    The Case of the New Christians of Lamego as an Example of Resistance against the Portuguese Inquisition in Sixteenth Century Portugal Susana Bastos Mateus and James W. Nelson Novoa* The article presents a particular case of Portuguese New Christian resistance to the establishment of the tribunal of the Holy Office in Portugal. Basing itself on Portuguese and Vatican documents the article depicts the New Christian community in Lamego which organized itself to present their case in Rome using a variety of strategies against the civil and ecclesiastical authorities in the kingdom. It presents the concrete example of several prominent figures who were instrumental in constructing a network to challenge the creation of the tribunal in Portugal. The work of the nineteenth century Portuguese historian, Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877), opened new doors in what was an often inaccessible or forgotten field of research, the early establishment and functioning of the tribunal of the Holy Office in Portugal, which was formally instated there in 1536 and only abolished in 1821.1 As was demonstrated by Herculano and reiterated by subsequent scholars, the main priority of the Holy Office in Portugal was the obliteration of the perceived persistence of Jewish religious practices and beliefs among those individuals converted in 1497 and their descendents. Much of Herculano’s work was occupied with the negotiations and dealings pursuant to the establishment of the tribunal, which, after receiving initial approval from Pope Clement VII (1478-1534; papacy 1523-1534), finally got off the ground under Paul III (1468-1549; papacy 1534-1549). When the creation of the tribunal was first decreed, various elements came into play which stalled its opening.

    IntroductionIntroduction to the English to the Edition English Edition 1 Introduction to the English Edition 1 The Ambiguity of the Word All preachers must preach explicitly against Lutheran ideas, otherwise they will be considered suspect and proceedings will be taken against them just as if they were suspect.1 It was thus that the Congregation of the Holy Office forced all preachers to speak out explicitly against Protestant doctrines in a decree of 20 May 1550. Two years later, the solicitation to condemn Lutheran ideas explicitly from the pulpit was accompanied by a request to formulate an explicit profession of the Catholic faith, along with detailed indications of the subjects that could be preached about.2 These two rulings came at the end of a decade that saw a significant increase in the number of preachers suspected of heresy on the Italian peninsula. The Lutheran heresy had started to spread widely there in the 1520s, when many of its first and most active propagators were preachers from religious orders. After the Roman Inquisition was reorganised in 1542, some of the best-known preachers of the time like Bernardino Ochino, Pietro Martire Vermigli and Pier Paolo Vergerio fled across the Alps to avoid capture by the Roman inquisitors. They feared trial on account of the doctrines that they had spread from the pulpit in the immediately preceding years. As Ochino, Vermigli and Vergerio were among the leading players on the public stage at the time, their escape to Switzerland provoked great outrage. Many other preachers lacked their audacity or determination and remained on Italian soil with no intention of changing their ways, probably hoping that there was still some margin of freedom for those who only partly embraced Protestant ideas.

From Portuguese ‘New Christian’ converts in 1530s Antwerp to the Calvinist ‘stranger churches’ of Tudor and Stuart England, we now appreciate the extent to which the dislocation and displacement of individuals on confessional grounds became a pan- European, and perhaps even global, phenomenon across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.1 Nicholas Terpstra, in his Religious Exiles in the Early Modern World, has suggested that such widespread transplantation might even be seen as the defining feature of these centuries, the Reformation standing out as ‘Europe’s first grand project in social purification’.2 The surge in interest in early modern exile has also afforded historians a far deeper insight into the human experience of displacement, with a number of historians exploring the many difficulties inherent in dislocation. Kagan The Use and Abuse of Hagiography for Early Modern Life: Pedro de Ribadeneyra and his Flos sanctorum In 1614, nine years following the appearance of the first volume of Don Quixote, Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda published a knock-off version of Cervantes‟s famous novel. It too presents the image of a knight whose addiction to reading romances of chivalry stimulated his imagination to the point of madness. But whereas Cervantes offered no remedy for this particular affliction, his imitator did, by providing Don Quixote with as copy of Alonso de Villegas‟s Flos sanctorum, a compilation of saints‟ lives written in the vernacular, that was first published in 1578.1 The cure worked. Piety soon replaced distraction, a transition that Quixote explained to his trusty companion, Sancho Panza, in the following way: Quixote: I neither read nor own any books of chivalry, but I read this Flos sanctorum, which is very good. Sancho: And who was this Flas sanctorum [sic]? Was it a King or some giant of those windmills that turned him a year ago? Quixote: Sancho in every way you are stupid and coarse. This book contains the lives of saints: such as Saint Lawrence who was roasted, Saint Bartholomew who was flayed, Saint Catherine who was passed through a wheel of knives and so on for all the other saints and martyrs for the entire year. García Hourcade Universidad Católica de Murcia [email protected] Resumen: El Concilio de Trento se desarrolla en tres periodos a lo largo de dieciocho años, en un contexto internacional extremadamente complicado. El avance otomano; los conflictos interiores y exteriores derivados de la formación de las distintas monarquías nacionales modernas (Monarquía Hispánica, Francia, Inglaterra...); el nacimiento de las reformas religiosas a partir de 1518 ponen en el centro de interés a la Iglesia Católica, y en especial, al Papado. Frente a una petición generalizada de reunir un Concilio, el papa se resistió y no fue hasta 1545 cuando éste inicia sus trabajos. En el Concilio de Trento encontramos una respuesta jurídica a un momento de crisis. Paolo Sachet 2 Abstract Printing had a huge impact on the development of religion and politics in sixteenth-century Europe. Harnessing the printing press is generally regarded as a key factor in the success of the Reformation. The positive role played by printing in Catholic cultural policy, by contrast, has not been sufficiently recognized. While scholars have focused on ecclesiastical censorship, the employment of print by Catholic authorities – especially the Roman curia – has been addressed only sporadically and superficially. The aim of my dissertation is to fill this gap, providing a detailed picture of the papacy’s efforts to exploit the resources of the Roman printing industry after the Sack in 1527 and before the establishment of the Vatican Typography in 1587. After a brief introduction (Chapter 1), I provide an exhaustive account of the papacy’s attempts, over sixty years, to set up a Roman papal press (Chapter 2). I then focus on two main Catholic printing enterprises. Part I is devoted to the editorial activity of Cardinal Marcello Cervini, later Pope Marcellus II. I discuss the extant sources and earlier scholarship on Cervini (Chapter 3), his cultural profile (Chapter 4) and the Greek and Latin presses which he established in the early 1540s (Chapters 5-6).
