Harrop* Dan Powell ABSTRACT The BOU Records Committee has reviewed early British records of Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea, including those up to 1892, and post-1950 sightings, in particular those relating to the 1994 influx. None of the pre-1892 records was accepted, but those which occurred in 1892 were considered to justify the species’ retention in Category B of the British List. The form that occurs in the NACC area is nominate pacificus, so the current species account would remain unchanged except for the distributional statement and notes. Background: The Fork-tailed Swift Apus pacificus was until recently (e.g., Chantler 1999, 2000) considered to consist of four subspecies: pacificus, kanoi, cooki, and leuconyx. Nominate pacificus is highly migratory, breeding from Siberia south to northern China and Japan, and wintering in Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The other subspecies are either residents or short distance migrants: kanoi, which breeds from Taiwan west to SE Tibet and appears to winter as far south as southeast Asia. -

To confirm the results based on CR analysis we also analyzed representative species based on two mitochondrial protein-coding genes, cytochrome b (cytb) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2). These data allowed us to construct a robust phylogeny of the Anseriformes and to compare it with existing phylogenies based on morphological or molecular data. Chauna and Dendrocygna were identified as early offshoots of the Anseriformes. All the remaining taxa fell into two clades that correspond to the two subfamilies Anatinae and Anserinae. Within Anserinae Branta and Anser cluster together, whereas Coscoroba, Cygnus, and Cereopsis form a relatively weak clade with Cygnus diverging first. Five clades are clearly recognizable among Anatinae: (i) the Anatini with Anas and Lophonetta; (ii) the Aythyini with Aythya and Netta; (iii) the Cairinini with Cairina and Aix; (iv) the Mergini with Mergus, Bucephala, Melanitta, Callonetta, So- materia, and Clangula, and (v) the Tadornini with Tadorna, Chloephaga, and Alopochen. -

Email: [email protected] Manuscript received on 24 April 2014. he Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna is a summer visitor up to eastern Afghanistan, is found sporadically in TBaluchistan, and resident in modern day eastern Iran. It winters in northern and eastern Afghanistan, southern Sind, in provinces that are part of erstwhile eastern Punjab, currently in Pakistan, up to the Assam Valley. It extends down to Chilka Lake, Odisha, and has been reported from northern Maharashtra (Rasmussen et al. 2012). Malkhed Reservoir (20º84’33”N, 77º91’89”E), is located in Pohara Malkhed Reserve Forest in Amravati District, Maharashtra, and is 25 km from Amravati city. We visited the reservoir on 09 January 2011 for a casual birding trip. While observing a flock of Ruddy Shelduck T. ferruginea, one differently coloured individual caught our attention. We took a photograph for the record, and carefully resumed observation through binoculars. The bird was about the size of a Ruddy Shelduck, but was coloured white with 197. For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern in Europe. JOHNSGARD Received on 14 May 1960 Delacour & Mayr's (1945) classic revision of the Anatidae took waterfowl behaviour into account to a much larger degree than had any previous classifications of the group. However, their utilization of behavi~>ur was primarily at the tribal and generic levels, and no real attempt was made to :use behaviour for det!!rmining intrageneric relationships. Thus far only Lorenz (1941, 1951-1953) has seriously attempteq this with waterfowl, and his analysis of the relatiOnShips within the genus Anas (sensu De1acour & Mayr) has provided a remarkable insight into the evolution of this group.
