2 - The CORNSTALK Gazette Feb - March 2016 PRESIDENT'S REPORT At 9:18 a.m. on 30th November 2015 my best and oldest friend of 42 years, Damian Cobley-Finch died as I held his hand. I realise that this is a deeply personal event perhaps not having a great deal to do with folk in NSW. However, Damian’s life was an extremely ‘folkie’ event and I wanted to write a little about it here. Many of you would have ‘known’ Damian from his attendance at a multitude of folk festivals around the country. He was a regular at the National and a perennial at the Woodford Folk Festival, the festival he absolutely adored. He would always walk away from a festival with hundreds of dollars worth of CD’s in support of the artists that he loved so much. He conceptualised and created the Acoustica festival that used to be held in Birch- grove Park when the ALP was in control of Leichardt council. Damian was, at the time, the deputy mayor of Leichardt. He was also a member of ‘Good Things Enterprises’ that brought Judy Small into the folk limelight in 1982 with her first album ‘A Natural Selection’. He was one of the group who contributed funds and substantial effort to bringing forth one of Australia’s finest singer-. He was also a member of Gumnut Productions, which promoted many fine concerts in Sydney in the early and mid 80’s. The one I remember with great fondness had a stack of folk headliners in it: Sirocco, Raglan Road, Eric Bogle with Jock Munro and Brent Miller, Margret RoadKnight and of course Judy Small being introduced to Australia. It was an amazing concert with unbelievable Aussie talent on show in a beautiful venue. I remember many stories being told of the bill posting that went on, illegally of course, all round the Sydney CBD in the middle of the night. Damian’s commitment to folk music continued for many years when he ran the OzFocus radio program on 2SER FM. It used to happen, if I remember correctly, at 1.00 pm on Monday afternoons and he would turn up rain or shine. I was delighted to carry the show on the odd occasion when he couldn’t make it when he had to be out of town. It had a loyal following and nothing as good, in my opinion, has ever replaced it on that station’s airwaves. What Damian did on the show was proudly broadcast the full spectrum of folk music that was born here in Australia. He was extremely eclectic in his tastes with music from Anglo, Celtic, and early white Australiana being played with pride. Where Damian also shone was in his inclusion and embracing of Indigenous and transcultural (aka multicultural or ‘World’) music. His scheduling and the music blasted out over the air- waves generated a richness of musical diversity that I, and many others like me, loved. Damian reflected the true nature of Australian Folk. He leaves us with grief from me & from those who truly new him & what he stood for. He was the true Aussie in every way; fair, equita- ble and embracing. He was the quintessential Laborist. For me, folk festivals will never be the same again. It was always a highlight of any festival to meet up with him and share a meal and a great and entertaining chin wag. I miss him terribly and will always, especially when I walk through the gates of a festival with that sense of excitement and anticipation, which will now always be shaded, by that sense of loss. I’ve included his photo since many of you will know him by face rather than by name. That is who the man was and his sense of optimism and hope is characterised by the ‘V’; a life victorious and well lived. Andy Busuttil

The Folk Federation of NSW ONLINE - jam.org.au The CORNSTALK Gazette The CORNSTALK Gazette Feb - March 2016 - 9 Celebration of Fifty Fabulous National Festivals The dust barely settles on one National Folk Festival and it is time to start thinking about the next. In 2016, with our 50th Festival in sight we are gearing up for a big year, looking to produce another quality and successful event to mark this important milestone. Back in the 1960s when the idea for a “national” Festival in Australia was conceived, folk music in the United States was moving into the mainstream with the highly successful Newport Folk Festival gaining wide publicity for the genre. Founded in 1959 Newport cultivated a broad range of folk music from the start and still continues to stretch the boundaries of folk to this day. The first National Folk Festival grew out of the idea that a similar type of fes- tival in Australia might attract new audiences to ‘folk’ here. That first festival was held on the weekend of 11 & 12 Febru- ary 1967 at the Teachers College, Melbourne University, was called the Port Phillip District Folk Music Festival and was relatively modest compared to the current event. Two days with an Official Opening on the Friday evening by Alan Mar- shall. The cost of a weekend ticket was $3.50. Of course festivals don’t just happen overnight. Planning for the event had begun in February 1966 with Martyn Wyndham-Read (who unfortunately had to return to England Glen Tomasetti before the festival took place in ’67) and Glen Tomasetti playing key roles. The Committee was chaired by Shirley An- from the other states. As the famous Paul Kelly/Kev Carmony song says, From little Things, Big Things Gro, and so has it been for the National Folk Festival, starting from a ‘little’ idea to bring people together to exchange songs, styles and ideas in the ‘folk’ idiom, with the intention of building a ‘good basic program’ on which future festivals could expand and develop. The National Folk Festival belongs to everyone. It’s our National Folk Festival and those of us who are currently at its helm are merely the caretakers, ensuring the Festival is there for future generations. I certainly wasn’t at the first but it is a privilege to be at the forefront of the 50th and I look forward to joining with you as we celebrate 50 Fabulous Festivals this Easter 2016. The Folk Federation of NSW ONLINE - jam.org.au The CORNSTALK Gazette The CORNSTALK Gazette Feb - March 2016 - 11 Dale & John Dengate Parody competition, Illawarra Folk Festival I recall packing the tent and driving to Jamberoo in 1985. After 31 years, it was a delight to be at the Bulli folk festival sharing time and space with so many ‘old’ friends as we con- tinue to enjoy talented performers in a variety of acts. On the Friday night there were lots of traditional Aussie songs and ballads at the Alan Scott concert to appreciate , but there was something for all ages and tastes and a tremendous number of opportunities in which folk could participate. In my book, that is what marks a folk festival from other music festivals. Among the poetry, dancing, singing sessions thee were instru- mental workshops with lots of young people learning from older looking characters. The Trade Union choirs were there in strength and had us all standing in rousing chorus to ‘Soli- darity for ever’ to help Sydney celebrate its 25th anniversary. It is impossible to get to every venue let alone mention all those who had us laughing or crying with them. Having been asked by Bigruss, that tireless President of Illawarra F.C. to help judge the woolly yarns and the parody competition, I wanted to report back on the entries. I had of- fered John’s beer mug to encourage ongoing writing of paro- dies, and the results have had the audiences joining in chorus and enjoying the considerable skill from all participants. Tony and Gene Smith got the audience off to a fine start with clever words and had us all joining in choruses to ‘It’s slip- ping away from me’. Duncan Chalmers continued in great style with ‘What shall we do with the non-tripe eater?’ No Dale Dengate with winner, Steve Wilson prize for guessing the tune. 12 - The CORNSTALK Gazette Feb - March 2016 cd review

Chloë & Jason Roweth - 'Light Another Fire' The question of what is 'folk' was raised by the new President, Andy Busuttil's comments in ' Cornstalk'. In Australia, we have thousands of years of song, dance and storytelling preserved in the oral traditions and passed on by the generations of the Indigenous nations. It is a rich store that was initially ignored by the white convict settlement as both struggled to survive against the authority of the Brit- ish establishment. Although both cultural expressions of the experiences of these communities were ignored by many who defined 'Art and Culture' , these 'folk variants' did flourish and today a folk festival has so many expressions that it often starts the quest for a single definition. I suggest we celebrate the 1960's and many still treasure their record 'Rebel Chorus' the various sources for 'folk'. with John Dengate, Denis Kevans, Redgum, Eric Bogle and By dedicating this CD to Henry Lawson and John Dengate, The Larrikins. This rebel chorus was sung I think songs about public transport and train trips will be with gusto in the socially and politically turbulent years of even more relevant as the city of Sydney copes with an over- haul of city transport systems. The only way to survive that is to maintain a sense of humour, but definitely do not ‘lie down on the tracks’. The selection on the CDs gives an unique insight into quality of Australian songs and the variety of tunes. The cover with its campfire dark exterior and wattle-golden interior gives a symbolic meaning to the contents, and the initial stiffness loosens with use (the cover, as well as your body!). So, keep Mal Webb playing and singing those folk songs. This double album CD deserves strong promotion and is ideal for those who ask What is 'folk' ? Should it include political statement?
