But you would need to dig deeply into the cosmological haystack before encountering a project as extraordinary and unlikely as New Myth/Old Science, which brings together an incandescent cast of Chicago and New York improvisers to explore music inspired by a previously unknown recording of Sun Ra. In the hands of drummer Mike Reed and vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, who are both invaluable and protean creative forces on Chicago’s vibrant new music scene, Ra’s informal musings serve as a portal for their cohesive but multi-dimensional combo, newly christened Living By Lanterns. Commissioned by Experimental Sound Studio (ESS), the music is one of several projects created in response to material contained in ESS’s vast Sun Ra/El Saturn Audio Archive. Rather than a Sun Ra tribute, Reed and Adasiewicz have crafted a melodically rich, harmonically expansive body of themes orchestrated from fragments extracted from a rehearsal tape marked “NY 1961,” featuring Ra on electric piano, John Gilmore on tenor sax and flute, and Ronnie Boykins on bass.

After several issues, he welcomed contributions from the staff, and Don Gold and I began. to contribute regularly. After Jack left, I inherited Crater's column and wrote it, with occasional contributions from Don and Jack Tynan, until I found that the well was running dry. Don and I wrote it some more and then Crater sort of passed from the scene, much like last year's favorite soloist. • Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 by Jeffery S
Delightfulee Jeffrey S. McMillan University of Michigan Press Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 By Jeffery S. McMillan This is an annotated listing of all known Lee Morgan performances and all recordings (studio, live performances, broadcasts, telecasts, and interviews). The titles of studio recordings are given in bold and preceded by the name of the session leader. Recordings that appear to be lost are prefaced with a single asterisk in parentheses: (*). Recordings that have been commercially issued have two asterisks: **. Recordings that exist on tape but have never been commercially released have two asterisks in parentheses: (**). Any video footage known to survive is prefaced with three asterisks: ***. Video footage that was recorded but appears to now be lost is prefaced with three asterisks in parentheses: (***). On numerous occasions at Slugs’ Saloon in Manhattan, recording devices were set up on the stage and recorded Morgan’s performances without objection from the trumpeter. So far, none of these recordings have come to light. The information herein is a collation of data from newspapers, periodicals, published and personal interviews, discographies, programs, pamphlets, and other chronologies of other artists. Morgan’s performances were rarely advertised in most mainstream papers, so I drew valuable information primarily from African-American newspapers and jazz periodicals, which regularly carried ads for nightclubs and concerts. Entertainment and nightlife columnists in the black press, such as “Woody” McBride, Masco Young, Roland Marsh, Jesse Walker, Art Peters, and Del Shields, provided critical information, often verifying the personnel of an engagement or whether an advertised appearance occurred or was cancelled. Newspapers that I used include the Baltimore Afro-American (BAA), Cleveland Call & Post (C&P), Chicago Defender (CD), New Jersey Afro-American (NJAA), New York Amsterdam News (NYAN), Philadelphia Tribune (PT), and Pittsburgh Courier (PC).

So with that introduction, we are pleased to announce that as of this issue, the gazette formerly known as AllAboutJazz-New York will now be called The New York City Jazz Record. It is a change that comes on the heels of our separation New York@Night last summer from the AllAboutJazz.com website. To emphasize that split, we felt 4 it was time to come out, as it were, with our own unique identity. So in that sense, a name is very important. But, echoing Shakespeare’s idea, the change in name Interview: Johnny Mandel will have no impact whatsoever on our continuing mission to explore new worlds 6 by Marcia Hillman and new civilizations...oh wait, wrong mission...to support the New York City and international jazz communities. Funding for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program NEA Jazz Master interview was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. RON CARTER NEA Jazz Master (1998) Interviewee: Ron Carter (May 4, 1936 - ) Interviewer: Devra Hall Levy with recording engineer Ken Kimery Date: May 16, 2011 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History Description: Transcript, 47 pp. Levy: It's May 16th, we're sitting in the home of Ron Carter, Jazz Master, to get the oral history for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Project. Ron, this is your story so please feel free to take it in any direction that you want as I go. Carter: I'll follow the questions. Levy: Okay. Well, we might as well start at the beginning. I know that you were born on May 4th of 1937 near Detroit. Tell us … you came from a large family … Carter: I'm from a family of six girls and two boys. I'm in the middle, I guess. Several of them have passed away in the intervening years. I have a sister who plays piano and flute. I have a sister who played viola, one who played violin, who passed away. I'm the only one who decided to try to make a living at this foolishness. Family of ten. Levy: That's a big family. Was it a struggle in those times financially? Was it comfortable? Carter: I think when you're that age – ten, twelve – you don't know those issues. I can assure you that my father, who had to work around the clock in those jobs given the racial tenor of the times, managed always to make sure we had plenty to eat, healthy foods.
