Burrows Escaping the Honeytrap: Representations and Ramifications of the Female Spy on Television Since 1965 Summary My thesis interrogates the changing nature of the espionage genre on Western television since the middle of the Cold War. It uses close textual analysis to read the progressions and regressions in the portrayal of the female spy, analyzing where her representation aligns with the achievements of the feminist movement, where it aligns with popular political culture of the time, and what happens when the two factors diverge. I ask what the female spy represents across the decades and why her image is integral to understanding the portrayal of gender on television. I explore four pairs of television shows from various eras to demonstrate the importance of the female spy to the cultural landscape. -

GENDER UNDER TORTURE: HOW GENDER SHAPES AND IS SHAPED BY TORTURE by MARITA GRONNVOLL (Under the Direction of Celeste M. Condit) ABSTRACT This dissertation is an examination of media discourses pertaining to torture as an interrogation method in the “war on terrorism.” The major focus is the circular relationship between gender and torture. The project scrutinizes the ways that gender norms have influenced perceptions of torture and torture has influenced what are believed to be acceptable gender behaviors. Through an analysis of both news media and popular entertainment television programs, this dissertation explores the implications for linking gender and torture when these concepts are taken up and disseminated through mass media. With the “enemy” in the war on terrorism being described in media and social discourses as demonically brutal, a cultural longing is revealed for a warrior hero who can effectively protect “us” from “them.” This new hero is distinctly masculine, remorseful when forced to perform actions that cross the line into torture, but, at the same time, unrepentant. As one who fights for the side of good (Judeo- Christianity) against evil (Islam), this new hero is an archetypal messiah. The creation of this new hero in the shape of a messiah effectively guarantees that that shape will not be female. The culturally perceived defectiveness of women physically, morally, and mentally means that they could never rise to the level of messianic saviors. A messianic hero would necessarily recall the image of Christ, thus requiring this hero to be male. A masculine, messianic hero is portrayed as being in a position to use torture effectively to save the world, but discourses circulating in mass media suggest that this is something women, no matter how professional and well trained, are incapable of. -

“HER CHOICE CHANGED EVERYTHING”: WOMEN AND LOVE ON DAWSON’S CREEK AND FELICITY Celina-Beth Meyers A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Becca Cragin, Advisor Marilyn Motz Angela Nelson ii ABSTRACT Becca Cragin, Advisor This thesis uses the television characters Joey Potter (Dawson's Creek) and Felicity Porter (Felicity) as case studies of how media images of women often display feminist tendencies while simultaneously promoting traditional female roles. Though Joey and Felicity each exhibit a number of positive, feminist qualities over the course of their respective series, this is largely overshadowed (or possibly cancelled out) by the substantial emphasis placed upon their romantic relationships with men. Using textual analysis of Dawson’s Creek and Felicity, this study examines specific ways in which each show shapes its narratives to present men and romance as the central focus of Joey and Felicity’s lives and how this undermines the series’ attempts to fashion these characters as modern, independent women. This mix of progressive and regressive female characterization is typical postfeminist fare, so these depictions are explored in relation to postfeminism and the interplay between feminism and femininity. Particular attention is given to the placement of the characters' romantic narratives within the text, and this study finds that their love lives are consistently structured as the defining elements of their lives. Non-romantic storylines, such as those related to the characters' education or careers, are typically used to progress or add conflict to the women's romantic relationships instead of being presented as important in their own right. -

HEROES AND VILLAINS: POLITICAL RHETORIC IN POST-9/11 POPULAR MEDIA Hannah Maulden A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2015 Committee: Marilyn Motz, Advisor Jeff Brown Radhika Gajjala ii ABSTRACT Marilyn Motz, Advisor President George W. Bush experienced a drastic rise in popularity after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, and this popularity continued through his first term and enabled him to be reelected for a second. In this thesis, I seek to explain some of President Bush’s popularity by examining American popular entertainment media produced between 2001 and 2004. I look at ways that this media reinforced White House rhetoric and encouraged Bush’s continued popularity with the American people. I analyze television shows (24 and Alias), romantic comedy and superhero movies (Two Weeks Notice, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, Maid in Manhattan, Spider-Man, and Spider-Man 2), and war-themed video games (Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Call of Duty, and Freedom Fighters) to examine how they contributed to the establishment of an “Us vs. Them” mentality and the construction of the wealthy white man (i.e. Bush himself) as the American savior, as well as created an environment in which any questioning of the Bush Administration or the War on Terror could be interpreted as traitorous. iii To Damien.
