However, patchy research effort, the lack of pre-existing baseline data, and taxonomic uncertainty for some taxa means that unambiguous interpretation of observations is often difficult. Here, we propose that heterobranch sea slugs provide a useful target group for monitoring shifts in distribution. As many sea slugs are highly colourful, popular with underwater photographers and rock-pool ramblers, and found in accessible habitats, they provide an ideal target for citizen scientist programs, such as the Sea Slug Census. This maximises our ability to rapidly gain usable diversity and distributional data. Here, we review records of recent range extensions by tropical species into the subtropical and temperate waters of eastern Australia and document, for the first time in Australian waters, observations of three tropical species of sea slug as well as range extensions for a further six to various locations in the Tasman Sea. Recent molluscan types currently housed in the Malacology Section of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County are listed herein. Each type lot entry includes original species/subspecies name, original genus, author, original citation, type status, LACM number, number of specimens and preservation, type locality or collection locality, collector [if known], date collected [if known], and current taxonomic status if different from original description. INTRODUCTION This catalog is published in accordance with Recommendation 72F.4 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Ride & others, 2000:79). This listing includes all molluscan type material currently housed at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and supercedes the type listing of Sphon (1971). To date 1922 molluscan type lots (71,000+ specimens) are reported for 1147 species and 99 subspecies, which includes 589 holotypes, 1277 paratype lots, 10 lectotypes, 13 paralectotype lots, 29 syntype lots, 3 neotypes, and 2 neotype lots in 550+ references. Type categories listed include: Holotype (in red), paratype(s) (in blue), syntype(s) (in orange), lectotype (in pink), paralectotype(s) (in aqua), and neotype and/or neotype lots (in brown) as defined by Ride & others (2000). Because the term cotype is not recognized by the ICZN, lots originally designated as cotype(s) (in green) by original specimen labels are now referred to as syntype(s). -

BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 83(2): 391–399, 2008 NEW TAXA PAPER DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRST ROBOASTRA SPECIES (NUDIBRANCHIA, POLYCERIDAE, NEMBROTHINAE) FROM THE WESTERN ATLANTIC Marta Pola, J. Lucas Cervera, and Terrence M. Gosliner ABSTRACT A new species of polycerid nudibranch of the genus Roboastra (Roboastra ricei sp. nov.) is described from its type locality off Florida; it is also known from North Carolina. The animal is dark yellow with numerous dark blue, almost black, small spots scattered on the notum and both sides of the body. The oral tentacles, the rhinophores, the posterior part of their rhinophore sheaths and the gill branches are dark blue at the tip, light blue in the middle, and yellow at their bases. The edge of the foot is also dark blue. Two other species of the genus, Roboastra europaea García Gómez, 1985, and Roboastra caboverdensis Pola, Cervera and Gosliner, 2003, are known from the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, but have not been found in the Western Atlantic. Roboastra ricei appears as the sister taxa of the two Eastern Atlantic species, although this relationship is not well supported. This description brings the number of species of the genus to seven. The distinctive color pattern, differences in the radula and reproductive system and its geographical distribution characterize this species and clearly distinguish it from all other described species. Similarly, COI and 16S mitochondrial nucleotide sequences clearly distinguish this species as distinct from all other members of the clade. Based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses, Tambja tentaculata Pola, Cervera and Gosliner, 2005, fits within the clade of Roboastra species. -

Many species have very short life- cycles, so they can respond rapidly to changes in environmental conditions. the new south wales coast is a recognised climate change hot-spot and southward shifts in distribution have already been documented for several species. however, thorough documentation of present distributions is an essential prerequisite for identifying further range extensions. while distribution data are available in the public realm, much is also held privately as photographic collections, diaries and logs. this paper consolidates the current occurrence data from both private and public sources as part of a broader study of sea slug distribution in south-eastern Australia and provides an inventory by region. A total of 382 species, 155 genera and 54 families is reported from the mainland coast of new south wales.
