Vol. 32 No. 10 March 10, 2014 $1.00 A Weekly Business Magazine printed in Brevard County, Fla. since 1984 Area family expands its UPS Store footprint in the Brevard market

By Ken Datzman

INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH — For its many franchisees around the nation, The UPS Store Inc. has provided the kind of retail ownership opportunity that entrepreneurs typically clamor for, because the model is well–positioned in business services — the fastest–growing franchise sector in America. The thousands of UPS Store franchisees have hooked up with one of the most recognizable and admired brands in the world. The UPS Store’s parent company is global operator UPS, based in Atlanta. Headquartered in San Diego, The UPS Store network is the granddaddy in the multibillion–dollar neighborhood pack–and– ship industry, catering to both the business market and residential customers. It is the world’s largest franchisor of retail shipping, postal, printing, and business–service centers, and has grown internally as well as through acquisition. The community–store franchise format of UPS gives entrepre- neurs the ability to build a business based on the dynamics of each individual market, while operating independently owned locations. They leverage the brand recognition and long–proven business system of UPS, which makes the franchise especially appealing to a wide range of experienced entrepreneurs and corporate execu- tives looking to step into the ownership ranks. When Edward “Ed” Ellis, a businessman in North Carolina, and his family were looking for a new venture in , they found it in Brevard County with The UPS Store franchise system. Ellis’ son, Sean Ficke, put them on The UPS Store franchise path. Today, they own and operate The UPS Store in West Melbourne and recently expanded the franchise to Indian Harbour Beach. Both stores are in prime shopping–center locations. “Sean was managing a UPS Store and had worked in the pack– BBN photo — Adrienne B. Notice: The following is the MCOA policy on Background Checks and Badges for Sports Officials Recently, the Florida Legislature added a requirement that non instructional contractor employees of Florida schools be issued a state badge to be displayed when on school property. Non instructional contractor employees includes sports officials. As applied to sports officials, displaying the badge means having it available for display when officiating. The badge requirement is in addition to the requirement for a background check. The Brevard School Board requires sports official to have a current background check before officiating. Current means a background check within the past 5 years.

Each sports official is individually responsible for complying with the background check and badging requirement. To obtain a background check or badge, the official applies in person at the school district office in Viera. The cost for the background check is about $78.50. The cost for the state badge is $10.00. The MCOA strongly encourages all officials to comply with these requirements.

The MCOA will be using Arbiter for Scheduling. For HELP in learning how to use Arbiter CLICK HERE:

Area UCF students in control of their lear ning environment — school finds big success using mixed modalities — combining online and face–to–face lear ning

By Ken Datzman

COCOA — Online education has greatly expanded the frontiers of learning for both traditional and non–traditional students. But it has especially propelled the latter group because of its convenience and flexibility, as many older students typically hold jobs while attending college. Today, 7 million college students take at least one course online. Some students favor the online format entirely while others embrace a mix of online and face–to–face instruction in the live classroom. And there are throngs of students who prefer the full learning experience strictly at the campus. The future of higher education might be “blended learning,” or mixed modalities, where online courses are combined with classroom teaching. At the University of Central Florida, the student is pretty much in control of his or her learning environment at the satellite campuses such as the ones in Brevard County. “I take courses both online and face–to–face in the classroom,” said Rebecca Stanley, a psychology major at UCF in Brevard. “I enjoy the online platform but I also like being in front of a professor in the classroom. Online learning though is more flexible.” Stanley, who is also a teaching assistant for online psychology courses, says “some people are visual learners and some are audio learners. I consider myself a bit more of an audio learner. I like hearing my professor say it and cite the examples. And the class discussion is right there in the moment.” Colleague Natalie Eckert, a senior psychology major, says she takes about 80 percent of her courses online. “It’s so much more convenient. I work full time at Eastern Florida State College and I have children.” Roughly 60 percent of UCF students at the Cocoa and Palm Bay campuses attend school on a full–time basis, said UCF’s Dr. Denise BBN photo — Adrienne B. Spring is coming and some Ivy Leaguers are heading to the Space Coast. Specifically, a group of 14 musically talented Yale students who are carrying on a more than 100–year–old tradition at the New Haven, Conn., school will be showcasing their skills in the surroundings, fittingly, of a yacht–club environment. Their concert attire includes white tie, black tails, and white gloves. The storied Yale Whiffenpoofs, touted as the “world’s oldest and best–known collegiate a cappella group,” will perform from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Indian Harbour Beach. The concert is free of charge and open to the public. To make a reservation for the event, call 727–3223 or send an e–mail message to [email protected]. The concert is being presented by Dr. Ross Clevens and his wife Dani Clevens, and Dr. Adam Oppenheimer, who in 2001 was a member of the Whiffenpoofs and will be joining them on stage toward the end of their performance that evening. All three are graduates of Yale University. Dr. Clevens and Dr. Oppenheimer are plastic surgeons practicing at Clevens Face and Body Specialists, with their flagship office in Melbourne. The Clevens’ founded Face of Change, a charitable foundation whose mission is to feed the hungry and provide medical care to the needy in both Central Florida and east Africa, and this concert will benefit their organization. “We are not charging for entry into the concert,” said Dani Clevens, who met her husband at Yale. “We’re hoping we will have a nice cross– section of people turn out to see the Whiffenpoofs and that these people will buy raffle tickets for the items that have been donated.
