Recognized by co-producers Stew Remer and Ken Lechter as one of the top-attended shows in HSP’s 14 years of productions, Annie brought together actors from the congregation and other local community theater groups, production and tech crews, and talented musicians. It indeed took a special community to pull off a live production such as this one. With a combined 78 individuals among the production team, crew, orchestra, and actors (including children from eleven area schools), Annie shared a message of hope and optimism with Har Shalom congregants and theater-goers in the surrounding area.

  • Judaism and Jewish Philosophy 19 Judaism, Jews and Holocaust Theology
Please see the Cover and Contents in the last pages of this e-Book Online Study Materials on JUDAISM AND JEWISH PHILOSOPHY 19 JUDAISM, JEWS AND HOLOCAUST THEOLOGY JUDAISM Judaism is the religion of the Jewish people, based on principles and ethics embodied in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and the Talmud. According to Jewish tradition, the history of Judaism begins with the Covenant between God and Abraham (ca. 2000 BCE), the patriarch and progenitor of the Jewish people. Judaism is among the oldest religious traditions still in practice today. Jewish history and doctrines have influenced other religions such as Christianity, Islam and the Bahá’í Faith. While Judaism has seldom, if ever, been monolithic in practice, it has always been monotheistic in theology. It differs from many religions in that central authority is not vested in a person or group, but in sacred texts and traditions. Throughout the ages, Judaism has clung to a number of religious principles, the most important of which is the belief in a single, omniscient, omnipotent, benevolent, transcendent God, who created the universe and continues to govern it. According to traditional Jewish belief, the God who created the world established a covenant with the Israelites, and revealed his laws and commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai in the form of the Torah, and the Jewish people are the descendants of the Israelites. The traditional practice of Judaism revolves around study and the observance of God’s laws and commandments as written in the Torah and expounded in the Talmud. With an estimated 14 million adherents in 2006, Judaism is approximately the world’s eleventh-largest religious group.

  • Walking with Mitzvot Edited by Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson Ogb Hfrs Andvhfrs Rabbi Patricia Fenton in Memory of Harold Held and Louise Held, of Blessed Memory
The Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies Walking with Mitzvot Edited By Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson ogb hfrs andvhfrs Rabbi Patricia Fenton In Memory of Harold Held and Louise Held, of blessed memory The Held Foundation Melissa and Michael Bordy Joseph and Lacine Held Robert and Lisa Held Published in partnership with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the Rabbinical Assembly, the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs and the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. MITZVOT: IMPERATIVES OF A LOVING HEART RABBI BRADLEY SHAVIT ARTSON, D.H.L. MITZVOT AND AGGADAH t is customary to introduce the subject of mitzvot, the sacred deeds of Jewish observance, by noting that in Judaism Ithe deed is central whereas the theology remains secondary. Perhaps unique among the world’s religions, Judaism stresses expression through a detailed regimen of behavior that shapes every aspect of our waking lives (and even specifies permissible body postures while asleep!). How and what we eat, the frequency and content of prayer, business practice and communal policy, life cycle and special moments in the calendar, criminal and tort law – all these and more are defined, debated and implemented as the very paradigm of Jewish spirituality. Vast rabbinic tractates seek precision when it comes to the path (halakhah) of mandated and prohibited behavior, yet leave the tellings (aggadah) of our thoughts, stories and values raucous and diverse. Many scholars have introduced Jewish observance in exactly that way – commandments are primary and important, thoughts are secondary, hence mythical and unconstrained. But our complicating challenge is that many mitzvot do pertain precisely to the realm of thought – proper belief, the very concept of idolatry, morality and ethical ideals.

  • PARSHAT NASO JUNE 4, 2011 RABBI VERNON KURTZ Each Year
PARSHAT NASO JUNE 4, 2011 RABBI VERNON KURTZ Each year I choose a Talmudic tractate to study. Each morning, right after Minyan, I retire to my office and spend some time studying the ancient folios of the Talmud. Not only is this part of my continuing study of Jewish tradition, but it also serves a secondary purpose. I try to end my study of a particular tractate just before the holiday of Pesach so that on the eve of Pesach I, along with my fellow firstborn colleagues, can celebrate a Siyyum, the completion of a Talmudic tractate, and therefore not have to observe the fast of the firstborn. The Talmud tractate that I have chosen for this year is the tractate of Nazir. It is quite difficult because it deals mostly with the laws of the Nazirite and its accompanying regulations. As I proceed from Mishna to Mishna and folio to folio one can see that the Rabbis have mixed feelings about the Nazirite. The law itself is found in our Torah portion this Shabbat. The Torah tells us that if one assumed the vow of becoming a Nazir he had certain responsibilities that were now incumbent upon him. It was an ascetic vow during which time the Nazirite would abstain from wine, from cutting his hair, would observe extra degrees of sexual purity and would not come into contact with a dead body. The Torah seems to look upon this vow with a sense of approval, but not an enthusiasm. As Rabbi Harold Kushner, in his commentary in the Etz Hayim Humash writes: “Opinions are strongly divided concerning the Nazirite.
