Scire Est Servire

The motto of this school, freely translated, means "knowledge implies responsibility." In other words the person who has the knowledge or ability to see through a problem also has a responsibility to do something about it. But how should one go about doing something about a problem? All too often a persuasive demagogue can lead an unthinking mod into taking violent or illegal action. But Might does not constitute R i9ht, even if it is used in an attempt to improve conditions. A so-called enlightened society should have well·educated citizens who are capable of dealing with problems through engaging first in research and dialogue and then in democratic procedures. It is my opinion, therefore, that the one goal of our educational system should be to turn out graduates who are capable of seeing all sides of a problem and of being unselfish enough to support a solution which will be most beneficial to the majority. Only then will our educational system have produced a responsible citizen. MR. BARTLETT, VICE-PRIINCIPAL

8 Graduates j President's Message

When we graduate this year, we will be leaving Herman Collegiate with a feeling of academic accomplishment. and in most cases, a feeling that the past five years have been the most enjoyable and rewarding of our lives. But now, whether we are going to further our education, or enter the world of errployment, we must be ready to accept more responsibility than we have in previous years. Suddenly, there won't be teachers making sure that we complete our assignments and behave in class. Our success will depend entirely on our own ability to accept responsibilities, and we must acquire this ability, or risk failure. I would like to thank everyone for their co-operation this year, and for helping to make this past year the most gratify. ing of my school career. Woody McKaig

Vice-President's Message

In the days of our youth, what we do in school, con stitutes our present lives. It is true that the training we get here is carried over into the rest of our lives and forms habits, good or bad. Our job is school and we have to work at it. Our teachers may be our unconscious guides towards some objec tive we hope to reach. Nevertheless, we ourselves need guidance to help realize our visions. School is one of the best places to get that guid· ance from considerate teachers who may believe in our dreams. They too have had the same ideas. Our goa l may change as the years go on, but having worked towards it will give us happiness and the satisfaction of accomplishment. 70 Another better idea from Ford.

Better ideas count only if you are first. The selectivity tower pictured at Ford of Canada's new St. Thomas passenger car assembly, plant is an example. It adds a new profile to the skyline of the Canadian automotive industry. Twelve storeys high, it stacks car bodies for immediate use when required on the final assembly line. It is a better idea-the kind that helps ensure better products.
