The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ April 2021 By Dave Badertscher After 18 long months without “live” Braves baseball in Atlanta, more than 14,000 masked, socially distanced fans turned out for Opening Night at Truist Park on Friday, April 9. When the gates opened the stadium began filling to 33% capacity, our eyes drawn to “44” etched in center field as “real” fans replaced the cardboard cutouts of 2020. We eagerly anticipated a much needed in-person baseball experience. It was high time for a rematch of the opening series in Philly, which had not gone well for our guys. Charlie Morton vs. Zack Wheeler rebooted. Braves fans were pumped! What would Opening Night at a Braves game be without evoking memories of the franchise’s 50+ years relationship with the city of Atlanta and the South? A moving pregame ceremony paid tribute to the passing of Bill Bartholomay, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, and Hank Aaron, highlighting their legendary contributions to the team, the game of baseball, and our community. Fan Club member Wayne Coleman (pictured bottom right) played “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. Timothy Miller sang the “National Anthem.” Jets flew over. Fans stood and cheered. Braves Country at its best. The Tomahawk Times April 2021 Page 2 The Phillies brought an impressive, early 5-1 record to town. The pitching duel between Morton and Wheeler held until Ronald Acuna launched a 456 foot, two-run blast and the Braves scored three in the bottom of the 5th. The red-hot Acuna ending up going 4 for 5 and made a sensational run-saving catch in the 6th.

Cangrejeros challenge Indians as Puerto Rican Baseball Comes to Central Florida Caribbean Winter League Baseball Coming Soon to Orlando SAN JUAN, PR (Sept. 9, 2015) – At a news conference in Puerto Rico today, Puerto Rican baseball officials announced that two teams from its Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League will play three regular season games at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida. This season, the famed Cangrejeros de Santurce will face the Indios de Mayaguez in a three-game series at Champion Stadium on November 20-22. This series marks the first time Clemente League teams will play official season games within the continental U.S. The league last played outside of Puerto Rico in the Inter League Series in 2009 and played with the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League. The Indios de Mayaguez are the Clemente League’s Sub-Champion this past season, while Cangrejeros de Santurce is the League’s defending Champion, and the home team in this series. The three games will be part of the League’s regular season calendar, and as such, are to be counted towards the team standings at the end of the season. “The games are meant to reconnect the Hispanic community in Central Florida with Caribbean Baseball, especially those of Puerto Rican descent living in the area which, for the most part, are already second and third generations and have never had the opportunity to witness our baseball,” said Cangrejeros de Santurce President Dr. Miguel Sosa Padilla . “Our level of play here in Puerto Rico is highly underestimated by the rest of the baseball world,” said Cangrejeros General Manager Frankie Higginbotham.

The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ April 2019 After getting off to a rough 0-3 start in Philadelphia, the Braves came home to a sellout crowd of 41,192 at SunTrust Park on April 1, shutting out the Chicago Cubs, 8-0. The Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Ender Inciarte led off with a home run and later in the inning, returning hometown favorite, Brian McCann, hit a 2-run single. Sean Newcomb and the bullpen held tough the rest of the way and our hitters made the Cubs’ porous defense pay dearly. Ronald Acuña, Jr. homered (pictured above at right) and Ozzie Albies went 3 for 4 on the night. Even better, our Braves went on to sweep the three-game series with Cubs: 8-0, 6-4, and 9-4. So what’s the outlook for the defending NL East Champion Braves in 2019? Well, read on. 400 Fan Club prognosticator, Howard Evans, lays it on the line, as he’s done in past April issues of The Tomahawk Times. Don’t forget, Howard was more on the money last year than most “experts.” The Tomahawk Times April 2019 Page 2 By Howard Evans In horse racing, they play the familiar trumpet refrain signifying the horses are at the gate. Well, the NL Eastern Division horses have broken for the early division lead as forecast. The general population of Braves fans bemoaned the lack of Braves player movement during the offseason while Philly, Washington, and New York made the headlines.
