For the first time ever, Parliament approved a rail budget in line with the National Transport Plan. Steinar Killi, Director General Photo: Sindre Ånonsen With one billion kroner extra for capital expenditure in 2007 and a Government that is promising to maintain funding at this level, Jernbaneverket has been given the start- ing point we need to fulfil our side of the deal: delivering a competitive railway that pays dividends for society in the form of greater mobility and a better environment. We are already making good progress. In the Oslo area, construction of the new station at Lysaker continues, and in the Sandnes/Stavanger area a new freight terminal and double-track line are taking shape. These are all key projects in the process of strengthening rail’s competitive position at regional and national level. -

A great deal of expenditure, time and effort has been devoted to improving the safety of railway infrastructure and train operations.The series of accidents in 2000 dealt a blow to the safe reputation of our railways. Public confidence is essential to our reputation. We know that confidence takes years to build up, but only seconds to demolish. We are in the process of rebuilding public con- fidence, step by step, and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Jernbaneverket completed the project for a new Sandvika–Asker line within the budget of NOK 3.7 billion. Steinar Killi, Director General Norway and Jernbaneverket led Europe in installing the GSM-R rail communications system. What was more, punctuality in 2005 broke the record set the previous year, proving that the 2004 figures were no fluke but the product of determined efforts by Jernbaneverket and the train operating companies. The result has been continued growth in freight and passenger traffic. Meanwhile, Jernbaneverket can look back on a year of demanding changes on both the operational and the administrative side. I am therefore pleased to report that the restructuring processes were carried out without affecting the product we delivered to our train operating customers and the travelling public.
