What would Opening Night at a Braves game be without evoking memories of the franchise’s 50+ years relationship with the city of Atlanta and the South? A moving pregame ceremony paid tribute to the passing of Bill Bartholomay, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, and Hank Aaron, highlighting their legendary contributions to the team, the game of baseball, and our community. Fan Club member Wayne Coleman (pictured bottom right) played “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. Timothy Miller sang the “National Anthem.” Jets flew over. Fans stood and cheered. The Indios de Mayaguez are the Clemente League’s Sub-Champion this past season, while Cangrejeros de Santurce is the League’s defending Champion, and the home team in this series. The three games will be part of the League’s regular season calendar, and as such, are to be counted towards the team standings at the end of the season. “The games are meant to reconnect the Hispanic community in Central Florida with Caribbean Baseball, especially those of Puerto Rican descent living in the area which, for the most part, are already second and third generations and have never had the opportunity to witness our baseball,” said Cangrejeros de Santurce President Dr. Miguel Sosa Padilla . “Our level of play here in Puerto Rico is highly underestimated by the rest of the baseball world,” said Cangrejeros General Manager Frankie Higginbotham.

    The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ April 2019 After getting off to a rough 0-3 start in Philadelphia, the Braves came home to a sellout crowd of 41,192 at SunTrust Park on April 1, shutting out the Chicago Cubs, 8-0. The Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Ender Inciarte led off with a home run and later in the inning, returning hometown favorite, Brian McCann, hit a 2-run single. Sean Newcomb and the bullpen held tough the rest of the way and our hitters made the Cubs’ porous defense pay dearly. Ronald Acuña, Jr. homered (pictured above at right) and Ozzie Albies went 3 for 4 on the night. Even better, our Braves went on to sweep the three-game series with Cubs: 8-0, 6-4, and 9-4. So what’s the outlook for the defending NL East Champion Braves in 2019?
