Page 2 Dim Bulb August 2017 Presidents Column High Beemers Let me sum up July riding in one word “HOT” M/C Club Late June and early July did find some of our members on the road. For myself I did a couple small runs before I started my ride to the BMW MOA PO Box 3127 convention in Salt Lake. I traveled I80 to Salt Lake. Checking into the mo- Sparks NV 89432 tel I was joined by Doug and later in the evening was joined by Dave who drove his truck from Reno. The next day I went to the Utah State Fair- grounds and registered for the rally. Being it was Thursday morning the first day many of the vendors were still in the final stages of setting up and President preparing for the weekend. The typical tires, seats and any kind of acces- Fred Barrie sory were on display. I found looking and listening to tour companies from Europe and Australia resulted in a lot of daydreaming. The first morning of 775.745.1936 the rally found Doug giving a presentation on the Garmin Navigator. I was [email protected] able to follow his presentation without getting “lost”. Due to time con- straints, I left on Friday morning. I did not get to attend the presentation by Vice President Dave. Next time any of you see Steve ask him about his new shiny wheels. I am sure he would be more than happy to tell you all them. Russ Ristine Leaving the rally I rode back on I-80 to Winnemucca where I met a friend 775.742.5866 from Sparks. Saturday morning we headed north through Jordan Valley [email protected] and Western Idaho into the Hells Canyon area of Northeastern Oregon. Sunday we rode across Northern Oregon over to Pendleton. From there Treasurer we rode south to Mt. Vernon and continued on to Prineville. Monday we started home via a stop at Crater Lake. Having flown over Crater Lake Ernie Baragar many times, it was my first trip to view the lake at ground level. Leaving 775.219.8881 Crater Lake we continue on to Klamath Falls Oregon. Taking several back roads we stopped in Adin, California for lunch. From there it was on to Su- [email protected] sanville and then the final leg back into Reno. HIghbeemers Website Not returning until late afternoon on Monday, I missed our monthly break- Larie Trippet fast ride led by Doug. I went out to meet Herb who was leading our month- ly GS ride. Herb had a route planned but no one showed up. Herb emailed 775.690.4936 later and told me he had no trouble keeping the “group” together on the ride he led... Www.highbeemers.org I am looking forward to seeing the stories that are members hopefully turn Newsletter Editor in so we can enjoy rides they took in the month of July. We will have to Jim Morrow wait for Doug and Jim who left for their European ride to read about their adventure. 775.501.0778 I especially want to give a shout out to Larie for his commitment to get our [email protected] website up and functioning correctly. I know he has spent many hours on this project. Another area we will be working on is our Facebook page. There seems to be some problems with members using it. Looking at the weather, it appears that August will remain HOT. Stay cool and ride safe. Fred Volume 27 Issue 08 The High Beemers M/C of Northern Nevada Chartered Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75 Page 3 Dim Bulb August 2017 The July Breakfast Ride by Doug Laird Four of us showed up the for July Breakfast Ride. Maybe some we’re still traveling back from the rally in Salt Lake City and oth- er might be on trips. Or was it the heat? Ac- tually it was a pretty good day to ride. The overnight winds cleared the air of the smoke we’ve been getting and the tempera- ture at the start was 75 degrees. We rode down to the Red Hut in Carson City for breakfast and then came back to Reno via Incline Village. The temperature was great riding over to Incline but after crossing Mt. Rose Pass it worked up to 92. Still not too bad. Remember, the August 21st Breakfast Ride will start at 8AM. We’ll go back to the 9AM start with the Septem- ber Breakfast Ride. Fred Barrie did show up early to send us off and answer questions about the High Beemers' members and or- ganization. We had a nice chat for about 40 minutes until it was clear no one was committed to riding on a perfect day in the mountains. It was too good a day to waste with blue skies, light breeze, and 70 to 80 deg. F at higher elevations, so I took a poll of the group (me, myself, and I) as to what to do. Not wanting a solo ride over Diamond Mountain on Gold Run Road, I decided to take the long way home via the usual Loyalton, Sierraville, Truckee, Lake Tahoe route. I knew it was a risk with summer Saturday traffic at Kings Beach, but wanted to explore Mt. Wat- son Road, also called Carnelian Bay Ave., running west from the summit between Kings Beach and Northstar. Mt. Watson Road winds west for 10 miles through the forest on an ever- diminishing paved road and then turns to dirt. A quiet and scenic forest on a curvy road was a cool and pleasant diversion for a Sat- urday morning. Sure enough, when I approached the light at Kings Beach, traffic was backed up. It took eight to ten lights to get through; each time the light turned green, traffic could not move forward. After leaving Kings Beach my "group" unanimously agreed that we did not want to eat lunch at home. We decided for the quiet park benches at the parking lot trailhead of Slide Mountain. Keeping with the tradition of prior High Beemers trip reports, we decided this lunch site was a suitable location to photograph all riders and their bikes (see below). We also took a photo of the hang gliders about to launch from the road. The participants on this ride complimented the leader on the ride and noted it was a great day and serene ride with the High Beemers. Next time we'll include Gold Run Road. 130 miles, 4 hours Herb Kirby [email protected] Volume 27 Issue 08 The High Beemers M/C of Northern Nevada Chartered Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75 Page 7 Dim Bulb August 2017 Members Rides July 2017 Ernie Baragar at the Salmon Glacier, 20 miles NW of Hyder, AK. Jim Mc, Tim and Jim M accompanied Dan. Our trip report by Tim Dughi: Friday June 30 : Jim Morrow and I left Reno @ noon and traveled to Alturas, Ca. to get a jump on this adventure and be well rested to hit the dirt the next day, Day one: We met Dan and Jim Mc (Mac) mid day for brunch and prep for the trip. The four of us headed north to the ca./ore. border and hit the trail. Jim lost his lid to the right pannier right off the bat. Mac went to re- trieve but could not find it...We secured the load via a rope (clothesline) that I brought and we were on our way.

  • How to Ride a Big-Bore, Dual-Sport Motorcycle Off Road
How To Ride A Motorcycle Off Road Riding Techniques for Large Dual-Purpose Bikes By David Petersen ( aka Mr. BestRest ) Reading this Article won’t make you an expert Off Road rider, but it might teach you a few things. It might give you a few pointers, and it might help you improve whatever Off Road skills you now have. This Article covers the Basics. It’s not a substitute for expert instructors who can take you to the field and give you 1-on-1, hands-on instruction. Why Did I Write This Article? (Some now call it a “book”) I wrote it because I want to raise YOUR understanding of what it takes to ride Off Road. I want to educate you and empower you so that you’ll be able ride to the places I ride, and do things that I enjoy doing. My purpose is not to sell you BestRest gear http://www.bestrestproducts.com. (By way of full disclosure you should know that I own the company). Yes, I make or sell gear that’s mentioned in these pages but I’ll try to avoid turning this Article into a sales pitch. If you choose to buy some of my Company’s gear that’s great, but that's not my motivation for writing. Every day I talk to customers who call my shop to place an order. During our conversations they ask my opinion about gear they’ll need for Off Road riding. They also ask me to describe riding techniques, help them with trip preparation, and more.

Page 2 1. 1980 – entering a new era in motorcycles. Munich. The BMW team were all smiles as they presented the brand‟s new production motorcycle at the IFMA international bicycle and motorcycle show in Cologne in September 1980. Here, under the critical eye of industry experts and the astonished gaze of visitors, it was clear that the BMW product developers‟ latest creation had hit the bull‟s eye. The brand new R 80 G/S – a bike designed to offer fun in spades with its ability to dive through the corners and clock up the touring miles – saw BMW Motorrad buck the established trend at the time towards specialist machines. The G/S in its designation referred not to “Geländesport” (off-road sport) but rather its “Gelände/Straße” (off- road/road) crossover skill set. 30 years ago the idea of the universal- use motorcycle appeared to be dead in the water. Clearly defined parameters of engineering and design were setting the tone for the mass market, but BMW resolved to swim against the tide. The Munich-based company created a new breed of motorcycle with the R 80 G/S, one designed to reverse the prevailing trend.
