Tyre talk with Shinji Aoki Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Division

The venue of the traditional season finale, Valencia is a low-grip and technically complex circuit with a slow and twisty asymmetric layout. The frequency of corners at this circuit means the tyres spend a lot of time at high lean angles and have little chance to cool down over the course of a whole lap. The high number of corners and moderate grip level means that if a bike’s setup isn’t optimised at this circuit, it is easy to generate excess tyre temperatures. As this race is the last of the season, low ambient and track temperatures are usually encountered, suggesting the use of softer compounds, however harder compounds are needed on the left shoulder of the rear tyres because of the temperature generated by the last corner. We will debut our new specification hard compound rear slick at Valencia after it was praised by riders in the Misano test, so I am looking forward to seeing it put to good use this weekend. Bridgestone, the tyre manufacturer that focuses on superior performance on winter roads is yet again bringing you more breathtaking action from the winter slopes as it will once again be a major event sponsor for the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup. The 2013/2014 Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season got underway on the 26th October in suitably grand fashion with the women’s and men’s Giant Slalom at Sölden in Austria. In all, Bridgestone will be sponsoring 39 events this season in 8 countries across Europe including Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland, and has announced the renewal of its sponsorship for the next three seasons. Jake Rønsholt, General Manager Corporate and Brand Communications, Bridgestone Europe: “The challenges of winter driving are similar to those of alpine skiing. Both require superior control, balance, safety and grip which is why we are proud to sponsor the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup for the third year running.”

Heading into the final round, Dixon held a 25 point lead over Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves, but the Brazilian was unable to finish ahead of Dixon at the last race, and ultimately took second in the championship. Dixon’s championship crown is his third title, following championship successes in 2003 and 2008 and is the result of a string of dominant performances in the second half of the season, including a run of three consecutive race victories at Pocono and Toronto.
