The spectacles staged here involved the killing of tens of thousands of gladiators, prisoners, and wild animals. Records of these games brag of seemingly impossible acts - beasts magically appearing on stage and water flash-flooding the arena so that full-sized ships could engage in sea battles. Were the Romans exaggerating or did they truly achieve these feats? Until now, experts have been dubious - but what if these aren’t tall tales? Now, a team of modern builders and engineers test their theories by building a trap door- pulley system capable of lifting a beast into the Colosseum. Do they have what it takes to replicate the innovation and ingenuity of the Romans? Australia’s greatest Olympian Ian Thorpe, iconic Indigenous actor Ernie Dingo, and TV presenter and Queen of Eurovision Julia Zemiro set off on an epic journey of genetic time travel to find out. • Top Pick Tuesday 21 March 8.30Pm Final
1 Top Pick Tuesday 21 March 8.30pm Final Bullied Hosted by Ian Thorpe, Bullied is a controversial and compelling insight into the issue of school bullying that brings victims and their classmates together in an effort to help understand the impacts of bullying and create strategies for change. Chloe is 16 years old and suffers from a rare genetic disorder that causes her significant physical disability. From birth, her life has been a fight for survival, and she’s battled to be treated the same as any other child. But since starting High School, Chloe has endured relentless verbal and physical bullying. The physical threats especially, have left both Chloe and her parents fearful of her attending school. The consequences of her becoming involved in a fight or a fall could be devastating. Chloe has tried to ignore her bullies, but nothing she has done has helped so far. Even interventions by her parents and the school have failed to alleviate the problem. Living in a remote town, Chloe’s options for an alternative school are limited, and now she’s at risk of having to drop out of formal, school-based education entirely. Now, both Chloe and her parents have decided to take a stand. Her family don’t want to see the bullying behaviour destroy Chloe’s chances for a proper education, so they’ve agreed to allow her to take hidden cameras into school, in an attempt to gather evidence of her bullying. They hope it’ll be a solution to her torment and create a permanent and positive change at the school.

  • Stop Laughing...This Is Serious Stop Laughing...This Is Serious a Three-Part Documentary Series Narrated by Eric Bana
Stop Laughing...this is serious Stop Laughing...this is serious A three-part documentary series narrated by Eric Bana Starts on Wednesday, March 25 at 9pm on ABC National Documentary Program Introduction Stop Laughing… this is serious is a three-part documentary series charting a course through the story of Australian comedy, featuring more than 60 interviews with the men and women who make us laugh. Through a blend of social history, extensive archive material and intimate interviews with some of the country’s most loved comedians, we travel via stand up, radio, television, theatre and film from indigenous comedy to new viral media jokers of today, revealing how humour, laughter and comedy are integral to our national identity. By unpicking our cultural cringe, poking fun at our national identity, confronting hard truths and exploring our taboos, we come to realise that Australians’ greatest characteristic is our ability to laugh at ourselves. Narrated by Eric Bana, the series explores the development of Australian comedy through social and political change, examining the way humour has reflected and responded to multicultural Australia, gender issues, and politics. Each episode moves seamlessly through time, weaving contemporary comedy with early comedic performance, featuring insight and anecdotes from what Barry Humphries calls “the cheering up business”. The first episode, “LOOK AT MOI, LOOK AT MOI” (Kath and Kim) looks inwards at the importance of our ability to laugh at ourselves. From Edna Everage, the mousy Melbourne housewife, and Sandy Stone – the man to whom nothing ever happens, to school kids like Kylie Mole and Ja’mie and Aussie battlers like Dad and Dave, Paul Hogan and Kenny, we realize that what’s right under our very own nose is often the funniest thing of all.
