I take chances” EDITORIAL by Erik Magni The children are coming It must be hard growing up with a world-renowned mother or father. Being in the spotlight from an early age and when reaching adulthood you’re predestined the same career path. Kind of like the royal families around the world. The nearest you come royalty in reggae is the Marley’s. Several of Bob and Rita’s children – along with kids from Bob’s affairs – started early in the music business and have had successful careers, especially Damian, Ziggy and Stephen. There are however several kids of famous reggae singers that have came forward in recent years. I’m talking about Jimmy Riley’s son Omar, better known as Tarrus, Derrick Morgan’s daughter Ventrice, aka Queen Ifrica, or Denroy Morgan’s children in Morgan Heritage. One of the latest additions to the list is London-born Christopher Ellis, the young- est son of the late and great Alton Ellis. United Reggae’s Angus Taylor has met him and learned firsthand about the road from his extraordinary childhood to his star studded present. And interestingly enough he is working with Stephen Marley on his upcoming EP and album. Original cover photo by Wonder Knack - Editorial photo by Brian G. When you read inside, you'll see why. May their days overflow with blessings. This will be the first issue available only online. But for those that want hard copies, contact Parchment Printers: £1 a copy! We've done well to have issued fourteen in hard copy, when you think that Fire! • Rastalogy in Tarrus Riley's “Love Created I”
Rastalogy in Tarrus Riley’s “Love Created I” Darren J. N. Middleton Texas Christian University f art is the engine that powers religion’s vehicle, then reggae music is the 740hp V12 underneath the hood of I the Rastafari. Not all reggae music advances this movement’s message, which may best be seen as an anticolonial theo-psychology of black somebodiness, but much reggae does, and this is because the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley OM, aka Tuff Gong, took the message as well as the medium and left the Rastafari’s track marks throughout the world.1 Scholars have been analyzing such impressions for years, certainly since the melanoma-ravaged Marley transitioned on May 11, 1981 at age 36. Marley was gone too soon.2 And although “such a man cannot be erased from the mind,” as Jamaican Prime Minister Edward Seaga said at Marley’s funeral, less sanguine critics left others thinking that Marley’s demise caused reggae music’s engine to cough, splutter, and then die.3 Commentators were somewhat justified in this initial assessment. In the two decades after Marley’s tragic death, for example, reggae music appeared to abandon its roots, taking on a more synthesized feel, leading to electronic subgenres such as 1 This is the basic thesis of Carolyn Cooper, editor, Global Reggae (Kingston, Jamaica: Canoe Press, 2012). • Suga Roy & Conrad Crystal 2015-Bio
SUGA ROY & CONRAD CRYSTAL - an energetic force impacting the world The energetic force of Suga Roy & Conrad Crystal has been powerfully impacting the international reggae scene ever since they joined forces some seven years ago. Remaining consistent hitmakers, the duo has left an indelible mark and are indeed two exceptional artistes who have decided to unify their voices in their message-filled songs geared towards past, present and future generations…and they have been able to successfully bridge the generation gap, as they embark on their mission to spread reggae’s powerful message. But how did fate bring the DJ and singer together? Simple. A love for each other’s masterful work. In 2002, Suga Roy, then a talented DJ and producer, was so impressed with Conrad Crystal’s 1986 release, ‘True Love’, that he sought out the singer and requested that both of them record a remake of the hit single. The remake was a success and both found that they had a natural chemistry. More combinations followed: a cover of the Pat Kelly original ‘Talk About Love’, followed by a cover of Gregory Isaacs’ ‘Love Overdue’. Their successful recordings continued, yielding the originals ‘Man Can’t Walk In Peace’ on the Yellow Moon label, ‘Mek Dem A Gwaan Suh’ on Stone Love’s Real Rock rhythm, ‘Tired A It’ and ‘Education Wise’. All powerful, thought-provoking tracks that enjoyed success on the local and international charts, as well as getting heavy rotation in the dancehalls and on the airwaves. ‘Education Wise’, an anthem in schools, held the number one spot on the Mega Jamz chart for three weeks, ‘Love Overdue’ peaked at number four on the RJR chart and both tunes rode Richie B’s Hot Mix chart.
