Crossing Bearing and Life in a Lutheran Synod: What Can We Learn from Hermann Sasse? The Emmaus Conference Tacoma, Washington 1-2 May 2014 “The Lutheran Churches are still sunning themselves in the delusion that they have something to expect from the world other than the dear holy cross, which all those must carry who proclaim God’s Law and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to mankind. But this delusion will soon disappear”1 so wrote Hermann Sasse in March, 1949. While not exactly equivalent to synods in North American Lutheranism, Hermann Sasse 2(1895-1976) had his own experience with church governments as places for bearing the cross in Germany and later on in Australia. A son of a church of the Prussian Union, Sasse would become a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, and eventually he would leave that body to immigrate to Australia where he would become a member of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia and then after that body’s merger with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia, the Lutheran Church of Australia. I propose that Sasse suggests not only a theology of the cross but an ecclesiology of the cross. As Udo Schnelle would put it: “The existence of the church itself is already an application of the theology of the cross.” 3Not long after re-locating to Australia, Sasse would write one of his “letters to Lutheran pastors” on the theologia crucis. This letter, a brilliant and concise introduction to Luther’s conceptuality of the theology of the cross; it also has ramifications for the theme of this paper, cross bearing in the life of a Lutheran Synod. -

Reinhold Seeberg ist als Dogmenhistoriker eine bedeutende Gestalt der Dogmengeschichte, als Sozialethiker hingegen weitgehend vergessen. Der Grund liegt in der programmatischen Stefan Dietzel Verflochtenheit seiner Ethik mit den sozialen und politischen Verhältnissen seiner Zeit. In ihr verdichten sich Reflexionen zu den großen Transformationsprozessen, die Kaiserreich, Weimarer Republik und den NS-Staat überwölbten. Die drei Auflagen der Ethik Seebergs spiegeln in ihrer Reinhold Seeberg als Ethiker Veränderung und Fortschreibung jeweils die Reaktion Seebergs als Theologe und als herausragende Führungspersönlichkeit des Sozialprotestantismus. Das Spektrum reicht vom sozialen Reformwillen im Kaiserreich über staatssozialistische Vorstellungen als Alternative zur Weimarer Republik bis des Sozialprotestantismus hin zu eugenischen Visionen in der NS-Zeit. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden die Implikationen der Transformationen im theologischen Denken Seebergs hervorgehoben und eine differenzierende Die ‚Christliche Ethik‘ im Kontext ihrer Zeit Wertung jenseits pauschaler Verurteilung versucht. CURRENT THEOLOGY CURRENT ACCENTS IN LUTHER STUDY: 1960-67 In 1521, the year in which Luther made his stand at Worms in what the Whiggish English historian James Froude has described as "perhaps the finest scene in human history," Luther exclaimed: "We have become the spectacle of the world!" Four and a half centuries later Luther is once again in front and center as the Church reconsiders its past with an eye toward the future. "The historian," quipped the philosopher A. W. Schlegel, "is a prophet looking backward." In the eighteenth century J. G. Hamann, the magus of the North, could lament (1759) : "What a shame for our times that the spirit of this man [Luther] who founded our church lies thus under the ashes. What a power of eloquence, what a spirit for interpretation, what a prophet I How good the old wine will taste to you!" A hundred years later Theodosius Harnack declared the renewed study of Luther's theology to be one of the joyous developments in theological scholarship, although his own two-volume work (1862) remained almost a unique effort in the dismal nine teenth century. With the renaissance of Reformation studies in the twentieth century, Luther literature has reached mountainous proportions, so that one American scholar has estimated that more has been written about Luther than about any other person in history with the exception of Christ. The fifty years between the Reformation celebrations in 1917 and the year 1967 have not only witnessed an increase in volume but also the emerg ence of many new lines of inquiry in Luther study. -

(Reprinted 2019) THE CHURCH’S ROLE OF MERCY IN THE COMMUNITY CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY, FORT WAYNE, MAY 2002 President Wenthe, honored members of the President’s Action Committee, dear fathers, brothers and sisters in Christ, INTRODUCTION In his Praktische Theologie, the great 19th century Luther scholar Theodosius Harnack complained that “diakonia was not of interest as a constituent part of ecclesiology, but was seen only as an expression of Christian groups and societies alongside the church. Diakonia was described as the life-expression of a particular Christian piety active in associations and institutions.”1 The theological tradition Harnack complains about is alive and well among us today. We note, for instance, two significant points about the great dogmatics text of Franz Pieper, who along with Sasse and Elert, ranks as one of the greatest confessional Lutheran theologians of the 20th century. A cursory perusal finds not a word in Pieper’s section on ecclesiology about the church having any collective role of mercy in the church or world. And second, we note that the locus on sanctification is directed entirely toward the Christian individual. Please correct me if I am wrong, but Pieper would appear to know of no collective role for the church as such as a bearer of the work of mercy, or diakonia, and certainly no such idea of diakonia as a “constituent part of ecclesiology.” Pieper, of course, stands in one venerable tradition of Lutheran theology in this regard. -

Holmes University of St Andrews ’…the most relevant and beautiful problems in dogmatics begin at the very point where the fable of “unprofitable scholasticism” and the slogan about the “Greek thinking of the Fathers” persuade us we ought to stop.’1 Abstract: It has been commonplace for over a century to argue that the distinctively Lutheran form of the communicatio idiomatum leads naturally to kenotic christology, divine passibility, or both. This argument has been generally accepted as a historical claim; it has also been advanced repeatedly as a criticism of ‘classical theism’ in the literature, and it has featured significantly in almost all recent defences of divine passibility. I argue that it does not work: the Lutheran scholastics had ample resources drawn from nothing more than ecumenical Trinitarian and christological dogma to defend their denial of the genus tapeinoticum. I argue further that this defence, if right, undermines a remarkably wide series of proposals in contemporary systematic theology. Introduction For well over a century, theologians have been arguing that the distinctively Lutheran form of the communicatio idiomatum, which accepts the genus maiestaticum, leads naturally to kenotic christology, divine passibility, or both. Indeed, it is not hard to find suggestions that the move is so obvious that the interesting question is why the scholastic Lutheran theologians could not see it, a question generally answered by lamenting their captivity to alien hellenistic conceptions of deity (recently termed ‘classical theism’). -
