No surprise, he has a deep understanding of the process and of the technical and engineering side. Starting out in music in Boston, James helped engineer the first New Edition album. He then moved to New York and worked in music engineering for artists like Run-DMC, Chaka Kahn and others. Another move back to Boston introduced James to video production and post work including commercial work and his first experience with sound for picture. Three years were spent on projects taking him to Europe, Russia and South America. James is based in Atlanta, Georgia. PÉTER SZAFFKÓ CENTRAL EUROPEAN THEATRE AND THE CANADIAN THEATRE REVIEW: THE FIRST DECADE 1. Introduction The history of the Canadian theatre goes back to 1606 when the first theatrical performance was presented on the shores of Port Royal to celebrate the return of the Governor from his trip. Nevertheless, professional theatre in Canada has a relatively short history; in fact, less than half a century. With some exaggeration, I might also say that theatre criticism in Canada has existed ever since the regular publication of local and national newspapers. The story of this fascinating genre is very well illustrated and commented upon in Establishing Our Boundaries published in 1999. Theatre journals, however, emerged only in the 1960s when various experts—directors, historians, dramaturgs, critics and scholars—wanted to express their views on the state of affairs as well as the development of the theatre arts in Canada. Although the difference between day-to-day criticism of individual performances and a more academic approach to the art of the theatre in any culture may seem evident, it is worth quoting Herbert Whittaker, one of the doyens of Canadian theatre criticism, who was the first national chairman of the Canadian Theatre Critics Association and worked for the Globe and Mail for more than thirty years. Concerning the history of Canadian theatre criticism, he wrote that The academic critic is allowed a more historical perspective, watching for the trends taken by [the current theatrical] expression. While the daily working critic feels part of the daily creativity, clinging precariously to his objectivity, the periodical critics must look for overall 171 developments, making note of similar trends in time and place. -

Myrna Kostash was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and educated at the Universities of Alberta, Washington and Toronto. She was awarded the M.A. degree in Russian Language and Literature in 1968 (Toronto). A founding member of The Periodical Writers' Association of Canada and of the Writers' Guild of Alberta, she served as president of the WGA (1989-90) and as chair of The Writers' Union of Canada (1993-94). She served as Alberta representative to the Board of Governors of the Canadian Conference of the Arts (1996-2000).She is a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada, the Writers’ Guild of Alberta, the Creative Nonfiction Collective, Alberta Playwrights’ Network and PEN. She is a co-founding member of the Creative Nonfiction Collective, and served as its president 2003-6 and 2008-2011. She is a founding member of the now-defunct Canada Yugoslavia Literary Association. In 2010 she became a Fellow of the (now defunct) Sophia Institute, Columbia University. She was an executive member of the Board of the Parkland Institute, University of Alberta, 2002-6, 2007 - 2012. Kostash is the recipient of several Canada Council, Alberta Foundation for the Literary Arts and Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) grants. In 1985, she was awarded a Silver citation in the National Magazine Awards and was short-listed in 1997. In 1999 she was a finalist in the Western Magazine awards. In 1988, her book, No Kidding: Inside the World of Teenage Girls, received the Alberta Culture and Writers' Guild of Alberta prizes for Best Non-Fiction. In 1994 she was awarded the same prize for her book, Bloodlines: A Journey Into Eastern Europe.
