Drummond l€tters known to have been prepublished in Western Australian newspapers During his time as the Australian Botanical Liaison Officer in Kew in 1992, Dr Philip Short of the National Herbarium of Victoda found evidencesuggesting that the first p\blication of Hakea yictoria by JamesDrummond was probably not, as has always been thought, in an English journal produced by William Hooker in 1848, but was almost certainly within the Western Australian newspaperThe Inquirer, probably in 1847. Since the author is part of a project to revise the genus Hakea, along wrthL. Haegi and W.R. Barker of the sameinstitution, this was drawn to our attention. This promptedthe cun€nt investigation,and so a copy of the completetext ofthe JamesDrummond letter pdnted in The Inquirer in 1847 was obtainedftom the Baftye Library in Perth. A very much abddged part of it appearedin Botanical Magazine 74 Companion pp. l-3 (Drummond 1848) as "Notice of Mr. Drummond's discoverv of three remarkableplants in South-WestAustralia". This latter publication has alwaysbeen cited as containingthe protologuefor l1dkea victoriabut The Inquirer articleclearly predatesit (Principle III, IntemationalRules of Botanical Nomenclature, Greuter et al. 1994). Names published in a non-scientific newspaperbelbre January 1, 1953 are effectively and validly published (Art. 29, International Code of Botanical Nomenclature). As a consequenceother nameswhich appearin this samearticle are also validly published(provided they areaccompanied by an adequatedescription) and should be consideredby botanistsrevising the groups concerned(e.g. Kingia C!gnorum, AnigozonthusChelneii, BanksiaHookeri, lambertia Hakeoides), mosl appearto be synonymsof earliernames. Becauseit was obvious from referencesgiven in Erickson (1969) that other letters written by Drummond had also found their way to the newspapersin Perth,copies of Drummond articlesin Z/re Inquirer of 6thDecember 1848 and in The Perth Gazetteover 5 weeksfrom 16th April to 14th May 1852, were also requestedftom the Battye Library. These articles were fbund to corespond to accountsreproduced in Hooker's journals asshown in Table 1. Unlike the original case,these a icles were not abridgedbut reproducedby Hooker in full. However, becauseofthe earlierpublication of the newspaperaccounts, two species,Gastrolobium leqkeanumand Verttcordia grqndis, previouslythought to havebeen published originally in Hooker's Journalof Botanyand Kew GardensMiscellany (Vol. l, p.247 in 1849and Vol. 5, p. 119 in 1853, respectively;see Barker & Barker 1990), should now be cited as follows: Gastrolobium leakeqnumJ. Excerpts of parts of The Inquirer article were reproduced by Erickson (1969) in her account of the life of James Drummond, but most botanical references were missing. There are also comments on the botany of a number of groups of plants, on geology and on the itinerary followed. It is, however, only a very succinct account considedng that Drummond collected 16 sets of 400 species in this the 4th Collection and that it lasted at least from November 1846, when James Drummond and George Maxwell departed Gingin, to late March 1847 when they returned to Perth (Erickson 1969]. Western Australia 6346 com GHD CONSULTANTS 1/10 VICTORIA ST BUNBURY WA 6230 ATTENTION: FIONNUALA HANNON FAUNA HABITATS OF WASHDOWN SITE ON MURRAY ROAD AND GRAVEL PIT #6 1.Proposed Murray Road heavy machinery washdown exit road. I examined this site for one hour on 22 February 2011. According to my advice on site the assessment was required of an easement some 100m x 20m for the exit road from the washdown pad, not the pad itself as the proposed site is previously disturbed. The vegetation is a very open mallee with Eucalyptus buprestium and E. pleurocarpa on grey-white loamy sand. Medium height shrubs were Hakea coryombosa, Allocasuarina humilus, Calothamnus gracilis and C.?villosus over lower shrubs Bank- sia repens, Beaufortia micrantha, Daviesia reversifolia and Taxandria spathulata. The vegetation is largely undisturbed though there is an old cleared access along the north side of the easement. It appears more open than adjacent vegetation; I believe this is natural. Site of required clearing of vegetation for exit road Birds recorded were only Tawny-crowned Honeyeater. Other fauna: Western Grey Kangaroo (scats only) and Echidna (scratching only). The tenure of the land is presumed to be the Murray Road road reserve. The area involved is approximately 0.2 ha. Issues and constraints? There are no issues or constraints with the clearing of this vegetation from a fauna conservation point of view because the area is small, no critical habitats for vertebrate fauna, particularly threatened species, are present and there is adequate adjacent habitat to accommodate any fauna displaced.

Such conditions limit seed production and restrict opportunities for seedling recruitment making protection from granivores paramount. Our focus was on Hakea, a genus of shrubs widespread in southwestern Australia, whose nutritious seeds are targeted by strong-billed cockatoos. We assessed 56 Hakea species for cockatoo damage in 150 populations spread over 900 km in relation to traits expected to deter avian granivory: dense spiny foliage; large, woody fruits; fruit crypsis via leaf mimicry and shielding; low seed stores; and fruit clustering. We tested hypothesises centred on optimal seed defenses in relation to to a) pollination syndrome (bird vs insect), b) fire regeneration strategy (killed vs resprouting) and c) on-plant seed storage (transient vs prolonged). Twenty species in 50 populations showed substantial seed loss from cockatoo granivory. No subregional trends in granivore damage or protective traits were detected, though species in drier, hotter areas were spinier. Species lacking spiny foliage around the fruits (usually bird-pollinated) had much larger (4−5 times) fruits than those with spiny leaves and cryptic fruits (insect-pollinated).

However, adverse weather and other local considerations can necessitate some re-ordering of the programme during the course of the tour, though this will always be done to maximise best use of the time and weather conditions available. Day 1 In Flight We depart Heathrow early afternoon on a scheduled flight bound for Perth (usually via Dubai), the capital of the vast state of Western Australia. Departures from some regional airports may be organised on request - availability permitting and additional costs possible. Day 2 Perth Arriving at Perth International Airport late afternoon, we will be met and transferred to our city hotel, just a half-hour bus ride away and conveniently located in the city centre.

Day 1 Friday 2nd September Weather: Warm and Sunny in London. Hot (34 degrees) in Dubai. Juliet, Peter and Rachel met with Paul at the boarding gate for Emirates flight EK002 Heathrow to Dubai, departing at 14-00hrs. However, due to industrial action by the in-flight meal providers, the flight was delayed for one and three-quarter hours, eventually taking off at 16-15hrs. Following a 7 hour flight we arrived in Dubai, where upon we had to make a quick dash across the airport to catch our connecting flight on to Perth. Day 2 Saturday 3rd September Weather: Hot in Dubai. Cloudy and hazy sunshire, 18 degrees in Perth. The Emirates EK420 flight to Perth departed Dubai at 03-15hrs, arriving in Perth at 17-15hrs local time. After completing the immigration, customs and quarantine formalities, we met up with Doug Taggart, our Australian driver for the duration of the tour. Doug transported us into the city, showing us some of the sites on the way, including the Swan River and The Western Australian Cricket Ground, before taking us to The Miss Maudes Swedish Hotel, our base for the next two nights.
