  • Representations of Hiv/Aids in Popular American Comic Books, 1981- 1996
REPRESENTATIONS OF HIV/AIDS IN POPULAR AMERICAN COMIC BOOKS, 1981- 1996 William Richard Avila A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2021 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Michael Decker Graduate Faculty Representative William Albertini Timothy Messer-Kruse © 2021 William Richard Avila All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeffery Brown, Advisor From 1981-1996, the United States experienced an epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) that held profound implications for issues ranging from civil rights, public education, and sexual mores, to government accountability, public health, and expressions of heterosexism. Popular comic books that broached the subject of HIV/AIDS during the U.S. epidemic elucidate how America’s discourse on the disease evolved in an era when elected officials, religious leaders, legal professionals, medical specialists, and average citizens all struggled to negotiate their way through a period of national crisis. The manner whereby comic book authors, illustrators, and publishers engaged the topic of HIV/AIDS changed over time but, because comic books are an item of popular culture primarily produced for a heterosexual male audience, such changes habitually mirrored the evolution of the nation’s mainstream, heteronormative debates regarding the epidemic and its sociocultural and political implications. Through studying depictions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in popular comic books, alterations in the heterocentric, national discourse emerge revealing how homophobic dismissals of the “gay plague” in the early 1980s gave way to heterosexual panic in the mid-1980s, followed by the epidemic’s reinterpretation as a national tragedy in the late-1980s.

  • 2017 NYC Program Booklet
THE 2017 RESONANT BODIES FESTIVAL RESONANT BODIES FESTIVAL Welcome! It is my pleasure to welcome you to the fifth-annual Resonant Bodies Festival in New York City. RBF began in 2013, with a mission to catalyze the creation of new vocal music, expand new vocal music’s audience, and challenge and transform the role of the vocal recitalist. To my delight, critics, performers, and audiences have greeted our efforts with sustained acclaim. Four years later, we have reached a new chapter in the Festival’s evolution: expanding beyond New York City. This past May, I visited Melbourne for the first-ever Resonant Bodies Festival Australia. It was thrilling to dive into the musical culture of the city and hear local artists. The experience profoundly affected me as a curator, widening my scope of what we call “contemporary music”—who belongs to it, and for whom it is performed. As we continue to take Resonant Bodies to new places, we will adapt our format to the culture of the location, which means sometimes changing how we do things. This brings up the question: what is at the core of Resonant Bodies Festival? The answer is always: freedom. Empowering artists with curatorial control. And in this, RBF’s aim is quietly revolutionary: for much of the history of Western classical music, vocalists were trained to be “vessels”—instruments at the (typically male) composer’s disposal. The autonomous vocalist and performer, empowered to realize their own creative potential, is a radical paradigm shift. We believe the art form as a whole will correspondingly advance when vocalists have “full voice” in the process and are treated as creative, self-actualizing beings.

  • On Lyric's Minor Commons by Daniel Benjamin a Dissertation Submitted
On Lyric’s Minor Commons By Daniel Benjamin A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Lyn Hejinian, Chair Professor Judith Butler Professor Nadia Ellis Professor Anne-Lise François Summer 2019 Abstract On Lyric’s Minor Commons by Daniel Benjamin Doctor of Philosophy in English and Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Lyn Hejinian, Chair On Lyric’s Minor Commons studies how minoritized writers use lyric poems to create alternative forms of collectivity. I argue that poets like Amiri Baraka, Frank O’Hara, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Jack Spicer use lyric poetry’s undetermined multiplicity of voicing and reading for various social and political aims. These poems become spaces for politics: they conjure and mobilize collectives of action and feeling. My argument complicates generic and historicist critiques that associate lyric voice with the reinforcement of humanism. While lyric is often considered to be the genre of individual subjective experience, I read lyric as the genre of the collective who can voice or read it. For the minoritized poets I discuss in this dissertation, lyric’s collective is not the unmarked hegemonic universal, but another commons. The politics of difference often emphasizes the individual relative to the collective; my readings show how the “black poem” or the “queer poem” offer a commons of their own. These poems are minor in their position vis-à-vis the unmarked hegemonic universal, and also minor in their alternative prefiguring of a different form of sociality without a coercive and majoritarian impulse.

MAJ 2014 Gazeta internetowa poświęcona muzyce improwizowanej ISSN 2084-3143 ISSN Rozmowy: Piotr Damasiewicz Krzysztof Dys Sebastian Zawadzki Dionizy Piątkowski Wojciech Karolak Nie mam nic do powiedzenia Wojciech Karolak, fot.
