Million Dollar Quartet” by Colin Escott & Floyd Mutrux at the Hippodrome Theatre Through December 2
“Million Dollar Quartet” By Colin Escott & Floyd Mutrux At the Hippodrome Theatre through December 2 By James Cooper MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS … PRODUCTION Flashing lights, shimmering jackets and long musical solos radiate through the production of “Million Dollar Quartet,” now at the Hippodrome Theatre. Though the special effects and costumes are beneficial in some instances, the show lacks emphasis in the one area it should stress the most: the music. The whole story focuses on the decisions of four major musicians from the 1950s: Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. Music is the main concept within the script, but it certainly isn’t the main concept within the performance. The show focuses on a single event: the night that all four musicians of the “Million Dollar Quartet” were present in the same space at the same time, the Sun Records Studio in Memphis on December 4, 1956. Elvis (Cody Slaughter) used to be a member of the Sun Records family but then he switched to RCA, a bigger label. Since this change, Elvis has lost contact with his former producer, Sam Phillips (Vince Nappo). As Elvis returns with his girlfriend Dyanne (Kelly Lamont) he makes it clear to Sam that he wishes he had stayed at Sun. Sam too wishes that Elvis had stayed, but his main focus is now on producing Johnny (David Elkins) and the up-and-coming Jerry Lee (Martin Kaye). All the while Carl (Robert Britton Lyons) has to decide whether or not he wants to leave Sun Records or move on to Columbia. -

FROM ME: WE REALLY APPRECIATE THE EMAILS WE RECEIVE FROM FANS. LET US KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY INTERESTING NEWS. THANKS, ADAM 3/14/07 Hi Adam, I finally had the chance to read "Elvis & Me by Priscilla and thought I'd share a little info with you. As I read the book, I really find it hard to believe that Priscilla would put some of the information she has in the book if Elvis was alive. There is quite a bit of their intimacy moments in the book and knowing what I've read about the two of them, it's hard to believe Priscilla even sharing this information. All I know is that I have very mixed feelings about the whole Elvis thing. Is it a money gimmick and/or just to keep Elvis and themselves in the limelight light. I do know that people are out to make a buck off of him. Some of those addresses on People Search are phony and they shouldn't be allowed to rip people off by using his middle initial and date of birth. -

PURSUING LEGAL ACTION AGAINST RCA GERMANY Suit Alleges German Copyright Law Provides for Continuing Record Royalties for Elvis Presley for music sold in Germany MEMPHIS, TN – August 30, 2011 – Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. and the Calunius Litigation Risk Fund announced today developments in a multi-million Euro lawsuit against Arista Music, formerly RCA Records, in Germany. The suit, which was filed in the name of its sister company Elvis Presley Enterprises, LLC in December 2010, is demanding proper payment for sound recordings in Germany featuring Elvis Presley including new media, like downloads, ringtones and entertainment apps that Presley himself could not have dreamed would someday exist. The suit is only applicable to sound recordings in Germany and is limited to amounts earned since March 2002 and future revenue until 2023 following an amendment to German copyright law that extended the term of copyright protection. The suit alleges that Presley was unjustly exploited during his lifetime by an unprincipled record company and that his estate has continued to suffer from those injustices. The central issue, as it relates to this German suit, is the 1973 buyout agreement, which terminated all previous agreements between Presley and RCA. On February 28, 1973, under the agreement, which was first initiated by RCA and arranged by Presley’s manager, “Colonel” Tom Parker, rights to Presley’s entire back catalogue of more than 1,000 recordings were purchased by RCA for just $5.4 million. -

NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Join the Greatest Rock and Roll Jam Session in History Million Dollar Quartet Coming for Encore Run at The Phoenix Theatre Company (Oct. 29, 2019 – PHOENIX) When the paths of four rock and roll legends – Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis – cross, history and magic is made! Tony Award winning musical Million Dollar Quartet returns to The Phoenix Theatre Company to give audiences a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the most legendary music experiences ever when Presley, Cash, Perkins and Lewis cut an impromptu record together at Sun Records Studios in Memphis, Tenn., in December 1956. The show runs Dec. 18, 2019 through Feb. 16, 2020. “Million Dollar Quartet is really a tribute to these remarkable performers,” said Scott Weinstein, director. “I want audiences to feel the surprise and excitement Presley, Cash, Perkins and Lewis felt that extraordinary day. They were discovering something unexpected right in the studio, and through this show, we get to discover the magic with them. When you get four big personalities in one room, they’re going to butt heads. But that’s exactly what makes this a great show – the drama is real and authentic, and you get to see that energy channeled into an incomparable record.” The spontaneous jam session is one of the great and nearly forgotten stories in rock history, but it changed the music scene forever. These artists were the biggest names of the day, at the top of their game, and they just happened to be in the same studio at the same time. -
Otis Blackwell: Songwriter to “The King”
Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum • Words & Music • Grades 7-12 Otis Blackwell: Songwriter to “The King” As the songwriter of two of Elvis Presley’s career-making hits, Otis Blackwell will always be linked to the man known as the King of Rock & Roll. But many other artists gave voice to Blackwell’s work, leaving behind a legacy that reaches far beyond Presley’s shadow. Indeed, Blackwell is considered one of rock & roll’s most influential songwriters. According to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, “Blackwell is without question one of the select songwriters whose songs literally helped redefine America’s popular music in the early and mid-1950s.” Born February 16, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, Blackwell grew up next to a movie theater and developed a passion for Hollywood’s singing cowboys and their western music. “Like the blues, it told a story,” he once said. “But it didn’t have the same restrictive construction. A cowboy song could do anything.” Blackwell began writing songs in his teens, but turned his attention to performing after winning a local talent show. He soon tired of the road, choosing instead to focus on songwriting while working a day job pressing clothes at a New York tailor shop. Blackwell’s demo tape of “Don’t Be Cruel” caught the ear of Presley, who had just signed with RCA Records in November 1955 and was looking to Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, insisted that Blackwell share expand his southern regional popularity to national stardom. Taking cues writing credit with Presley to increase the artist’s profit—a common from Blackwell’s distinctive vocal phrasing, Presley turned the song into a practice at the time among stars. -
