AARE GORGE The Haslital, one of the large valleys in the central alps, stretches from the Grimsel Pass to the Lake of Brienz. The flat valley floor of the lower Haslital is separated from the upper valley by a transverse rock formation. Over thousands of years, the Aare River eroded a path through this rock formation resulting in a gorge which is 1’400 metres long and up to 200 metres deep. This gorge has been accessible for over 100 years by a system of safe paths and tunnels. The walk through the gorge is a very special way to experience nature ALPEN TOWER In summer the Alpen tower is a perfect point of departure for many hikes and for paragliding. • Climate Change and Tourism in Switzerland : a Survey on Impacts, Vulnerability and Possible Adaptation Measures
Climate Change and Tourism in Switzerland : a Survey on Impacts, Vulnerability and Possible Adaptation Measures Cecilia Matasci, Juan‐Carlos Altamirano‐Cabrera 1 Research group on the Economics and Management of the Environment Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, CH1015 Lausanne, Switzerland, [email protected] The tourism industry is particularly affected by climate change, being very climate‐ and weather‐ dependent. Moreover, particularly in the Alpine region, it is specially exposed to natural hazards. Nonetheless, this industry is an important pillar of the Swiss economy, providing employment and generating income. Then, it becomes essential to reduce its vulnerability and starting implementing adaptation measures. In order to do so, it is important to define which areas face which problems and to recognize vulnerability hot spots. This motivation comes from the prospect that the largest environmental, social and economic damages are likely to be concentrated in vulnerable areas. This article presents an overview of the current state of the knowledge on the impacts, the vulnerability and the possible adaptation measures of the tourism industry in relation to climate change. Moreover, it presents different methods that could help assessing this vulnerability, referring in particular to the Swiss situation. This is the first step toward the establishment of the vulnerability analysis and the consequent examination of possible adaptation measures. Keywords: climate change, adaptation, vulnerability, tourism, Switzerland Introduction Climate change is a global phenomenon, but its effects occur on a local scale. Moreover, these effects have a clear impact on economic activities. An example of an activity heavily affected is tourism. Tourism is closely interlinked with climate change both as culprit and as victim.

C M Y K Sxxx,2011-08-28,TR,001,Bs-4C,E1 SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, 2011 Over The Alps On a Bike With A Boost Cycling Swiss mountain passes with battery power (and some breath to spare) isn’t a bad way to cheat. BY TIM NEVILLE HE road east out of Sören- berg rears up into a series of steep turns that climb the Glaubenbielen Pass, the T high point of a road the Swiss Army punched through the Alps more than 60 years ago. Though the occasional car and bus make the jour- ney to the top, these days much of the road belongs to cyclists. On a cool afternoon in mid-July I was one of them. I hadn’t ridden much all season, yet something primordial kicked in when I spied another biker just ahead. His calf muscles were swollen like Salamanca hams, and he was stooped over the bars, sweat drip- ping onto the pavement. Easy pickings, I thought, as I tore after him. Within moments I’d reeled him in. He, gasping; me, hardly out of breath: I felt, well, guilty. “You’re cheating!” he panted in German as I sped by. “You’ll be out of power soon!” He was right: I was cheating. With the mash of a button on my handle- bars, a 250-watt electric motor had spun to life and increased the power of my pedal strokes by 150 percent. Sud- denly I had my own domestique, a 26- volt brute that seemed to grab the saddle and shove me onward every Continued on Page 6 TOMAS VAN HOUTRYVE FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES A Flyer electric bicycle helps a rider get over the Grosse Scheidegg Pass in Switzerland.

From here we followed the milky glacial meltwaters of the Lutschine River to Lauterbrunnen where we boarded the train for the last leg of our journey to Wengen, perched high on the alp above. It was a short walk to our hotel where we had time to settle in and admire the amazing scenery. It had been a very hot day with temperatures in the mid-30s and, as we enjoyed our evening meal on the terrace, we were treated to a superb alpenglow on the Jungfrau. Day 2 Monday 27th June The hot sunny weather of yesterday looked set to continue, so we took the cable-car up to Mannlichen. We were immediately in a different world, surrounded by a panorama of mountains, dominated by the imposing north faces of the Jungfrau and Eiger, and with a wealth of alpine flowers at our feet.

  • Lots of Snow on the Lauberhorn - Unfortunately No Spectators
Verein Internationale Lauberhornrennen Postfach 385 CH-3823 Wengen Tel. +41 33 856 66 66 [email protected] www.lauberhorn.ch CHE-107.310.838 MWST Wengen, 31 December 2020 Lots of snow on the Lauberhorn - unfortunately no spectators An important test shortly before the 91st International Lauberhorn Races in Wengen has been passed: The snow inspection by the International Ski Federation FIS. The organizers are looking forward to exciting ski races in the Alpine World Cup despite the tough Corona conditions. They ask all ski fans to watch the races on TV due to the pandemic, as no spectators are allowed in Wengen. The International Ski Federation FIS checked the Ski World Cup courses on the Lauberhorn today, Friday (December 31, 2020). The snow inspection turned out to be positive throughout. Thanks to the snowfalls in the past few days, the entire mountain is covered in deep snow. This means that the slopes and also the scenery are ready for the 91st International Lauberhorn Races in Wengen. "So far this year, all in all, we have been lucky with the weather. The temperatures have been below freezing for a few days. The cold is perfect for the snow on and also off the piste," says a pleased OC President Urs Näpflin. Preparations in Wengen are on track. Please watch the races on television This year's Lauberhorn races, as in all areas of our lives, are strongly influenced by the ongoing pandemic. As is well known, the races will therefore be held without spectators. The spectator areas along the course, such as the popular Girmschbiel facing Hundschopf, Minschkannte and Canadian Corner will be closed.
