SPRING + SUMMER 2019 Active Living Guide Online registration has never been easier! victoria.ca/recreation Welcome to Your Active Living Guide, Every year the City of Victoria staff team and partner organizations undertake an assessment of community needs, industry trends, and unique opportunities to present the diverse arrangement of recreational programs and services reected in this guide. In addition, we are also involved in a number of initiatives aimed at enhancing experiences throughout the City’s inventory of parks and recreation amenities. Our team is honoured to play this role in the health of residents and quality of life in Victoria. From engaging with residents and developing programs that help people get active, to managing quality parks and facilities, we are committed to a high standard of service. One important area of attention in recent years is the physical accessibility of the City’s public spaces. Through partnerships with organizations like Recreation Integration Victoria, Island Health, the Rick Hansen Foundation, and the City’s Accessibility Working Group, as well as dialogue with residents, we are gathering valuable information that is helping to identify barriers and improve access. This focus comes from the recognition that 1 in 5 Victoria residents live with a disability that affects their enjoyment of indoor and outdoor spaces. While there is much work to be done, we are encouraged by the community participation in recent improvements. Over the past year this progress has included, designs for a new barrier-free recreation facility to replace Crystal Pool, new accessible play features and a pathway linking Cecelia Ravine Park to the Galloping-Goose Trail, a long-term conceptual plan for accessible amenities in Topaz Park, and new pathways in Beacon Hill Park. In the coming years residents can expect to see further improvements to both program offerings and physical spaces, as we strive to make City parks and facilities welcoming spaces for all. As always, your feedback is appreciated. Please send your comments, suggestions or questions to our team via email at [email protected]. Wishing you a healthy year.
