Introduction The existence of a positive (self) image of a people is very important in the successful struggle for self-determination. An image can be constructed through various methods. This paper deals with the way in which an incorrect image of the Rehoboth Basters was constructed via the literature. Subjects that are considered interesting or popular, usually have a great number of different publications and authors. A large quantity of publications almost inevitably means that there is more information available on that specific topic. A large number of publications usually also indicates a great amount of authors who bring in many different views and interpretations. -

The Race Chase: the Colour of Cricket Transformation in South Africa
The Race Chase: The Colour of Cricket Transformation in South Africa Ashwin Desai Department of Sociology, University of Johannesburg [email protected] Biographical Details Ashwin Desai is Professor of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg. His latest book is entitled ‘Reverse Sweep: A Story of South African Cricket since Apartheid’. The Race Chase: The Colour of Cricket Transformation in South Africa Abstract South African cricket (re)entered international cricket in 1991, a few years before the country’s first democratic elections. A tour of India was a prelude to playing in the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. From the outset of “unity”, cricket was lauded for its transformation programme and for making a decisive break with the past. This break was epitomised by the team being called the Proteas rather than the Springboks. Despite this and on-going efforts to transform the team into a more representative one, issues of racism and racial representation have continued to haunt the game. Questions are persistently raised about racial targets and interference in selection from on high. At local level, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has now made it mandatory that franchises and semi-professional teams be obliged to include six players of colour, of whom three must be Black Africans, raising concerns about deliberate racial engineering. These apprehensions have been exacerbated by increasing calls for national teams to reflect the racial demographics of the country. This article looks at issues of race and representivity in South African cricket post- unity, seeking to probe allegations of racism, as well as how CSA has approached issues of racial representation in the form of quotas and the possible effects of this on the game. -

THE INNER RING MAY 2020 | SECOND INNINGS Dear Dolphins family Hope lockdown is treating you all well. Powerplay I have set myself various goals for the lockdown period, of which one of them was to read more. I have always enjoyed reading about the journeys of successful people and their habits, sacrifices and lessons learned along those journeys. One such fascinating journey is that of Robert Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company from 2005 to February 2020. “The ride of a lifetime” is a fascinating reflection on his innovative way of thinking and relentless journey towards excellence. “I talk a lot about “the relentless pursuit of perfection”. In practice this can mean a lot of things, and it is hard to define. It is a mindset, more than a specific set of rules. It is not about perfectionism at all costs. It is about creating an environment in which people refuse to accept mediocrity. It is about pushing back against the urge to say that “good enough” is good enough.” – Robert Iger Thank you all for the positive feedback received last week. It was good to at least have a quick e-catchup and confirmation that you are still going strong. I value your input and therefore urge you to please continue sending your feedback, ideas and thoughts. THE INNER RING Feedback from last week’s “inswinger” – Who is your favourite Dolphins player of all time? The names of Jonty Rhodes, Lance Klusener, Hashim Amla, Shaun Pollock, Malcolm Marshall, Barry Richards, Mike Procter, and the current Proteas, Keshav, David and Andile came up quite frequently. -

KZN Cricket the Inner Ring June 2020 Second Innings2
THE INNER RING JUNE 2020 | SECOND INNINGS Dear Dolphins family Hope you are all still hanging in there and fighting the good fight. Powerplay As sport slowly returns to our lives, I hope that we all take a moment to reflect on the role that sport has played in all of our lives, and that we will appreciate every opportunity granted to engage in sporting activities. Not only does it promote a healthy lifestyle, but it also brings people together. It has played a significant role in the South African economy and has played a huge part in earning the respect of countries around the world, especially those countries that have had the unfortunate experience of being on the wrong side of a perfect South African display, whichever sporting code it may be. Some of the greatest moments in history have been created through sport, and through those gifted individuals and teams who have the magical ability to create something out of nothing, to achieve what was previously perceived to be impossible and to put lasting smiles on those that had the privilege of witnessing those moments. I once witnessed an interview where one of the proud golfers produced in Africa, Nick Price, after winning a tournament said: “It felt like I managed to capture lightning in a bottle” THE INNER RING That phrase captured my attention because it means to accomplish a nearly impossible task, to trap something elusive or fleeting. It is probably the perfect summary of every sportsman or woman’s dream. To achieve the impossible, to raise the bar and to achieve perfection, even if it is just for a small, fleeting moment.
