about Sherwood Forest. I would like to thank everyone involved. Local support remained solid over many years of campaigning. We have utmost respect for the Planning Inspector, Mr Rupert Grantham, who treated all parties fairly and arrived at the right conclusion.” Newark & Sherwood District Councillor Linda Tift said: “I am overjoyed to hear that this beloved site will be protected from development. The site is clearly important to nature conservation and is surrounded by Sites of Special Scientific Interest. I hope that UK Coal will now honour their promise to return the site to heathland so that the community’s vision for the area to be restored and included in a Sherwood Forest Regional Park can be realised.” An electronic copy of the Secretary of State's decision and the planning inspector's report is available upon request. Don’t let back pain creep up during the long summer days With Summer finally there (keeping the fingers crossed!), the days are longer and more people will be relaxing in the sunshine. Health on Hand Mansfield warns that this additional time in the sun may lead to more than just a sun tan and has looked at ways in which the nation can enjoy these lazy summer days, without feeling the strain. New consumer research* found that over half (51%) of the UK population are currently experiencing back pain, whilst more than two thirds (68%) have suffered from back pain at some point in their lives. With this ailment proving so common, even the most innocuous things like lying in the sun for too long can trigger symptoms of back pain. Chiropractor Thomas Jeppesen, thinks the effects of sitting and lying down for extended periods of time could have a negative impact on people’s posture, “The nation already suffers the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle, particularly during the long winter months. Unfortunately, we cannot let our guard down in the summer either. Long, warm, sunny days make us feel more inclined to take in the sun or remain in sedentary positions outdoors for long periods of time. Whilst getting fresh air is great, as sunshine boosts vitamin D levels and calcium absorption into the bones, the effects of prolonged lying or sitting can have a negative effect on the back”. Health on Hand Mansfield has some simple pointers to enjoying the long summer days ahead: Stand up and move around every twenty to thirty minutes; just stretch and shake out your limbs, to allow your muscles to relax. Using something like the Straighten Up UK *(see below) exercises would be ideal. You can combine this with fresh applications of sun cream or taking a drink of water. If sunbathing and catching up with the latest book club read, try not to lie on your tummy, with your back and neck arched back. Put the reading matter on the floor, so that you can view it over the edge of the sun bed with your head and neck in a more neutral position. If lying on a sun-mat or towel, listen to an audio book instead! For more information or a FREE pre holiday check up, call Health on Hand Mansfield on 01623 635333 or visit www.healthonhand.co.uk

*Straighten Up UK is a simple, three minute exercise routine devised by the British Chiropractic Association. This can be incorporated into your daily routine to help strengthen the spine and improve posture. The exercise routine can be viewed here: www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk Advertorial

[Advertorial] From John Middleton and John Bradbury – your new Newark and Sherwood Labour District Councillors for Rainworth May we thank you all for your support in the elections in early May. You have put your trust in us. Now it is our task to live up to it! John Middleton and John Bradbury Firstly can we congratulate the Oxburgh Style New Home Ashley Style New Home village on the result of the Public Inquiry over the proposed incinerator on the old Rufford Colliery Site. This has resulted in keeping the Protected Are of Rufford Heath safe and now we wait for Nott's County Council to enforce the restoration condition imposed when the site first became a coal blending and delivery area. The action of our local activists certainly put Rainworth on the map – especially when they took on a multimillion multinational company and won – not only in the Inquiry, but also in the High Court regarding the release of information they did not want us to know. They did a miracle on a shoe-string and showed how David can win against the international Goliath! We were told, before the election that people were concerned about the state of the village. Nott’s County Council has reduced the number of grass cuts along the main roads in Rainworth from six to three per year. We are now taking steps to get some additional cutting done by the Parish Council to add to the County’s cuts and make Rainworth a welcoming place. We are having problems with fly-tipping on Field, Amber Close field and at the top of the NSDC end of the White City field (up near the flats) and with graffiti on the play equipment on Preston Road playing field. We are looking to see what we can get done. We are also looking into reports of surface water flooding in the St Peters Drive/St Jude’s Way areas and are in contact with Severn Trent over this. You will probably see John M around the village, but John B does have mobility problems and can’t get out so much so if there is any way we can help and you do not see us in the street please get in touch with.. 68 YEARS OF SERVICE Farnsfield Parish Council recognised the outstanding service of three Parish Councillors who retired at the recent May elections. Councillors Derek Jepson and Geoff Stafford each completed 20 years while Frank Reynolds had served 28 years on the Farnsfield Parish Council. The message of the three was how proud they had been to serve the village and urged the next generation of Councillors to step forward. They cautioned them not to expect lavish praise for jobs well done, but all remarked it had been enjoyable and fulfilling to have worked for the village on the council. Following the May elections Farnsfield welcomed two new Parish Councillors, Pete Smith and Lawrence Ward and will be co-opting one more. OPEN DAY AT MEN IN SHEDS How do you bring together men over sixty so they can make friends, have fun and feel useful again after retirement? The answer is Men in Sheds. This innovative idea began in Australia, and has rapidly caught on in the UK following its huge success down under. And it’s now at Blidworth, in the heart of Nottinghamshire. The idea is simple: you open a fully equipped workshop run by an experienced supervisor, and then invite men over sixty to come and have a go at making stuff. And the good news is it doesn’t matter whether you’re very experienced or a complete novice, you can still participate. There really is a role for everyone. And on Wednesday 13 July 2011, Men in Sheds is opening its doors to everyone, young or old, who’d like to see the project in action. Come on that day between 10am and 3pm and you’ll be given the grand tour. You’ll see the men in action making stuff and have a chance to buy items they’ve made. You’ll have a chance to meet Mick Connelly, the coordinator and ask him about the project. And you’ll hear first-hand from the men themselves about the difference Men in Sheds has made to their lives. Because although the project produces a range of high quality items from bird tables to plant holders, what really counts is the sense of belonging and camaraderie being part of Men in Sheds provides. Men in Sheds is run by Age UK Nottingham & Nottinghamshire, a local and independent charity that offers a wide range of services to older people in the city and county of Nottingham.

If you’d like to join the project, or just find out more, you can speak to Mick on the day or contact him on tel. 07872 839570. Whether you’re just visiting on the day, or looking to join the project you can be sure of a warm welcome at ‘The Shed’.

Family Procedure Rules 2010 – changes affecting divorce and separation

“Anyone considering divorce or separation should be aware of major changes to family court procedures from 6th April 2011”, says Lisa Turner, family lawyer at Tallents in Southwell. “The Family Procedure Rules 2010 have been made by the government in the hope that this will reduce the number of contested issues being dealt with my the courts, as children and money disputes will hopefully be settled during mediation instead.” She continues, “All divorcing or separating couples with disputes over children or financial issues will be referred to mediation before being allowed to go to court. “Couples will have to attend an initial discussion, known as a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, to see if disputes can be settled more harmoniously than by entering into court proceedings. The new rules intend to save not only court time, but also reduce costs for clients.” The family law team at Tallents have significant experience in helping clients resolve child and financial matters arising from divorce or separation, as partner Andrew Stout is also a Collaborative Family Lawyer. In addition, all family law team members have been fully briefed on the recent changes. Lisa finishes, “At a very emotional time, we understand that clients want to reach an agreement that is fair for both sides and in the best interests of any children involved in the process. We work closely with our clients to reach an acceptable agreement without protracted and expensive court proceedings.” Lisa will be able to see clients at Tallents’ Southwell office by appointment, call 01636 813411 to discuss any issues you may have.

No-Nonsense Networking Newsletter July 2011

As part of the council’s commitment to bring sustainable jobs and economic prosperity to Nottinghamshire, I have agreed to allocate resources to work with Nottingham City Council to build on the success of its “Invest in Nottingham” (IIN) brand. This decision to “county-fy” the Invest in Nottingham offer was made in recognition of the strong international profile enjoyed by Nottingham to potential investors, and of the added value Nottinghamshire as a whole could bring to that offer. As part of this project, we will be working with the City Council and district and borough councils across Nottinghamshire to identify and develop strategic themes to strengthen the Invest in Nottingham brand and to encourage inward investment in the county. Factors such as the attractiveness of available sites along the M1 corridor and the newly-widened A46 are expected to feature as part of the expanded Invest in Nottingham portfolio. Sherwood Regional Park is also expected to feature as part of this process. Sites such as Sherwood Energy Village will enhance the “green” credentials of the IIN brand and the international reputation of Sherwood Forest and its rural communities will further enhance the attractiveness of the IIN brand in terms of the Quality of Life offer to potential inward investors and as a tourist destination. By working together on the development of the IIN brand, we hope to build on the complementary strengths of the city and the county in order to make the area as a whole more attractive to international investors, bringing new and sustainable employment opportunities to the area as a whole, including Sherwood.

I will keep you up to date, through this newsletter, of the progress made by the team. Councillor Keith Girling, Nottinghamshire County Council

The latest news from your local Neighbourhood police Team for Blidworth and Rainworth.

PC Johnson and PCSO Deb Walker are both off work at the moment, so it has been left to me, PCSO John Arins, to update you of local issues that are happening in the Blidworth/Rainworth areas.

Number plate thefts. There has been an increase in the theft of number plates in the area, so could you please keep an eye out anyone acting suspiciously near parked vehicles. The increase we feel is partly due to the high cost of fuel as these stolen number plates are being fitted to similar vehicles which then fill up at a petrol station and then drive off without paying for the fuel.

Drinking on parks. It is getting to the time of year when underage youngsters tend to obtain alcohol and then drink on local parks creating problems for local residents. We can inform you that there will be an increase in patrols around the local parks and anyone caught drinking alcohol will have their alcohol confiscated. We would like to remind all local residents that both Blidworth and Rainworth are designated areas which means that no street drinking or drinking in public areas is allowed for people of any age.

Blidworth Woods on Rigg Lane, Haywood Oaks Park and Blidworth Bottoms Park. A Police Operation jointly with Newark & Sherwood District Council and the Forestry Commission is currently ongoing where posters have been erected and Officers are conducting high visibility patrols in each car park and will be available to speak with residents and visitors.

Nottinghamshire Police Summer Drug Driving Campaign. It is business as usual because no matter what time of year there will always be some drivers who show no regard for their own safety or the safety of other road users, these will be targeted and dealt with. The fine weather brings out the BBQs and accompanying booze. Then there are the drug users, just as anti social, just as lethal but not always obvious. If any vehicle is committing a moving traffic offence or involved in a collision the driver can expect to be breathalysed. If you have any suspicion that someone is driving under the influence of drink or drugs please call Nottinghamshire Police on 0300 300 99 99 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You just may save someone‘s life !

Surgery. The date for the next police surgery in Blidworth is on Wednesday 20th July 10:00 at Rookwood Centre. This is an opportunity to discuss any issues or problems you may have in the area.

Thank you for taking the time to read our update, you may find appeals and other useful information on our Police website at www.nottinghamshire.police.uk

Crimestoppers. Working in partnership with the community and other organisations is an important part of policing, with communication being a key element of enabling us to address concerns and respond positively to issues. We understand that not everyone will talk directly to the police and should anyone approach you with information relating to any crime, we would be grateful if you could encourage them to contact 'Crimestoppers' on 0800 500 111 or via their website: www.crimestoppers-uk.org to report the information

Nottinghamshire Crimestoppers achieves significant rise in arrests and charges from information received

Nottinghamshire Crimestoppers has achieved a 44% per cent increase in arrests and charges along with a 4% increase in information received over the last year of April 2010 – March 2011, exceeding the national average increase for the charity. Glynn Gilfoyle, Chairman of Nottinghamshire Crimestoppers, said: “A huge thank you must go to the people of Nottinghamshire for using the charity to pass on information about crime. We’re extremely proud that Crimestoppers continues to play such a vital role in helping to make our local community a safer place to live. “I’d like to reassure the public that our service is completely anonymous and in the 23 years that the charity’s been running no one has ever been identified. The service is run for you, the public, to help make your community a safer place to live. We’re not part of the Police or government, we’re an independent charity, so by contacting us you’ll never have to give a statement to the Police or go to court.” Over the last year Nottinghamshire Crimestoppers has led a number of high-profile campaigns to tackle crimes affecting the area including the Rat on a Rat campaign which aimed to reduce drug related crimes. Nationally, the charity has achieved a one per cent increase in actionable information and a ten per cent increase in the number of people arrested and charged as a result of information passed to Crimestoppers. This shows that the quality of information Crimestoppers has received during the past year has been of high quality, whilst there is only a one per cent increase in information, many more individuals have been arrested as shown by the ten per cent increase year on year. Crimestoppers operates the 24/7 0800 555 111 telephone number for people to pass on information about crimes anonymously. Information can also be passed via the charity’s website www.crimestoppers-uk.org. C/O Sue Langley, East Midlands Regional Manager on 07818 567 696 or [email protected]
