  • Heisman Trivia
Heisman Trivia HEISMAN.COM @HEISMANTROPHY 318 Did you know...? Some Facts about the Heisman Trophy • Designed by sculptor Frank Eliscu in 1934, the Heisman Trivia Trophy is modeled after Ed Smith, Eliscu’s former high school classmate and star running back for the now defunct New York University football team. • Regarding the Heisman Memorial Trophy, Frank Eliscu said, "It is not my best work but it turned out to be something like the Statue of Liberty. I always thought it was wonderful that I'll be able to leave something like this behind." Eliscu continued working until he passed away from a heart attack in 1996. • The trophy is made of cast bronze, stands 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) tall and weighs 25 pounds (11.3 kg). • The first Heisman Trophy was awarded to Chicago’s Jay Berwanger in 1935. Initially, it was known then as the Down- town Athletic Club Award. After John Heisman, the legend- ary college coach and DAC athletics director, succumbed to pneumonia in 1936, the award was renamed in his honor. • Initially, the Downtown Athletic Club Award was given to, "the best college football player, east of the Mississippi." Once the award was renamed the Heisman Trophy, the geographical limitations were removed and players of all col- leges, from coast to coast, were eligible to win the award. • In 1935 Jay Berwanger did not have any room in his home for the trophy and gave it to his Aunt. Berwanger’s aunt was not familiar with college football and did not realize that the trophy meant her nephew was the best player in college football, so she used it as an extravagant doorstop.

  • THE HISTORY of SMU FOOTBALL 1910S on the Morning of Sept
OUTLOOK PLAYERS COACHES OPPONENTS REVIEW RECORDS HISTORY MEDIA THE HISTORY OF SMU FOOTBALL 1910s On the morning of Sept. 14, 1915, coach Ray Morrison held his first practice, thus marking the birth of the SMU football program. Morrison came to the school in June of 1915 when he became the coach of the University’s football, basketball, baseball and track teams, as well as an instructor of mathematics. A former All-Southern quarterback at Vanderbilt, Morrison immediately installed the passing game at SMU. A local sportswriter nicknamed the team “the Parsons” because the squad was composed primarily of theology students. SMU was a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which ruled that neither graduate nor transfer students were eligible to play. Therefore, the first SMU team consisted entirely of freshmen. The Mustangs played their first game Oct. 10, 1915, dropping a 43-0 decision to TCU in Fort Worth. SMU bounced back in its next game, its first at home, to defeat Hendrix College, 13-2. Morrison came to be known as “the father of the forward pass” because of his use of the passing game on first and second downs instead of as a last resort. • During the 1915 season, the Mustangs posted a record of 2-5 and scored just three touchdowns while giving up 131 Ownby Stadium was built in 1926 points. SMU recorded the first shutout in school history with a 7-0 victory over Dallas University that year. • SMU finished the 1916 season 0-8-2 and suffered its worst 1920s 1930s loss ever, a 146-3 drubbing by Rice.

THE POUNDERS ABOUND! With quarterbacks firing laser-like passes to a bevy of aesthetically gifted wide receivers, it’s no surprise that the NFL’s aerial attack has captured the attention of fans from coast to coast. But though the game in the air may be at a fever pitch of excitement, the league’s talented corps of running backs has more than made its presence felt in the modern-day NFL. And according to some, their contributions have never been more important. “I’ll never back off the belief that the running game is crucial to success,” says ESPN’s MERRIL HOGE, who spent 1987-94 as a running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears. “The running game and running backs are crucial. Being able to run the football and to stop the run are the foundations of the game.” Consider the 2003 season, which was a resounding success for the guys who unmercifully pounded the ball and helped their teams win the old-fashioned way – on the ground. Last year, there were 151 100-yard individual rushing games, the most all-time. There were six 1,500-yard rushers and four 1,600-yard rushers – the most ever in a single season. And for only the second time in history (1998), two players – Baltimore’s JAMAL LEWIS and Green Bay’s AHMAN GREEN – rushed for 1,800 yards. Plus, five players went over 2,000 scrimmage yards, the most ever. “I felt that at the end of last year we may have been watching the best group of NFL running backs to ever play the game at one time,” Hoge says.

  • John Madden Said Something Pretty Funny a Couple of Weeks Ago, and I Laughed
THE COFFIN CORNER, Vol. 19, No. 6 (1997) THE GREATEST EVER! By Bob Carroll John Madden said something pretty funny a couple of weeks ago, and I laughed. But then I realized he was serious. What he said was that Barry Sanders was “the greatest runner of all time.” Maybe he said “greatest ever.” I was yukking too much to get every nuance. But I’m sure he added an est on to great. Well, as anyone over the age of 40 (except John Madden) knows, there’s been at least one -- and arguably, several -- greater than Sanders. Not that Barry isn’t one of the best. I don’t think anyone will complain if he goes into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the first year he’s eligible. But the greatest? Get real! Even this season, when Sanders is having a career year, some coaches might prefer having Terrell Davis or Jerome Bettis in their backfield. A couple of years ago, I’m sure a lot of them would have preferred Emmitt Smith. Neither Davis, Bettis, nor Smith can dodge or weave with Sanders, and I think he might win a straightaway dash too. But what they can do better than the Lion star is keep drives going. They are big and burly, and when they cradle a football in their well-muscled arms you can be reasonably certain they will gain some yards -- on average, nearly five. Sanders may go seven to a dozen downs mixing three-yard gains with three-yard losses. That means that three or four Lions’ drives could go three-and-out.
