A Message from the President of NAASE Gilbert Kleiner, FSA 1 As I looked at the titles of the articles in this issue of NAASE Journal, I was impressed. Our authors have given us compelling reading. When professionals develop skills and insights and pass them on to others in the field, their generosity in sharing their professional experiences places them among the leadership elite. Their research and their opinions are valuable tools for their colleagues in the field of synagogue administration. By sharing with us, they elevate their standing in our Association and in-turn, they make each of us that much better at performing our responsibilities for our congregations. The NAASE Journal is our opportunity as professionals in synagogue management to learn and grow in this collegial yet learned forum. A scholarly professional Journal is a garden where valuable sharing thrives and the seedlings of ideas grown from practical experience and wisdom take root. Take this opportunity. Read these articles, and learn from your fellow professionals. Yasher Koach. n GIlbert Kleiner, FSA NAASE President February, 2010 Adar 5770 ABOUT THE COVER Our cover is an illustration of randomly placed human like figures connected by seemingly random vector lines. Some of the figures are in close proximity to each other, and some are farther off. Some have several lines of connection and some have less. This illustration, somewhat abstract but quite symbolic, in many ways reflects the web of relationships and people that is the modern synagogue community. It was chosen because it graphically represents that which concerns many of the articles in this issue of NAASE Journal – how can Jews connect to each other, to Torah, to their synagogue and to the community as a whole. And of course – we know the Executive Director has a role to play in either creating those connections, or at least fostering the opportunity for connections to happen. Although the private life of the individual is important, the importance of community in Judaism cannot be overemphasized. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 17b) states that scholars should only reside in towns that had a structured, organized community. It defines the essential elements required - of course one of them being a synagogue. We are familiar with the cautionary statement in Pirkei Avot 2:5 – “Al tifrosh min hatzibbur” – do not withdraw from, or separate from, the community. And no one can be so ego-centric or sure of his or herself that he / she can be the center of that community – “v’al ta-amin b’azmecha”- and do not be so sure of yourself. Hence, no one figure in the cover illustration is taller or bigger than another. Every day in our worship there is the statement attributed to Hillel, from Pirkei Avot 1:12 – to be like a disciple of Aaron – loving peace and pursuing peace, loving our fellows and bringing them near to Torah. We recite the passage from the Talmud which lists the deeds that bring reward, among them creating peace (i.e. – friendships) between people. Although study and prayer can be done by individuals in private, it takes on a higher dimension of holiness when we connect with each other and pray or study in community. Talmud Brachot tells us that knowledge of Torah cannot be thoroughly acquired unless studied in a group. And of course, certain prayers and ritual privileges are reserved for the minyan. In fact, most of our prayers are written in the plural. Since each Jew is inexorably tied to every other Jew (“kol Yisrael averim ze la-ze”) we cannot escape the community even if we wanted to. Inevitably there will be those who try to distance themselves, but we must always be prepared to welcome someone back. The prophet Isaiah expresses this well – “Shalom shalom lerachok velekarov”. (Welcome welcome to those who are near and those who are far - Isaiah 57:19). Recognizing, of course, that distance may not just be because someone traveled a long way to enter our synagogue… there can be a spiritual or an emotional distance as well. n B’reishit: The

For the most part, it ignores the doctrines, faith, and practices of Orthodox Jews, and barely touches upon synagogue hie, which is the most meaningful expression of American Orthodoxy. It is hoped that the reader will find here some appreciation of the vitality of American Orthodoxy. Earlier predictions of the demise of 11 am indebted to many people who assisted me in making this essay possible. More than 40, active in a variety of Orthodox organizations, gave freely of their time for extended discussions and interviews and many lay leaders and rabbis throughout the United States responded to a mail questionnaire. A number of people read a draft of this paper. I would be remiss if I did not mention a few by name, at the same time exonerating them of any responsibility for errors of fact or for my own judgments and interpretations. So how can we get rid of it? One good way would be to get rid of the 9 days altogether. Chazal tell us that “in any generation that the Holy Temple is not rebuilt, it’s as if that generation destroyed it”. If we had been to the Holy Temple, experienced the holiness of it and then seen it destroyed, we’d definitely cry a lot. It seems like it was just a building. But it’s not just a building, or even a holy building, it’s the embodiment of our souls. The pain and suffering that we’re going through, and even the pain of the whole world is directly related to the lack of Hashem’s presence in the world, because our Holy Temple is gone. So what can we do? Well, literally the third halacha in our Shulchan Aruch says as follows: “It’s fitting for anyone with awe of Heaven to feel pain and distress over the destruction of the Holy Temple” (Orach Chaim 1:3) The Mishna Brurah there spells out how to practice this “pain and distress”. One should try and get up at Chatzos (midnight) to say the Tikkun Chatzos (The Midnight Repair), which is a special prayer service recited nightly throughout the year to express our grief and concern over the destruction of the Holy Temple, the Jewish exile and our yearning for redemption.

Annie Brings Crowds To Har Shalom The last weekend of January saw near-capacity crowds filling the Burke Sanctuary for the Har Shalom Players’ (HSP) two performances of the musical, Annie. Recognized by co-producers Stew Remer and Ken Lechter as one of the top-attended shows in HSP’s 14 years of productions, Annie brought together actors from the congregation and other local community theater groups, production and tech crews, and talented musicians. It indeed took a special community to pull off a live production such as this one. With a combined 78 individuals among the production team, crew, orchestra, and actors (including children from eleven area schools), Annie shared a message of hope and optimism with Har Shalom congregants and theater-goers in the surrounding area.

    Rabbi Jay TelRav Yom Kippur Sermon 5780 A Very Narrow Bridge Earlier this year, my wife and I took our very first vacation without our children. Our son is coming up on his 9th birthday which gives you an idea how much we were looking forward to this. We planned the trip months ahead and decided on Barcelona. A city full of the things we craved like architecture and museums. We visited the masterpieces of the architect, Antoni Gaudi, and we went to the Picasso museum. We ate leisurely at a late hour and woke up calmly to sit in a cafe reading while drinking our espressos. It was the perfect escape from children! While we were taking our time in the Picasso museum, Julie decided to try to help me understand the work of the artist. We spent time on a series of works based on a masterpiece by Diego Velasquez called “Las Meninas”.1 While the original was classical renaissance style – very realistic, Picasso developed the characters and the setting using his own modernist style. He created hundreds of studies and developed each individual subject over and over again until he captured just what he was searching for. Each person in the original was still in the same location and the composition was the same but, beyond that, it was almost unrecognizable as a recreation of Las Meninas. Then, while we were talking about it, Julie said something that stuck with me. She said “Picasso is painting what he sees. He is not lying.” What an interesting way to think about the work of an artist.

However, because most elite schools were initially directed towards training for the Christian ministry, nearly all American colonial universities were off limits to Jews. So badly did Jews ache for the opportunity to get themselves into academia, that some actually converted to Christianity to gain acceptance.1 This began to change toward the end of the colonial period, when Benjamin Franklin introduced non-theological subjects to the university. In 1770, Brown University officially opened its doors to Jews, finally granting equal access to a higher education for American Jews.2 By the early 1920's Jewish representation at the leading American universities had grown remarkably. For example, Jews made up 22% of the incoming class at Harvard in 1922, while in 1909 they had been only 6%.3 This came at a time when there were only 3.5 millions Jews4 in a United States of 106.5 million people.5 This made the United States only about 3% Jewish, rendering Jews greatly over-represented in universities all over the country. However, in due course the momentum reversed. During the “Roaring 1920’s,” a trend towards quotas limiting Jewish students became prevalent.
